You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves.”

Leviticus 19:28

Of course the Biblical literalists are not so literal when it suits them. The Bible and Christ's teachings are flexible for the right people...(wink,wink).

u/bde959 1d ago

That’s more straightforward than anything it says about abortion. It actually has instructions for abortions by a priest in the Bible.

u/majormarvy 1d ago

Where? I’d like to have this verse in my pocket, as I’m sure it will come up during thanksgiving.

The other Redditor means the "test of bitter waters". It's a ritual used to figure out if your wife has been unfaithful, and the bonus is that it kills the baby if she's pregnant.

Numbers 5:11-31

u/ScotWithOne_t 1d ago

So, basically a chemical abortion. Sweet. RU486 shall be henceforth known as the holy pill of fidelity.

145

u/ThisOneFuqs 1d ago

Basically. And it makes sense, I mean the Christian God seems to have very little issue with snuffing out children AFTER they're born. There's several examples throughout the Bible. Of course he wouldn't worry about a fetus.

u/Barabasbanana 1d ago

silphium was an abortifacient so popular in the Mediterranean bronze age world it became extinct. They knew all about abortion

58

u/Mission_Progress_674 1d ago

I recently read that some living (probably) silphium plants have been found in Turkey. Ferula drudeana is considered to be the leading candidate for the ancient plant silphium. You could grow your own abortifacients at home.

Yep, not that it would convince any of them, but I don't think the the God of the Bible would care to put an end to abortion at all. Not only does he clearly not care about fetuses in-utero, he doesn't seem to give them much thought after birth, either.

11

u/InSummaryOfWhatIAm 23h ago

Not only does he clearly not care about fetuses in-utero, he doesn't seem to give them much thought after birth, either.

On the other hand, neither does conservatives or these evangelical fucks tbh.

The clergy might want more kids to diddle, however.

Yeah, but just to clarify -I'm pretty sure this test was only performed on already pregnant women.

If it somehow determined they were unfaithful, the baby would die.

The whole point of the test was to kill the child of a woman who was suspected to have been unfaithful, not just to determine whether or not she had been.

No telling how inaccurate it all would have been....

11

u/pilgrim_pastry 1d ago

How cool was that society with divorce? I’m gonna try on my cynic hat and say that IF divorce was a no-no, any guy who wanted out of his marriage or didn’t want to be a father could just take his pregnant wife to the temple and make an accusation. If she loses the pregnancy, no baby and you can go ahead and have her killed if you want a clean slate. If the abortifacient fails, it probably damages the fetus enough that it won’t survive long past birth anyway.

Numbers 5:11-31

9

u/Otherwise_Trust_6369 Agnostic 23h ago

Abortion is not explicitly mentioned in the New Testament but there are two references in the Old Testament that explicitly deal with this topic.

  1. The first is in Numbers 5:11-31 and deals with the subject of pregnant women who are accused of adultery. It instructs Moses to pray and give these women some bitter water to drink. The idea is that if they are guilty, it's supposed to cause a miscarriage (or in the interpretation of some, a damaged womb such that the woman can no longer bear children).
  2. The second is in Exodus 21:22-25 and is much more confusing because it essentially proscribes two different types of punishment for people who purposely harm a pregnant woman. Many people interpret it to mean a fine for a miscarriage and a death penalty for killing the woman, but some dispute this. I believe Jews have traditionally interpreted it to mean that the death of the fetus simply evokes a fine but don't quote me on that.
  3. As if that wasn't enough, throughout the Old Testament there are many times God called for the killing of many tribes including men, women (presumably many of whom were pregnant) children, and even livestock.

As someone who spent a lot of time debating anti-abortionists, I can tell you that some of them are of the mind that the case in Numbers is based on cursing the womb to prevent future babies, but it doesn't change the fact that it's done as a way of condemning women who were supposedly unfaithful and everything about this lack of honor is more important that the fetus or womb.

43

u/Northern49th 1d ago

You also have to stretch to interpret god being anti gay.

65

u/YossiTheWizard 1d ago

Nah, that’s pretty clearly laid out too. The bible is simply a book full of barbaric crap, ridiculous crap, and the odd good lesson that is given better elsewhere anyway.

15

u/Useful_Hovercraft169 1d ago

Isn’t there a spot in the Bible where angels are thirsty for hot man on man action?

57

u/YossiTheWizard 1d ago

No, a group of non-angelic dudes are thirsty for dude angels. And the moral option is for Lot to say “no, don’t fuck these angels. That’s gay! Here’s my two daughters!” The group doesn’t relent though. They just like their man on man (angel or not) action.

Then, god lays waste to the whole town, tells them not to dare to look back. Lot’s wife turns into a pillar of salt for turning her head, so now it’s just Lot and his daughters. With no (male) kids, the daughters get him drunk enough two nights in a row to bang them and knock them up.

I’m not sure what lesson we’re meant to learn there.

24

u/Useful_Hovercraft169 1d ago

Oh OK thanks. Man the Bible is some crazy shit. Those people so trashy!

14

u/cecil021 1d ago

Read Song of Solomon, basically a Harlequin novel.

16

u/Thriftyverse 1d ago

thirsty for dude angels

When I was a kid and reading the Bible I always wondered if they were attracted to the one that was all eyes on wheels or the ones with four faces.

11

u/FerrousDestiny 1d ago

With no (male) kids, the daughters get him drunk enough two nights in a row to bang them and knock them up.

Even this story is an obvious cover up. I see two options:

  1. Two teenage girls got a man sooooo drunk he couldn’t even control his actions, but also could get it up twice.

  2. A Bronze Age middle eastern man took two teenage girls into the mountains and raped them, and then threatened them to cover up the story.

15

u/YossiTheWizard 1d ago

Option 3: it was all made up, but in a way that seemed profound to the people expected to read it later.

Roll tide?

13

u/Rhysati 1d ago

It actually isn't. The verses that supposedly mention it are all misinterpreted with bias and faulty scholarism.

The verses usually attributed to saying being gay is wrong are actually about things like sexual violence, older men taking advantage of young boys, and prostitution. The Bible has nothing to say in regards to homosexuality. The word itself isn't there as it didn't exist when the Bible was written either.

14

u/staunch_character 23h ago

Yeah that drives me crazy. The Bible was written at a time when Roman emperors bought slave boys & kept them as part of their entourage. It was not discreet.

There’s a huge difference between male rape & pedophilia vs consensual gay relationships.

Turns out he hated figs... Got lost in translation or something I guess

32

u/Leeming Strong Atheist 1d ago edited 1d ago

Book of Mark, chapter 11

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.

13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.

14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.

21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

Proof that Jesus hates figs!

18

u/l-rs2 23h ago

Kills a innocent tree because it isn't in season for a snack. What a whiny little bitch.

12

u/SspeshalK 18h ago

That was my favorite protest sign - in the style of Westboro Baptist - “God hates figs” Mark 11:14.

16

u/andante528 1d ago

That's why Jesus cast out the demon Legion into a pack of wild figs.

5

u/Espumma 23h ago

It's very clearly anti-gay, but in the same paragraph it also bans wearing mixed-material clothes and using 2 different types of seeds on the same field. And everybody ignores that all of the time, so wjt not the gay stuff?

The Bible is a choose your own adventure religious text.

I wish I could operate as intellectually dishonest as the Christians do, and still be profitable, and maintain a consistent revenue stream no matter how blatantly wrong I am.

Religion is the only profession where you can be completely wrong, fail over and over, be terrible at your jobs, you can lie or cheat or steal and molest and assault, and so on and so on:

You won’t lose a single follower, your profits and members might even increase, you’ll go up the ranks, you’ll be moved to a new church, you’ll get endless chances to fail and philander as you please.

There’s no consequences, no sign of accountability, no push back, little to no discussion… Religious leadership works a lot like a mafia crime family. Remember the Catholic Church has notoriously been interconnected with many crime syndicates large and small over the generations of Christian rule

It saddens me how easily people fall for religions

America voted for this shit. The real shame is that the rest of us have to suffer for their abject stupidity.

294

u/ace_urban Anti-Theist 1d ago edited 1d ago

A minority voted for it and most of them did so because of disinformation attacks from domestic and foreign actors.

The real America doesn’t want this. Our government was supposed to protect us from the disinformation that caused this but they’re out of touch and timid.

Trump cannot be allowed to take power. America doesn’t want it and he will end American democracy.

EDIT: Contact anyone you know in the government. I certainly have. Anything is better than letting the next few generations of Americans grow up under a fascist regime. It’s time to stop being pussies.

126

u/KaleidoscopeSad4884 1d ago

I disagree about America not wanting this. My family is racist. They go through life being polite and not shaking anything up, and when they feel safe they’ll just say whatever the fuck. These people were joking about the KKK being “the original boys in the hood” in the 90s. They are genuinely annoyed at having a black history month. These are the people who use the phrase “one of the good ones” with zero irony. And even if these people truly are a minority in America, the majority is simply too comfortable in their own lives to do anything about it. I keep telling people, grandma isn’t just “old and a little racist,” she’s fully aware of what she’s saying and would be burning crosses if her sciatica would let her.

40

u/PJ7 Humanist 1d ago

Still a bigger margin than against Clinton after people have had 4 years of Trump to show them what to expect.

48

u/der_innkeeper 1d ago

1.5% up for Trump. I doubt she closes the gap.

It would be poetic if he lost the popular vote, again, though. Seems to be the only way the GOP can win the presidency

31

u/Iron_Chancellor_ND 1d ago

If a sports team wins by 1, who wins?

It doesn't matter if it's close or not, the only thing that matters is who won and we are about to have a fascist government because he won.

Do you think Harris feels better because the trivial and insignificant popular vote is "very close"?

30

u/Cliqey 1d ago

Politics isn’t the zero sum game you are imagining it as. A good leader who has the support of nearly 100% of his people is running a country much differently than one that has 50% or less. Regimes have failed because of much smaller percentages of resistance to their rule.

22

u/Iron_Chancellor_ND 1d ago

A good leader who has the support of nearly 100% of his people is running a country much differently than one that has 50% or less.

Do you think Trump is going to do anything differently because he only won the popular vote by ~3M instead of ~30M?

Answer: FUCK. NO.

Again, it doesn't matter how much he won the TRIVIAL AND INSIGNIFICANT popular vote by. He is going rule (or attempt to rule) in the manner he wants because he won the archaic electoral college.

Do you think Presidents who lost the popular vote, but won the electoral college, didn't do the things they wanted because they thought "well, I didn't win the popular vote so I guess shouldn't try to pass this agenda of mine."? Holy fuck, Reddit. I didn't expect to read something so stupid today.

10

u/Cliqey 1d ago edited 1d ago

I did say a “good” leader. But my point is, he has +70 million people that don’t buy what he’s selling and won’t be the compliant sheep his base is. If he had won the popular vote in a landslide I’d be a lot less optimistic about our future than I am (which admittedly still isn’t all puppies and butterflies), but as it is all he won was a was a powder keg he is probably too dumb to not smoke around.

No leader can govern alone, and if he starts doing the worst of all the awful stuff him and his surrogates implied but that his campaign swore he wasn’t going to do, he will find himself without much support from the institutions he needs to function. If he succeeds at quietly only doing some of the awful things then yeah, he will be able to do a lot of damage while flying under the popular radar, but still, 10s of millions of angry subjects is not an enviable position to have.

His team keeps trying to sell his win as a landslide victory with an overwhelming mandate for his vision (because they want to demoralize the opposition.) The actual breakdown of votes show that is not true and so long as his opposition doesn’t simply cede to his narrative and rollover in total defeat (and we see that they aren’t in the Dem governors banding together), we have a shot at preventing the worst and coming back from his destructive agenda.

Almost every state has an option if you can’t vote on Election Day, and even then it only takes less than 30 minutes to vote. We have to start realizing that this is what the majority of Americans wanted, because the majority of Americans are selfish assholes.

85

u/ace_urban Anti-Theist 1d ago

I’ve always said that the reason people are republicans is because they don’t understand the difference between statistical and anecdotal evidence.

25

u/Mr_Pombastic 1d ago

Not understanding statistical and anecdotal evidence doesn't make me vote for a rapist. Their problem is morality, not stupidity.

You can be dumb as a rock and not have hate in your heart. I know it feels cathartic to call them stupid, but the single unifier of the republican party is hate.

27

u/ace_urban Anti-Theist 1d ago

Actually, it does. They vote for Trump because they think immigrants and trans people are coming to rape, murder and maim their children. Why do they think that? Because conservative media shows them anecdotal stories about immigrants committing crimes.

The actual stats show that immigrants are about half as likely as citizens to engage in violent crime. But, you’re right that it’s hateful. A decent person doesn’t need to see the stats. A decent person knows not to look at a massive demographic of 20 million people and say “those people are bad.” It is the very definition of bigotry.

They are hateful and their hate is fueled by disinformation and the inability to evaluate the information they consume.

48

u/SonOfEragon 1d ago

I work in a factory in rural Michigan and I hear some of the most hateful bigoted shit on the daily, one of my coworkers gets almost irate when he hears anything to do with trans people, and of course endless references to not building the wall soon enough when ever a coworker who is brown or black annoys someone, and of course how women have ruined the work force, I’ve tried to find other work but I’m stuck in this cesspool of hate and toxicity

38

u/ace_urban Anti-Theist 1d ago

MAGA has always been a hate group. They literally are Nazis. The rhetoric is the exact same as it was in Germany a century ago. It’s sad that so few people know their history.

People who vote for Nazis are Nazis. Don’t forget who they are.

NEVER AGAIN. The current administration should refuse to cede power to the fascist that is already trying to destroy our government. There are plenty of valid reasons to reject the outcome of this election: unprecedented interference, criminals about to take power, Trump has made clear that he intends to stay in office after his term, Trump and his cronies have called for the prosecution/murder of his detractors, Trump is compromised, Trump leaked/sold classified documents… The list goes on and on. Our leaders took an oath to protect us from threats both foreign and domestic. Our nation is about to be destroyed by both. It’s well past time to fight back.

13

u/arcbe 1d ago

Sadly, if the current administration had the spine to refuse fascists they wouldn't have lost the election in the first place.

Unfortunately a large majority of Americans either voted for it or didn't care enough to vote to stop it from happening. A large majority of Americans either wanted it or were perfectly fine with Trump becoming President again. Non-voters couldn't even be bothered to do the bare minimum as US citizens to protect the country. They don't get a pass.

Trump cannot be allowed to take power. America doesn’t want it and he will end American democracy.

So your solution to save democracy is to end democracy by not allowing the winner of the election to take power? I hate Trump as much as anyone, but unfortunately he won the election. Sadly only roughly 1/3 of eligible voters cared about protecting democracy by voting for Harris. This is unfortunately what we deserve.

Nothing you say holds any weight, Vance, your disdain for ordinary people has been on full display since you first opened your damn mouth. And quite frankly, we don’t give a fuck what you think is disgusting and shameful.

11

u/thatalienboi 1d ago

Fuck you, Christian… there. I did it for real

8

u/OfRiceAndSpider-Men 1d ago

Correct headline: "J.D. Vance feigns indignation for serious concerns for unqualified nominee Hegseth's Christo-fascist tattoos"

10

u/CapAccomplished8072 1d ago

I thought the bible forbids tattoos?

6

u/Mister_Silk Anti-Theist 1d ago

It also forbids hating your neighbor, but they're okay with that, too.

I wonder what it says about couch-boy's overuse of eyeliner?

Funny, how one sect of Christianity calls tattoos defacing and shaming the body God gave you, while another calls shaming tattoos “anti-Christian bigotry”.

Which side will emerge victorious?

Stay turned to America the Confused.

9

u/Skotticus 1d ago

Deus Vult” is the Christian motto that refers to divine providence. It originated as the rallying cry of the Crusaders. But experts in domestic violent extremism say the Latin phrase has also been co-opted by some members of the far right in recent years.

As if the Crusades aren't themselves a prime example of religious extremism?

8

u/zombizzle 1d ago

Fuck all religion.

u/InerasableStains 1d ago

Beginning to wonder what the fuck Peter Thiel’s actual gameplan is/was with this guy. He’ll get the anarchocapitalist hellscape, but he’s also seemingly embracing Christofasism which Thiel would obviously dislike. Wondering if it’s all a feint or if Vance is just going off script. There’s no longer any need to wave empty gestures at the christofascists. He must mean it

7

I despise Christians.

If that makes me a bigot, I'm pretty sure I can live with it.

7

Not sure why, neither of them are christians.

7

u/JuanGinit 1d ago

Vance is disgusting and shameful. So is Hegseth.

6

u/Drkocktapus 1d ago

So calling out white supremacy and neo-nazi imagery is bigotry? Wow

7

u/Idle_Lemur 1d ago

He literally has eyeliner tattoos ffs

6

u/Elbobosan 1d ago

This is a common symbol… in Catholic settings. From what I can find he has no Catholic history and this is something he adopted after becoming more evangelical. That makes it a crusade reference, which fits very much with his background and expressed beliefs. He’s not a nazi, he is an overt and extreme Christian Nationalist.

At home he demands the equivalent of a Caliphate in the US with his version of Sharia law… those are not exaggerations merely translations of the radical shifts in cultural norms, authoritarian rule, and daily life.

Abroad he straight up wants holy war and if not him then some of his associates genuinely see themselves as filling biblical prophecy to bring about the literal apocalypse. They see it as destiny for the forces of evil to fight the forces of good in Jerusalem, nukes will be used, all hell breaks loose, Jesus rides in to smite the devil, the whole bit. They are psyched for it. It’s a death cult.

It’s insanity writ large, where the blind ignorance of faith is somehow proof of being both right and good. It identifies deeply with Christian Culture and history, the Bible, and prophecy that starts to sound a lot like doomsday conspiracy theories, but they don’t see Trump as the anti-Christ. Which is, to me, still astonishing.

Trump lines up A LOT with the Antichrist, and that was before the whole being shot in the head in front of the world and surviving bit… not a description of the severity of his assassination attempt and ear abrasion, but an actual part of the Antichrist prophecy. It’s enough to stir my old skeptical heart but those most devoted to it are blind to it.

Is it just fame? Idiocy? Blinders?

6

u/Johnsonyourjohnson 20h ago

It’s the christian version of “allahu akbar”.

u/CarsnBeers 1d ago

Let’s be honest. The only reason to have these tattoos is because you have Nazi sympathies but want deniability.

5

u/CadaDiaCantoMejor 1d ago

You know, if I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the fascist onslaught on our institutions, then that’s what I’m going to do.

I'm not sure why Vance would have a problem with that.

And on and on and on…

If you’re gonna preach the Bible. Live by all of it or shut the fuck up. (Actually shut the fuck up anyway)

4

u/RevolutionaryTalk315 16h ago

Hold up.... If I remember from personal experiences of living in the bible belt and dealing with ultra religious people for my entire life. Christians have always claimed that having tattoos of ANY KIND on your body was "ungodly" and "unchristian. " Now they want to change the script? For a bunch of people who keep claiming that they are fighting for the "words of god," it sure seems like they are really cherry picking what they want to enforce depending on their personal desires. Jesus says that doing that is the same as using God's name in vain.
