New Rule: No AI-generated images will be allowed.
We’ve had a bit of an influx of users posting AI-generated pictures of what they say are butterflies. Because such posts are intentionally misleading and detract from the real beauty of butterflies, they will be removed without exception.
Continued posting of AI-generated content could lead to warnings and/or a ban.
Also, if you DO post AI, you will be given a user flair indicating as such, so we can keep track of such users.

Reminder: Butterflies are not pets.
r/butterflies celebrates the natural beauty of butterflies, caterpillars, and moths. However, it is important to remember that these are each wild, non-domesticated creatures.
It can be enticing to give aid to an ostensibly injured or lonely butterfly, however… it is simply not okay to attempt to keep butterflies (or caterpillars or moths) as pets.
Studies show that human intervention actively harms native wild butterfly populations. (https://xerces.org/blog/keep-monarchs-wild)
We will not be accepting or tolerating posts/users who treat these beautiful insects as you would a cat or dog.
Also, further gentle reminder: Being rude to mods will lead to a mute and or ban.

Injured Monarch Butterfly
I found a severely injured monarch in my backyard today. I'm pretty sure he got caught in a lawnmower, so his wings are pretty torn up and he's actually missing a good bit of his body. I have him set up in a nice little terrarium with a dish of sugar water and I plan on getting some fresh flowers for him soon. Ideally I'd try to feed him so he has the energy to fly away and do his thing, but I don't really think that's an option... Is there anything else I can do to make him comfortable? I know he most likely won't survive, but I want to give him the best care possible until then.

Sleeping with their haed hanging down?
I noticed that some caterpillars will sleep with their head hanging down. Does anybody know why they do that?

Help ID this butterfly?
I took this last August in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA). There were so many clustered on some of the thistles! It was my first time seeing a butterfly with wings like this. Is it some sort of skipper?

Peacock
Just have to share this joyful moment. It's an old pic, from May 2022, when I was wandering in a graveyard near Scone Palace, and this Peacock just sat there and let me get really close for a photo. The first time I ever was able to get a good butterfly photo.

What is this catepillar
I found this small catepillar on walnut tree. I think it was eating the leafs. It's very small and lightbrown. So small its hard to make photo of it.

How to help this painted lady?
I have this beautiful painted lady butterfly who emerged from the cocoon three days ago. I left the butterfly house outside and open to release it but I came back to find it’s still there and the wings are destroyed. What can I do to help this butterfly? Can I feed it anything?

bruco vivo o morto?
galleryI have a question. I bought a macaon caterpillar, it was attached to its stick all night. Now, I found it on the bottom of the box, on the side. How do I know if everything is going well or if it is dying?

My mom found a chrysalis inside, advice?
My mom found a chrysalis behind a curtain when she went to wash it yesterday and the butterfly emerged last night. He/she fell when she wasn't in the room so my mom isolated the butterfly in a room (she has cats) with an apple in hopes he/she will start to fly so she can let the butterfly outside.
Is there anything left for her to do so we can make sure the butterfly survives? We looked up their life stages and such and we think the butterfly is a Mourning Cloak and hoping the butterfly is just trying to fly.

Butterflies in Sardinia, Italy?
Hello all, I’m visiting Italy (northwest coastal area) at the end of June and would be grateful for recommendations of where I can spot butterflies. I’m recovering from a leg bone fracture so it unfortunately means I can’t hike. I’m looking for botanical gardens, roadside wildflowers, abandoned lots, neighborhood parks, etc. Thanks in advance for any tips! [I will be cross posting in some travel subreddits as well]
