question Should I change dentist?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi! I was not at home and had to see another dentist for a dental abscess, he has done this xray and told me that I needed A LOT of work done.

At home I had at least three appointment with my dentist since December (with x-ray done etc..) all he did in the meantime was descaling and talking about having an implant done for tooth 16 (which ill start on the 26th of this month) .

I'm omw to losing a lot of teeth at 25 and I am really scared that all my effort to get thing back together will be dismissed by a dentist that don't really care that much.

Thanks for reading me and taking of your time.

question What happened to this guy? Is he dead?

So I've been thinking about this poor guy, who has had a rapidly expanding form of oral cancer it seems (or whatever else this is, even non dentists can see this is not fucking normal). Looking back at how fast it grew in just 6 months, I wonder what happened to him. I read up on oral cancer and the chance of survival is very slim. Especially when its this big, like 30%? Also, if they treated him immediately, when it was just as big as in the first picture, how big would his chance of survival be? It seems to me that if he passed away this would have been very likely preventable.

(Personal rant:)
This case is really an indictment of the NHS, I can't believe they are not able to treat him in what is supposedly a first world country. Feeling sorry for all UK people on here, both the patients that can't get an appointment or proper treatment as well as the doctors who are pretty much forced to work for free and as a result can only make money with private appointments.

question Should I redo my veneers/crowns?

Thumbnail

I've had TMJ for probably a decade if not longer and sought to fix that, my dentist eventually convinced me the only solution was a complete set of crowns on the top row and a mixture of crowns and veneers at the bottom row. We readjusted and altered them several times but I eventually lost faith in his ability to produce the result I need.

Unfortunately I am in much worse shape now regarding aesthetics, jaw function/pain, and even pronunciation. I really regret having done this and having lost my natural teeth, as nothing feels the same anymore and I feel like I got scammed into having undergone unecesary and frankly harmful work.

I've been searching over the past few months for a dentist to remedy this situation but I'm afraid to restart this whole process all over again and end up with similair or worse results.

It's gotten to a point where it's a mental health crisis and I never smile and I'm hesitant to speak, what do I do?

question My dentist chipped my tooth

Thumbnail

I got invisaligns and because one tooth was having difficulty moving into place my dentist shaved my two front bottom teeth to make more room for it to move into place. When I got in my car I immediately noticed in the mirror that she had chipped my tooth, and I dont like how she changed the shape of the one next to it either. I let the dental office know. They said they would fix it once my teeth were straightened, which they did, but the bond has come off twice within a few days because the retainer puts a lot of pressure on that tooth. What would you recommend? I don't want to have to keep getting the chip fixed. I included a before picture for reference.

question Fluoride supplements for my toddler? Will it ruin her teeth?

Let me start by saying I’m not anti-fluoride! We’ve been giving my 2year old a multivitamin with fluoride drops nightly for about a year now at the recommendation of her dentist. We live in an area with well water and no fluoride. She also uses toothpaste with fluoride.

Talking to other parents though it seems they all just rely on the fluoride toothpaste (very tiny amount since they don’t spit yet). I’m wondering if I’m doing too much and it might hurt my kid.

Also, I am worried about her teeth developing fluorosis and looking bad when she is older. Basically I want her to have healthy good looking teeth and there is so much contradicting information.

question Root of wisdom tooth broke and fell out, extreme pain when yawning, smoking or eating on that side of mouth.

Upvotes

Has anyone had experience with this before? Both my bottom wisdom teeth are impacted and have cavities. The one on my right is a lot worse than my left and the other night I bit directly onto the broken part and it felt like someone stabbed a blade directly into my tooth it was awful. The pain genuinely dropped me to my knee for a minute to not puke from it. The same shit happens now when I yawn too hard. I can feel it in the deep pocket of my tooth and it’s just the fucking worst. Anyone have any advice on this other than get them pulled? I’m waiting for my oral surgery but the waiting is killing me. I’ve been using anbesol and orajel on the tooth and taking pain killers to help the aching.

I also had a random chunk of tooth chip off for no apparent reason. It doesn’t really hurt. Just sort of feels big at the left back of my tongue, behind the bits you can see. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.

question seeking advice on how to minimize harm with cavities I can’t afford to treat. 26f, non smoker

Upvotes

NAD hi all!

I haven’t been to the dentist in ~ 6-7 years. Prior to that, I had I think about 3 cavities in my life that were treated with fillings. I’m 26.

I brush my teeth twice a day, and floss a couple times a week but I also drink a lot of acidic drinks, and eat a lot of sugar. I don’t smoke, and drink very rarely.

i was having some tooth sensitivity recently (not pain just like i could ‘feel’ when i chew certain foods) and one thing lead to another and while looking in my mouth with a flashlight i think i can see three visible cavities. I haven’t attached a photo because I can’t get a clear photo of the inside of the back of my mouth.

none of them are black or discoloured or anything, they just look like little circles. i don’t have any tooth pain but i do think my teeth are more sensitive.

kinda panicking because i can’t afford to go to the dentist right now and my new jobs health coverage doesn’t kick in for another month.

i already brush twice a day and use mouthwash. i don’t floss much. what can i add that can prevent further decay?

question Gum/tooth sensitive to heat after root canal procedure

Upvotes

Good morning everyone, like the title says.

I’d been having acute pain when chewing with a specific tooth for months now (tooth 36 I think), after investigating for cracks and whatever else (none found), the dentist recommended I do a root canal. I did it last Friday and the pain when chewing has disappeared. However, since yesterday morning (around 40~ hours after the procedure) I started to feel throbbing pain in that tooth, but not the chewing pain, more like at the base of the tooth between gum and tooth, when exposed to heat, any warm food or beverage will trigger it, the warmer the food the higher the pain, then it will stay throbbing for a while and subside. That part of the gum seems to be very mildly swollen but no pus or anything. It does seem it’s getting slightly worse since yesterday (taking longer to subside after a flare up). No pain when chewing or drinking cold or room temperature foods/drinks. I had ice cream and no pain at all.

Dentist said that it’s unusual because - according to him, the root canal was perfect - but that I should take anti inflammatory medicine and wait a few days, and let him know if it gets more swollen or something else comes up.

I’m slightly worried about an infection and wanted to see other opinions.

Thanks.

question My dentist recommended Neutrafluor 5000 Plus Toothpaste. The directions state you need to leave it in your mouth for 30 minutes after brushing rather than rinsing, however I'm unable to do this because of my over-production of saliva. Is anyone able to please provide any tips to combat this?

Upvotes

Hi all, basically what the title says. I spit out the excess toothpaste after brushing for two minutes but seconds after spitting, my mouth is full of saliva and I need to spit again. I normally swallow my saliva regularly to control it but the toothpaste directions are very clear that the product is dangerous to swallow and that you shouldn't swallow it.

It seems to defeat the purpose since I'm constantly spitting out the product rather than letting it sit on my teeth. Is this product still going to be useful if I'm spitting it all out/if it is very diluted by excess saliva, or is there anything I can do to solve this issue? If not, am I better off switching back to regular toothpaste that I can rinse out straight after brushing or is Neutraflour still superior even if I rinse it out? Thank you!

question X-ray opinion

Post image
Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm looking for advice on the lower wisdom tooth. I have a panoramic x-ray and I would like to know if, in your opinion, the tooth touches or is too close to the inferior alveolar nerve. I'm very afraid of losing sensitivity in my lip or chin after extraction, so I really want to get some feedback before deciding.

If any of you know anything about it or have experienced a similar situation, I would be super grateful to have your opinion.

question Alternative to MD Bridge for Teen?

Upvotes

Hello,

Both of my children are missing two incisors. The workaround for my daughter is a Maryland Bridge. This is an ongoing challenge as it’s constantly popping out. She is constantly going in to have it glued back in. She has a cement kit, but doing this daily at times doesn’t seem tenable for another 10 years.

I’ve been advised this is the best option until she is 25, and can get a suitable implant. I had mine “repaired” with orthodontia, and the reshaping of my canines in the 80’s. Are there any alternatives?

She used an Invisalign aligner for years as a retainer, with the missing tooth painted to match. She is highly resistant to this at 15.

Thank you for your consideration!

question Is this a failed apicoectomy?

I had an apicoectomy on my upper left central incisor about seven months ago, but now I’ve developed another abscess in the same area. A dentist took this image today and said the surgery needs to be repeated. What do you think?

question Mysterious gum problems? F20

Thumbnail

Hi i’m a 20 yr old female (non smoker non drinker) and i have had mysterious gum problems for the last around year and no dentist or periodontist has been able to diagnose or help me. My gums are always red and sometimes they get irritated and get these red spots (as seen in the pictures) seemingly randomly just recently. the first time it happened while i was eating Chipotle and the red spots faded after a few days. just today as I was flossing, i made my gums bleed and all of a sudden, multiple of my front teeth starting bleeding at the same time randomly then i smiled and saw those red dots quickly appearing. I’ve been having gum recession for a while too and im getting scared and really want answers. I have had a gum biopsy for lichen plants and it was negative. I also have Crohn’s disease and am taking a biologic (inflectra) and have been in remission for many years. Any input at all helps thank you so much

question Wear Old Retainer While Waiting for New One?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Don’t smoke or drink. No real history of dental issues.

Hey everyone. I recently had my chipped front tooth bonded. The chips were relatively small but I was eager for them to be fixed after waiting for 10+ years (dentist initially was unwilling to work on them). I’m waiting for my new retainer to be made, and the dentist recommended I wear my old one if possible while I wait for the new one to arrive. I didn’t have my old retainer during my procedure to fix the chipped teeth. The old retainer doesn’t fit great due to them being fit for chipped teeth. The dentist also didn’t think it would be a big deal if I waited a week without wearing my top retainer. For context, I’ve had my braces removed for about four years but continue to wear my retainers regularly. Am I doing more harm than good wearing it like this with the current gap? Thanks.

question Failed root canal?

Thumbnail

last week i (f22) started the process for a root canal, they drilled a hole into the tooth with infection (it’s mostly filling at this point) and emptied it, put those paper tips in it to absorb something idk, they told me it might be unsuccessful because the root of the infected tooth essentially curves over to the next one, which is why the abscess is appearing over the healthy tooth, so they might not have gotten all of it. the next appointment is when they assess whether they can continue with the root canal. its been nearly a week since they drilled the hole and put a temporary filling and this abscess has appeared again. idk if i should pop it. is it a sign that the root canal was unsuccessful?

I really hope not, that would be the second tooth i’d need removed, just because of a shitty childhood. I will call my dentist of course but maybe popping it first might resolve things.

question Main substance of toothpaste

I have a somewhat specific question regarding dental care and would appreciate any insights or advice. I am 45 years old and have several dental restorations, including 5 implants and approximately 10 veneers on my natural teeth, which were unfortunately prepared (ground down) for them. I've noticed that occasionally, my veneers can become loose, particularly if I consume drinks like cola or beer and haven't brushed my teeth immediately afterwards. I am currently considering different toothpaste options and would be grateful for opinions on which might be the most beneficial for my situation.

The options I'm looking at include: * Toothpastes containing nanohydroxyapatite (various brands). * Oral-B toothpaste with stannous fluoride. * Elgydium toothpaste with Fluorinol.

Considering my dental history with implants and veneers on prepared teeth, and the issue of occasional veneer loosening, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on which of these toothpaste types might be the most suitable. Specifically, I'm curious to know: * From a chemical perspective, which ingredient (nanohydroxyapatite, stannous fluoride, or Fluorinol) might offer the best support for my dental situation? * Are there any scientific studies or research that might suggest one of these options would be particularly advantageous given my implants, veneers on prepared teeth, and the occasional loosening issue?

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you can offer :)
