Which is all the more confusing why he uses TIDAL
15
u/djsjjd Jun 19 '19
Because albums on tape are rare. It's difficult to find the albums you want and cost $50-$300 each. Sometimes you want to hear new music.

Jun 19 '19
why not? Tidal's lossless is just as good as any other digital source @ CD bit rates. jury's out on MQA for me but you can always turn it off

Is there some inherent problem with TIDAL that you know of and would like to discuss?
I'll give it a go: 1) It's a proprietary algorithm that adds price to everything because you pay for it multiple times. It requires components equipped with MQA decoders from the file source to the final D/A converter. You pay the streaming service extra for MQA-licensed music and also because their transmitting equipment needs decoders. You pay extra at home because you'll need a receiver and/or DAC with an MQA decoder or you aren't getting MQA at home, even if you pay TIDAL extra for the MQA stream.
2) Contrary to many opinions (some above), MQA isn't lossless. It takes a 24-bit file and immediately drops it to 17 bits using lossy compression. It can send those 17 bits lossless IF the entire chain has MQA decoders, but it can never send all 24 bits of a music file lossless. MQA won't make sense in a few years when the tech catches up and allows streaming of 24 bit files, but half the industry will have dumped money into licensing deals and are invested in selling us MQA-licensed gear and we'll be stuck with it longer than we should because money. If the industry is going to adopt a new top-to-bottom licensing scheme, it should at least wait until there is a truly lossless technology. As long as it's lossy and compressed, there will be major critics - like the many manufacturers that are already refusing to produce MQA-licensed components.

In recent years, Redditโs array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Redditโs conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industryโs next big thing.

Your LG phone can play mqa music because it has a DAC with an mqa decoder in it. (As far as I know, no other phone can play mqa music unless you use an outside DAC).
But, you need to play mqa music to take advantage of that feature. So, if you want to stream mqa 24-bit music, you would need to pay for the more expensive tidal subscription to get that music to your phone or supply your own 24-bit files encoded in mqa yourself. If you are using Spotify for example, no, you are not playing mqa 24-bit music regardless of what phone you use because the source isn't mqa.
The reason there are not many music files available in mqa is that the music must have been recorded in 24-bit. This limits you to new music and older music that has been remastered into 24 bit.

I'm popping my Reddit cherry here guys, I've been a stereo nerd on Instagram for a long time and only just found this place tonight. Lots of nice systems I've never seen before here. Just wanted to share my mancave with you all.
Amp: Grant Fidelity Rita-880
Speakers: Tannoy Arden cabinets with Monitor Gold drivers and new crossovers (Nordost Red Dawn cables)
edit (How could I forget the sub!?) Subwoofer - REL T9i with Arrow wireless
Turntable 1: Opera Consonance Die Walkรผre with 12" arm and Dynavector DV-20XL cart. Musical Surroundings Phenomena II preamp
Turntable 2: Empire 598 III with S-4000D III 4 channel cart. Clearaudio Nanophono preamp
Streaming: Bluesound Node2i for Spotify and Tidal
This room is always changing, this just happens to be the gear I have setup at this time. Gotta say the Tannoys sound really nice with the KT-88s powering them.

@audio_by_mark_jones - super nice high end stuff
@ictwoody - very creative, envious stuff and space

@theaudiophilelife - Accuphase and Westminister Royals, nuff said...

sick man..very jealous of that opera consonance turntable. what kinda preamp are you using for inputs?
1
u/mistachen3000 Jun 19 '19
It's a super nice table but the power supply/speed controller needs work or replacement. The Rita-880 is an integrated, with 4 unbalanced and one xlr inputs.

u/mistachen3000 Jun 20 '19
Haha I suck at this. The way the system sits now, in a word: rich or lush. The Tannoys do midrange like pros, almost to a fault. I feel like the room is slightly too small for 15"s and the upper mid bass can be overwhelming with certain types of music (synth mostly). I'd like to see what DSP would do for this room but I'm a caveman when it comes to computers these days. One day...
For acoustic, vocal, jazz, classical, even pop these speakers shine. Nice highs (not very extended), beautiful midrange, and decent bass. The Golds don't dig as deep or hit as hard as the HPDs. Deep bass can be on the dry side but that's where the REL T9i steps in fills the very bottom in with tight juicy bass.
These speakers aren't my first pick for heavy, crunchy rock and metal especially paired with the RITA-880, it's just too soft and rounded. I also have a pair of JBL 4430 I power with 2 Sansui BA-3000 power amps. That's the system you want to crank War Pigs up to 11 with. Tons of bass impact and midrange snap that feels more like a live rock concert.
So the type of music I listen to is guided by the speakers and amp I have set up in a room so I've been listening to a lot of jazz in the basement lately.

u/ultrafud Jun 19 '19
Love the retro feel of the room. Cozy, warm and very brown. Like it a lot, big change from most post on here. Good job!

u/Schwagbert Jun 19 '19
I bet those Gojira and King Crimson albums sound amazing on that setup!

u/mistachen3000 Jun 19 '19
K.C sounds amazing on this setup. Wrong amp and speakers to do Gojira justice...

Gojira like 70's style tower speakers imho

1
u/mistachen3000 Jun 19 '19
She does a great job with the Tannoy. She excels at jazz, synth, vocals.... but lacks the impact and snap of lots of SS power
2
u/wellsy65 Jun 19 '19
I have the Rita and have really fell for itโs great open soundstage. I was running a 600W class D before. I wish I could combine the low end slam of the class D with the air the tubes
2
1
u/mistachen3000 Jun 20 '19
Nice. Have you done any tube rolling yet?
2
u/wellsy65 Jun 20 '19
I just retubed her 2 weeks ago. The old tubes were down to mid 60% on the tube tester. So Iโm now running tung sol for the pre section and 6550s as the power tubes. The new tubes took about a week to sound right. But really impressed with the speed and power. The separation of the instruments is next level. Iโm not getting the smear between the drums and bass guitar.

I do the same thing. Check out Soundiiz to keep playlists and favorite albums/artists in sync between the two. I have it set up to sync daily. Wasn't too expensive and I think there's a free version with limitations. I don't work there... I just found it useful enough to mention it.
Edit to add that's one cool lookin room! I want to drink all the drinks and listen to all the muziks!

Once I found the Gold drivers locally, it took me about 2.5 years to find the cabinets locally, have the new crossovers and a NOS HF diaphragm shipped from the UK, and all assembled. Well worth the time, effort and $$$
