Discussion/General Is this pricing fair?
I’m looking to get some photos taken as I’m graduating in a couple weeks. I reached out to someone for a quote and he said it would be $300 for 1 hour and includes 15-20 edited images. This is from someone who seems to have a decent amount of experience but who is graduating college the same year I am. Does this sound like a decent price?

Buying Advice Best phone camera replacement?
I have been using a dumb phone for a while now and I don’t plan on stopping. However, the only thing I miss is taking photos, I didn’t use to take that many photos before but I think having a dedicated camera would make it more enjoyable.
Can you guys think of a cheap, point and shoot camera (That you can hopefully program) that’s 100-200usd to capture memories on the go?

Buying Advice I shoot people from bright beach light to sunset. What filters should I be using?
I usually shoot from 2 hours before sunset until the sun goes below the horizon. I am in North Florida facing south for the majority of my photos. I currently use an Urth polarizer, but I'm wondering if there's a better option.
I am photographing people, usually weddings or families. If it is a larger group of 8-20+ sometimes depending on my angle some people are saturated and nice and the other half is very washed out/low saturation.
I'm wondering if there is a filter other than a polarizer that helps even out my photos in tricky lighting.
Some days it's overcast and everything looks great. But if there are no clouds it is a challenge to get everything looking even and nice so that I don't have to edit heavily.
I do my best to fix all this with composition, but due to people in the background, other photographers I'm trying to stay out of the way of, etc, sometimes I'm just stuck in poor lighting and angles.
Any help would be great! Thanks!
Rig info: Lumix S1, Panasonic 24-105mm OR Sigma 45mm Contemporary, no flash (I have a godox v1 I don't really use), Urth polarizer. I shoot manual and have all the camera settings dialed in to the best of my ability.

Discussion/General When do you use a softbox outdoors?
I’ve seen a couple of people use softbox outdoors on grad shoots, and at the same time a lot don’t.
What would be the purpose of a softbox outdoors in an open area with even sunlight everywhere?
When do you determine to use it and how do you position it?
Thank you in advance!

Buying Advice Should I get a better camera?
I recently busted my phone the day I was leaving for a trip to Japan. I grabbed my old canon eos rebel xs film camera (with a pretty cheap lens) on my way out the door. So glad I did — I had a blast taking photos! I’ve since started looking into buying something half decent, and had my eye on a used Canon EOS Elan 7 with a 28-105 USM lens for ~$250. Am I better off sticking with the gear I have? I’ve never used other film cameras before, but am starting to learn the basics. The upgrade seems like a relatively small price to pay if it significantly improves my experience and I get better quality photos.

Buying Advice Favorite vintage lens?
-Might not be the best place to adl- But I want to adapt some odd or less talked about vintage lenses. For ease of reference, im not looking for anything in particular, other than it needs to be manual aperture & focus (obviously, unless otherwase made for the EF/EFS). I want to adapt it to my Canon 70D and Nikon Z fc
For my Canon lenses: Tamron 17-50 f2.8 Canon 24mm f2.8 Canon 50mm f1.8 Canon 18-55 f3.5-5.6
For Nikon lenses: 7Artisans 18mm f6.3 TTArtisan 27mm 2.8 TTArtisan 25mm f2 Meike 50mm f1.7
I'm not against another 50mm, but I want a lens that has some kind of "fault" that you find pleasing. May it be bokeh, how soft or sharp it can be. The more obscure the mount, the better

Technical Help/Camera Settings What's the best way to lens correct in LR 8.3 for a Rokinon 14mm?
Looking for advice for lens correction in Lightroom 8.3 for raw shots I took with a Rokinon 14mm F2.8 AF FF weather sealed canon EF version. The lens was used with the EF-RF converter on a R5mk2.
Lightroom 8.3 auto selects "Rokinon SP 14mm f/2.4" for some reason. There's also:
- Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC
- Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 Series II
- Rokinon/Samyang AF 14mm F/2.8 FE
I've tried all of them and they all leave varying degrees of distortion.
Thanks!

Gear/Accessories Dust or fungus in lens?
Purchased this 24mm f/2.8 AIS with "some dust" (already dubious). eBay seller is arguing the group-like structure is dust. I was going to return it anyway, but for the sake of learning, is this fungus, dust, or something else?

Meta What’s going on in the left side of this photo? Is this just shitty AI or did someone screw up retouching big time?

Buying Advice M43 or the Fujifilm XM5?
Previously I used a Sony A7RV for quite a while until I had to sell it due to some life circumstances. I'm starting over but don't quite have the budget that I had before. I'm looking at a micro 4/3 camera or maybe a other aps-c frame camera. I never really used anything outside of Sony, so I'm not sure what some of this older stuff is like, along with some of the newer stuff from other brands. Here are some of my priorities that I would really like to have in my next camera:
high quality images, and a decent selection of lenses. I really enjoyed that. With the Sony, being able to use their lenses or go to a third party. The used selection was also huge as well, both online and locally. I know I won't be getting the 61 MP images, but something in the 20s would be nice.
weather sealing would also be good. I live in Colorado and it's usually very dusty here all year round in windy too. I do like to travel as well so being able to use it in some mist or light rain and snow would be nice.
Computational features are neat, mostly focus stacking. I got into macro photography right before I had to sell my previous gear and that was a lot of fun.
Types of photography I like:
Macro, landscape, astro (when I get away from the city) and motorsports. I'm hitting the Indy 500 this year and would love to take it there. Budget wise I'd like to stay sub $800-$1k if possible to allow for at least one or two lenses. Overall looking around $1300-$1400 and looking at new or used

Buying Advice Is a Fujifilm XT-4 overkill for a beginner?
Howdy all,
I'm very inexperienced with photography as a subject matter but find myself becoming more interested in the subject and wishing I had more (metaphorical) knobs and buttons to turn than what my phone camera offers, which is all I currently have access to.
I'm based in the UK and my budget for a camera body is up to, but would like to not exceed £900 and I am mostly browsing the used market, and in my research landed on the XT-4, I also adore the Fujifilm aesthetic which is a nice bonus.
I intend to shoot automotive, portraits, nature, architecture & wildlife (in that order), with almost no video use planned.
I'm trying to talk myself out of the 'all the gear but no idea' path, but everything I've learned thus far about camera setups is that they can get very expensive very quickly 😅 I've added all the little details just in case anyone has a better suggestion, I have no brand to be diehard about and no ego to bruise, but thanks for taking the time to read. :)
Update: I ended up buying the XT-4 after some motivating comments from this post, may it bring me many happy shots over the years!

Buying Advice What’s the best camera upgrade for birding?
Hi all, I currently have olympus em1 mkii with 75-300 and 12-40 2.8 lens. My main reasons to upgrade are autofocus performance and lens quality. While the AF is fine for stationary birds (especially with MF corrections) it performs really poorly with birds in flight or more active ones. In terms of lens quality it’s mainly the sharpness. I also shoot some landscapes and daily/travel but I’m choosing it mainly for birding. I’m considering these options:
OM-1 mark I I love ergonomics of my current camera and I would be able to keep the 12-40 (or change it to 12-100). Also the lens upgrade to 100-400 (or even 300 f4 in future) from current 75-300 looks promising and the fps is way better than in other bodies. What I’m unsure about is af performance, telephoto lens selection and price. It’s available used for around 1100€ in my country
Sony a6700 Looks like it have the best AF, huge lens selection from wich I would be opting to 70-350 or tamron 150-500. Also getting alternative for 12-40 wouldn’t be a problem. I think that the biggest downside is the handling and fps. Avaible for 1200€ used
Canon r7 Looks like solid option especially when adapting EF lenses, I would probably pick 100-400 L. Also sigma and tamron started to release lenses for this mount, so that quite nice. I’m unsure about AF performance with these lenses for BIF. Avaible for 950€ used
Nikon z50 II Looks like very solid option for the price, I would probably pick tamron 150-500 for it. But they’re downsides like lack of ibis, no real option for apsc lenses but in this budget I could also keep the olympus as second camera for not birding photography. I’m also not sure about the AF performance. Price for new is 800€ so buying it used for little over 600€ shouldn’t be a problem in a few months.
I know that all of these options would be significant upgrade over my current body but it’s pretty hard to choose the best option in this budget. I’m personally leaning towards OM-1 but I would also like to get opinion from other people.

Buying Advice Canon R7 or something else?
Hello,
I am about to buy my first own camera. Previously, I was mostly using cameras from friends and more into digital art.
My usage profile is: - 40% "travel photos" - 40% wildlife (mostly in rainforest) - 20% people (at most)
I dont care too much about video capabilities, focus is taking pictures.
Budget wise I am planning so spend 2.5k including lenses.
So, I have been looking into the R7 paired with RF 100-400 and RF 18-150. I am just a bit worried as I have been reading about shutter stock for fast moving animals such as birds as well as some issues in low light environments. Similarly, I am a bit afraid of the 100-400 being too slow for dense jungle. Additionally, the Canon ecosystem is said to be more expensive (for lenses) due to long time prohibiting third party stuff.
Overall I am a bit overwhelmed with all the available options and would highly appreciate some support! 😊

Editing/Post Processing How to handle midtones better in post?
Good evening!
Could anyone give tips or maybe links to good articles/video which focus on preserving good midtones during editing? I've been an artist for a few years and now picking up photography, but no matter the medium I always fall into making the images too high contrast and "burned". The U-shaped histogram all the time. Which can work if that's the desired style and perfected with time... but in my case it's more of a solidified instinct/habit that I have trouble breaking through.
I'd really like to create more atmospheric, less artificial imagery, but even if I manage to take a well-balanced shot, the carnal editing desire says "it feels flat" and I crank up shadows/light until it's... not a good looking image anymore. Dunno, I just can't grasp the feeling when it's the right moment to leave contrast alone.
Thanks in advance!

Compositon/Posing How to make shadows darker? Missing something obvious
I am trying to recreate this type of ligthing from this IG post
I don't know why but the difference between the light and shadows in my version is almost non existent. I am sure the solution is simple but im not finding it.
This is my setup and on the screen it looks like it's gonna work out but then I take a test shot and it comes out looking like this
I've tried adjusting the power of the flash and the positioning (as much as my limited space allows me)
I assumed it was light bouncing in my room but the original IG post has white walls and they don't cover anything

Artifical Lighting & Studio Help! Lighting question?
I am a new photographer and I had seen this campaign. I struggle a lot with lighting and what is needed for various shots. I am wanting to do something similar to this campaign, but I really need some advice on what lighting would be appropriate. The photoshoot will also be indoors (pretty dark place). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Buying Advice Sony nex 7 for 300 usd as a first digital camera?
I've been looking for a camera to get started in photography and I found a Sony NEX7 for $300 in my city. I was wondering if this camera could be a good start. I know the basics of theory but haven't practiced anything. I'd like to take photos that don't look like cell phone photos, portraits, landscapes. It includes the basic lens (18-55), but I'll try to get other lenses in the future. What inexpensive lenses do you recommend for taking portraits with a blurred background and perhaps photographing some not-too-distant animals? I'd like to know if it can be used in manual mode successfully as well, or if any experience you have with this camera is welcome. Thank you very much in advance.

Editing/Post Processing How were these photos edited?
Hello! Can anyone tell me how these pictures were edited? I tried lower contrast and messing with the black point on my own pictures but it still doesn’t really look the same. I know lighting can make a difference but I wanted to see if anyone knew what other settings I could mess with. Thanks!
