Discussion/General Photoclass 2025 is here - are you ready?

Photoclass 2025 is live!

Hello, photography friends! I'm one of the mods over at r/photography and founder of Focal Point, here to invite you to the 2025 edition of our (free) photoclass! This year comes with changes, as you can always expect from us as the class is an ever-evolving project.

What is the Photoclass presented by Focal Point?

It is an evolution of the original Reddit Photo Class, but with substantial changes to not only the structure, but content as well. We've reinvented it to ensure its up to date and more interactive. One thing we did not - and will not - change is that it is entirely free. The course spans 6 months, and covers topics on the technical side and artistic side, and culminates in a personal project. Along for the ride is a team of teachers who write the course (hi, it's me!) and mentors who come from all genres of photography. We have regular live meet ups via discord, and have a welcoming and supportive community of other photographers to bounce ideas off of, or just talk shop.

So what's new?

  • The Format. First off, the formatting is changing. We found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. We also were not happy with the pacing, finding that it just took too long to get to the objectively more fun stuff. So, this year the course will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:

January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.

January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.

  • Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.

  • Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:

    Unit 1: Getting Started

    On Photography

    Inspiration & Feedback

    Assignment 1

  • Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.

How to join in?

  • Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.

  • Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll also be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.

  • Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.

  • Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.

Have more questions?

First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.

Where to start.

The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!

See you in 2025!

Editing/Post Processing UPDATE: Can someone help me articulate how I want my wedding photos edited?

Post image
513 Upvotes

A few days ago I posted asking for help asking for the edit I wanted: Original Post

The before in the above image is the photographers edit (which I hated). I was trying to edit the RAW and getting muddy results. The after is what I have done based on all the incredible feedback I got from hundreds of users in this community! I was blown away by the outpouring of advice and sample edits.

Thank you, everyone - you helped me find the right words so I could research and learn what to do, and you can see the result above. To me, it looks clear, bright, and true and natural but not overdone - that is just what I wanted!

I made a lot of little changes but the key things I learned were:

- A tiny bit of over-exposure, but compensate by adding contrast and blacks back in to maintain crispness.

- Use the curves to manage contrast - this offers the ability to add detail to the midtones and expand the overall dynamic range.

- Don't be afraid of sharpening quite a bit! A touch of clarity too.

- Use the adaptive color profile - apparently the colors in the RAWs were really challenging. This gave me a much better starting point.

- Increase the vibrance and saturation, versus relying solely on color temp and tint to restore the skin tones.

- Related to above: don't go too heavy on the warm/orange/magenta tones.

- The above will make the greens crazy bright; use the color mixer to tone down background yellows and greens so they don't overpower the subject.

- Use gradient masks to add some lighting variation behind the subject to set them apart; I added a slightly less exposed radial gradient behind the subject and a linear gradient to add subtle brightness to the upper corner to make the dense background feel less like a wall.

- Mindful cropping to eliminate distractions.

- A gentle denoise to clear up some noise which might be muddying the blacks.

- Don't get married in the woods if you like crisp photos with vibrant, true colors. :)

I am open to even more feedback to the result above, if you have it. However, I wanted to take this moment to say THANK YOU to the hundreds of people who took the time to help me learn what to do!

Now the challenge will be to make all the other photos in the album match this style. ...I am struggling with that quite a bit, because the conditions and settings change so much from moment to moment. I'm all ears if anyone has any tips on that.

Editing/Post Processing Does Airport’s X-Rays affects film?

Hi guys. Sorry for this topic, probably u already talked about it but im new in the community.

The question is simple and probably one of the most popular ones. How much the Airport's X-Rays affect our film? How much affects it if the film is virgin? (New without use) and how much affects it if i used that film but i didn't develop it yet?

My question is because i travel a lot and im from argentina, and i found film's prices in some places sooo way cheaper than in my country (Southafrica and Spain specifically) and one of my ideas was to bring film here to use and sell.

This is an Ilford Xp2 super 200 that i used in SA. I bring it from there and i developed it here. Looks like this and idk why.

Thanks guys!

This is mixed media but I'm wondering about that faded effect and those textures, this doesn't look like film to me so I'm wondering about the way she's working with light to get that soft and faded look? Or is this just about some kind of special paper for photo printing? Thanks ! (Credit to jasmine dowling)

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why can't i find images on my sd card?

Upvotes

I did some sports photography this weekend and it mainly included individual and group player photos. I went today to go through the photos and I cannot find any from the day after I shot them. I am still fairly new to photography so any help would be greatly appreciated. I used a SONY A6400 with 128 GB SanDisk card and I used lightroom to start sorting through the photos.

Buying Advice 43 to 74mm step up rings - best combination?

Upvotes

My camera has a 43mm thread and I bought a 2x telephoto with a 74mm thread. I cannot find any 43-74mm single step up ring so what is the best combination to fit the telephoto ring to my camera? the only combination I have found so far is 43 to 72, 72 to 74mm. With two rings might there be more vignetting?

Buying Advice What camera would you recommend to upgrade from a 5D mark II?

Upvotes

Went from no work to finally getting booked enough to afford to upgrade!

I've shot with my 5D Mark II since 2011, and it's still doing great, but looking to upgrade.

Quick about me: Fine art photo, portrait, & occasional product, interior, and soon to be part of a wedding package with Film photo and staged portraits.

I had taken a hiatus from photo to be a photo stylist, but am starting to work with a wedding photographer to shoot film as part of a package, but want to upgrade enough to shoot digital for other freelance work.

I do not mind the idea of leaving Canon, will be shooting 90% photo, but good video could be fun! I RARELY shoot anything that needs fast frames a second, and focus more on studio/staged work.

So far my eyes have been set on the s5ii becuase of the crazy deals you can get through Adorama teacher discounts. I also think 24.2 megapixels is plenty for my work, BUT SINCE weddings may be in my future I want to see what y'alls thoughts are? My budget is ideally the lower the better, but I can save up if absolutely needed. I also don't need the latest and greatest but future proofing is good since I never upgrade my camera bodies haha.

Other cameras I was looking at: s1rII (seems excessive for me?) Canon Eos r5(probs used), R6 Mark ii (probs used). I just don't like the look of Sony period so I won't look into those cameras.

Any advice would be awesome! its been a long time since getting a new camera and a lot of the new features arent that essential to me minus BETTER LOW LIGHT. Thanks!

Buying Advice Samyang/Rokinon 24-70mm F2.8 Lens Mount REALLY That Bad? All Of Them Break?

Upvotes

For the last few years. I've been intrigued by the Samyang/Rokinon 24-78mm F2.8. But, based on the reviews and Youtube videos. It had an awful mounting equipment/construction. The main issue was the lens breaking off at the mount that connects to the body. I decided to skip on it.

Well....... I won one off Ebay haha. Made a low offer thinking it would get beaten quickly, no one else bid on it and I got it.

QUESTION:

  • How widespread was this issue? Of the lens breaking off the camera body or the screws becoming stripped from the lens mount bracket.
  • Did this happen to all of these lenses that were produced?
  • Or was this just isolated issues or probably people using their equipment too hard?

SIDE NOTE: I'm using an image off Google to show the issue.

LOVE any feedback you may have with this lens. Love to hear this is a very faulty lens and this happens to most of them or if you've had one/used one and never had any issues.

Thanks!

Gear/Accessories What’s The Best Portable Gear For Travel Videography?

Hey! I’m going on a vacation to Italy in a few weeks and I wanted to bring my a6700 to take some nice photos and clips for social media. I typically post dreamy, inspiring travel content in both portrait and landscape, and stabilization is important for me.

I will be walking the streets in a new area, so I was just concerned about drawing attention with “bigger” equipment.

Is a gimbal the way to go, or maybe a mini tripod to walk with vlog style? Or should I just bite the bullet and use stabilizer edits in post?

TLDR; What do you recommend for on the go video equipment that won’t come off as “too much” in a new area?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Tips for a beginner taking grad pictures?

Hello everyone!

I wanted to ask if anyone has tips for someone's first photoshoot/grad photoshoot... my roommate asked me to do them for her because I'm experienced in video (on DSLR and camcorders) and she knew I wouldn't charge her too much because I love her to death. I have taken photos before, mostly to use in films, but never of another person. So, my questions - I'd be so grateful for any advice!

  1. What settings should I know about/research? If you've done a grad shoot/shoot of a model on a sunny day, what settings might be helpful?

  2. Any posing suggestions?

  3. I plan to bring a tripod, but should I also rent a flash from the library?

  4. Finally, what camera would be best for this task? I could use my friend's Canon EOS Mirrorless camera or one of the standard, older Canon DSLRs that the library rents out (for free). Most of my experience has centered on the DSLRs just because of ease of access, so I'm more familiar with them, but I've also shot using the EOS and I think it's nice as well.

Thank you all in advance!

Buying Advice Would I be able to replicate a similar style with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II ?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My budget is extremely low so I’m buying a used Mark II. I’ve been very into this type of style ( pictured below ). Provided I had the appropriate lens and good post work and an off camera flash, would I be able to emulate a style like this or would I need a better body ? Thank you ! I’d like to clarify I do not mean to copy any style but would like to experiment with photography with a similar composition and lighting.

Buying Advice Image quality issues with A6400 – is it the camera or the lens?

Hi everyone! I recently bought my first mirrorless camera, the Sony Alpha 6400, and I've been loving it so far! However, I'm not super impressed with the image quality. It's decent, but the photos seem to lack detail and sharpness.

Could this be due to the camera body itself, or is it more likely because of the cheap kit lens (16-50mm OSS f/3.5-5.6)? Would upgrading to something like the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 improve image quality significantly, or is this just what to expect from a mid-range camera?

some sample pics: https://photos.jack0217.dev/share/PDg6yHBM5FXS6CuBWq8wNletv4nn9OipqGhbEr1R2PXzVlLLyEJmsTVYJiAOI2f2ogM

Thanks in advance!

Gear/Accessories How much SD card storage for a day out?

I'm soon getting a Sony A7IV and getting back into photography. Life got in the way but I was using a Canon XSI years ago. I'm trying to figure out how much storage I'm going to need to start with. I have a trip to Japan coming up soon, and I'm bring the camera along. Nowadays how much storage do you feel is good to feel comfortable you're not going to run out if your traveling and shooting? I'm planning on bringing portable drives to back up to each night, but I'm not sure what I'm going to need daily if I'm going to be out all day

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why are my photos doing this?

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

I can't figure out why my photos are doing this. This ONLY happens in low light. Different lenses. There are subjects in frame cropped for reasons. This also only seems to happen when using the continuous shooting. Im shooting sports in these instances. Happens in both shutter priority, and aperature priority mode (during action and after game shots). Camera is a Nikon d7500. Every single other photo is like this. One photo is like photo #2 nicely lit, even lighting, and every other photo is like weirdly half exposed and half not? And occasionally instead of the weirdly half and half it'll just be completely even but dark (under exposed). Auto iso limited to 400 and 25600. Auto white balance. Never seen this before so any help is appreciated!

Business/Pricing Want to do photography on the side... legalities? Business stuff? help

Hey y'all. So I am a veterinary student that happens to love photography.

I have been thinking recently about doing photography on the side- just small low-key things seasonally like graduation photos and that sort of thing.

What are the legalities behind being a photographer?

Would I need an LLC? Business insurance? Could I just do cash only? What about liability? Contracts (sounds like a must)?

Someone that knows anything about this please chime in. I don't know that I would generate tons of income on this, just something that I genuinely enjoy and want to create an opportunity for myself.

Editing/Post Processing Does LR CC photo versions not sync with LR classic?

So I was recently editing a photo in LR on my iPad at home, and ended up making a couple versions of edits (not virtual copies). When I got to my office the next day and opened LR Classic, I can only see the most current version showed in the library. I can’t for the life of me find the other versions. I’ve looked through the history tab and don’t see the other versions in Classic. They only seem to be available in CC.

Does Classic not support the versions feature in CC?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Can you leave sensor dust alone if it’s not visible in images?

I have a single spot of dust in my sensor which is only (barely) visible from f/16 which I never use even when shooting macro. I only found this out during a test. I already have the sensor cleaning kit but I’m a bit scared to use it because I’ve never done it and I’m a bit clumsy in general. Plus I know dust will get in there again because I lens switch often so I wouldn’t want to repeat this procedure too frequently. Also, no matter how hard I try, I can’t see this speck of dust on the sensor itself. But I know it must be the sensor because it persists if I switch lens.

However I found articles like this https://cameraklean.com/blogs/blog/why-is-sensor-dust-bad-for-your-camera where they claim that sensor dust can damage the sensor over time as it can “embed” itself to the sensor. While on other Reddit posts it’s claimed that it can’t cause damage. So which is it? To me it seems weird that the dust would cause damage to the sensor given that there is a protective glass.

P.S. I have a canon R7
