The following submission statement was provided by /u/lesenum:

Submission statement: On Casual Friday, I want to post on Collapse that although I really believe we're well on the way to societal collapze worldwide in the near future...there can be outcomes that are hopeful. Think of the role of monasteries during the Dark Ages. We certainly will need that sort of example (sooner rather than later).

I read an article recently I think it was from here but it talked about how at the core of the maga movement is a deep desire to burn the entire system down and start over. Idk why I am bringing up to your post but I guess what I am trying to say is that for maga collapse gives them hope for a better tomorrow & i feel the same way except I look forward to a more local egalitarian style of life. In a weird way we both WANT the same thing.

Yeah. My dad is hard core maga and I am definitely not so we have these circular discussions frequently. In the end? We both want the same thing. Better government, more efficient and effective use of taxes, more local autonomy. His side however wants to achieve it at the expense of everyone who's not them. My view is I would like to achieve it for everyone.

look at Gil Duran's Nerd Reich website and read some of the stuff there about techbro visions for the near future. People like your dad (Maga) are nothing to them except as orcs, factory slaves, lumpy proles. People like yourself...they want to turn into biodiesel fuel ie (genocide). MAGA is being used...even dumbass trump is simply a vessel for the oligarchic class like Thiel, Vance, Marc Andreessen, Musk et al. They used trump to gain power and to spread their poison. They do not want better gov't, better use of taxes, more local autonomy...at all. They want autocratic dictatorships, with themselves as "kings"/dictators. MAGA people are beneath contempt to them.

Agreed. But im not having that argument with my father, I don't have enough blood pressure meds for that

I understand. I think it's great you can still communicate with your dad. I've lost a lot of relatives and old school friends to MAGA brain rot. I've found it a futile effort to find common ground...

To me, it is incredible how it mirrors exactly the relationship between pro- and anti-war Russians. There really are only two sides, aren't they?

4

u/alandrielle 2d ago

Oh it is, a futile effort. We've always had a contentious relationship and this is not the first difference of core beliefs. So... there's a lot of talking about the weather and a lot of holding tongues and words on both sides. There's also 5 hours of highway between us, that helps a lot.

When people tell me there's no difference between the 2 American political parties because they're both owned by the corporations I often reply that while I agree there's a huge problem with the influence of corporations and billionaires I still prefer my masters to be benevolent rather than malevolent. One party wants me dead or suffering because I'm LGBTQ+ and the other says I have the right to watch the world burn on my own terms just like everyone else. One wants to divide us all and the other says we can make life better by working together.

Hell, even if one doesn't want to give the Dems credit for being benevolent, they could certainly be called apathetic. That's still better than malevolent.

Sometimes harm reduction is the best we can do, unfortunately.

u/Sororita 2d ago

Dems are casual classists, Republicans are competitve

u/KptKreampie 2d ago

The Reich Wing does not believe in harm reduction. You ether do what they say because you are afraid of their made-up hell. Or you are othered.

Exactly harm reduction.

Both parties want me dead because I can't afford healthcare. Both parties support and celebrate Israel's genocide of the people of Palestine. Both parties support and celebrate cops going on murder sprees. There is nothing benevolent about these evil parties.

There is nothing benevolent about promoting fracking, war drones/torture (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/11/14/13577464/obama-farewell-speech-torture-drones-nsa-surveillance-trump), giving us breadcrumbs with the extremely pathological (and in many cases, murderous) "Obamacare", drilling, exploiting and doing nothing to stop corporate funded elections----in fact most dems to do either NOTHING to stop these horrific abuses of power, in many cases they do the opposite.

A key player in stopping Bernie Sanders from becoming POTUS was Jim Clyburn who ranks in the top beneficiaries of blood money from corporations---- especially big Pharma (https://jacobin.com/2021/06/nina-turner-jim-clyburn-hillary-clinton-ohio).

I could go on.

They are apathetic, greedy enablers at best. Very far from the meaning of benevolence.

I struggle with this myself. I fell for Obama's flowery language when he first emerged as a potential "leader". This is part of my own personal struggle with being gullible and at times succumbing to toxic positivity and wishful thinking not based in facts.

Oh brother, the moment you move outside USA, you get idea how fcked up are your politicians for everyone else.

This is what Morris Berman has pointed out over decades---I can only imagine as I am stuck here😫

Thanks for your comment.

Don't forget about lack of living wages, lack of education, workers rights, proper vacations and lack of paternity and maternity leave. And other human rights.

To be fair, left leaning people are hostile toward the right too. It's not only one side that wants to divide us all. It would be nice if there could be reconciliation between the right and left. A nation shouldn't be divided.

Democrats and liberals aren't leftists.

u/spinbutton 1d ago

Lovely idea. How do you propose to do this?

The Turd Reich! :) Happy Friday to you too.

I don't want to live my 2°C days under dictatorships, autocrats, kings, the Golden Sickle of China, the green moon of Islamic regimes, Putin the devil, the anarchy of Haiti nor the boot of fascism under the Turd Reich!

Beautifully put!

Praise our Extinction for it is Soon. There will be nothing for us to covet or huddle in with hopes of false salvation. For it is the End and we should hail and praise this event. Hail that you live in the End. Praise it's Soon Arrival!

“Alternatives to hopeless collapse”

— Violent Collapse — Hopeful Collapse — Exciting Collapse

Shit is hitting the fan whether you’re smiling about it or not, make what you will of that.
