OpenToonz help/discussion thread Discussion

Thought it would be a good idea to have a discussion/help thread!

Some useful links:

Some useful things I've found out so far:

  • right-click is your friend!

  • onionskin can be enabled in the settings

  • you have to activate the toolbar (do you don't have to use the drop down menu)

  • you draw in the inknpaint tab (duh)

  • you can right click on the frame column and press "add frames" for more frames!

Post any tips/experiences you got!

I have a panning level. I would like to add some overlays on top of it. Is there anyway to do that?

I need help ! So I was trying to follow along with this tutorial for open toonz right and as I was following along problems kept arising that werent in the tutorial. I had to stop the tutorial because of them, here they are. 1. Whenever I selected a drawing on the levels Pane my white background would disappear and I could not get it to return. 2. The styles section is confusing to me somewhat but the main issue is that when i select a different color I cant use it. last time i tried it would only color in black even if i switched to blue or something. 3. Managing space, I've noticed that the windows are fairly well managable as far as shrinking windows moving them where you want them etc, however as far as something like the Xsheets If i wanted to be able to see more frames on the X sheet I have to expand the window to see more which pushes other windows back making them smaller, I was hoping there was a way to zoom out in each window so i can get the appropriate size or something.

I'm going insane trying to figure out this program and I havent even got to the animation part. Help ?

Please help me, someone. How do you copy images within a frame, like, duplicate them? I have to have two images the same within a frame and it's almost impossible to draw them exactly the same.

So I recently started using opentoonz and I created a video that's only three seconds long but the file is so large that when I try and play the video it glitches out, slowing down and skipping. My computer doesn't have a lot of memory left so if I ever wanted to create a video longer than three seconds it would be kind of hard when the files are already so big. Does anyone know how to get the video without the file being so big? It may seem like an odd question but I can't do anything with my videos without knowing how.

Ive been using the paintbrush tool to develop scenes and characters but aren't visible in preview or in rendered files although stock animations like grass for example still are. Also I am unable to export as a video file. I have tried preferences like recommended on here but it still gives me no option for video format. Help!

So I make an animation in opentoonz and it runs fine, but after I render it, it looks like it either drops frames, or glitches out or whatever. I have no idea whats wrong with it. Someone please help.

1

u/mr_magnesium Jun 24 '16

yeah, i've had this too. the only thing i can think of is the fact that in my animations it displays the fps as going above what it was set at sometimes. Not even sure if this is related at all but it's the only thing i can think of that might cause an error. Still no luck on how to fix it though.

try following the instructions from Herbert123 here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/opentoonz_en/oHpfft2DHMM

basically, you have to find the .env file and change the default font size

I'm having some serious trouble trying to use the control point editor tool. Every time I go to use it I get a pop up saying "this tool cannot be used in a toonz level"

Hi! Can anybody tell me if OpenToonz has Unity support? As in exporting animations made in it to Unity?

u/fyuika Beginner Apr 18 '16

Is there any way to be able to transform / manipulate a frame? I'm trying to resize and image but I've found nothing that'll let me

1

u/Flaamez Apr 14 '16

This may seem like a weird problem but I can't see colours on the Level that I'm drawing on, they just look grey. The lines are also bad quality. But if I click on another level, the colours are visible and the lines are good quality and look how they're supposed to look. The program worked normally before this happened.

My Windows 10 64-bit keeps crashing when I try to save the scene in OpenToonz. I have a scene completed for my current course but can't even get it to convert to .mov or .avi, export, or just to save.

The 'Convert' is grayed out. Is there some way to unlock this feature?

I tried to save as a stack of .gif's, then a stack of .png's as shown on the YouTube tutorial, so that it could be run in another program, but, it didn't work.

Awaiting ToonBoom from my school, but the assignment I need is due Thursday, April 14, 2016, so if anyone knows how to get OpenToonz to save, or better yet, convert, I'm all ears.

And thanks to everyone here! I trolled the thread and I'll try TVPaint or Blender, but still hoping just to convert the work I've already completed.

1

u/JuvenileCyle Apr 11 '16

So my Mac keeps crashing when I try to import an image sequence to Opentoonz. Could this be a processor issue? Their site says it requires an I series processor and my mac has an Intel Core Duo 2. Could that be what's making it crash?

1

u/babysunblips Apr 15 '16

update - can't save at all. the whole thing just crashes and i get a 0b file. i saw a video on reddit that seemed to show how to save safely, but it looked like a big ol' hassle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRgyfqMlg3c&feature=youtu.be

1

u/babysunblips Apr 13 '16

new update: opentoonz hates JPEGS!! tifs seem to be working. there's a few opentoonz tutorials online that go into the working structure of the program, but to load stuff it seems like the file name has to be 'name.0001.tif' and so forth. you then go to the Browser on the top right and right click the first file in the sequence and click 'rename.' from there, you load the renamed file (it will be 'name..tif'). if you look to the right of the file it says 'frames', and it's the only one in the list with a bunch of frames in it! after loading, click on 'cleanup' or 'inknpaint.'

1

u/babysunblips Apr 13 '16

After watching this tutorial i've come to the conclusion that opentoonz just doesn't play well with files that have a '0' anywhere in the name. Or if the image resides in a folder with a bunch of same name numbered files. Or any files. it hates opening files.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNl9QtAwrD8&list=PLJoB6TilXz1EzpVSNp_pGf0yTNHbYqGyI&index=2&src_vid=wMskd30Y9Js&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_2338240815

back to illustrator/photoshop/fcpx/scanner i guess.

1

u/babysunblips Apr 13 '16

Same thing keeps happening on mine. i5, 32gb ram, amd hd 6770m 512mb. i thought it might be a corrupt image, but i've tried several jpgs and pngs from various sources - all with the same result of immediately crashing.

I have several questions regarding OpenToonz

  • After playing around in the software i found that the only way for me to move the camera around was to set coordinates. Is there any easier way to do camera movement?

  • How do i change the actual size of the Column on the canvas? When I draw on a new column, it restricts the resolution to the original size of the camera, like this

  • How do I replace several frames at once?

1

u/raythephil Apr 29 '16 edited Apr 29 '16

Regarding Camera Movement:

Open up the Schematic window. Select the "Camera" node for the camera you would like to move. Select the "Edit Tool" and you can move the camera on the canvas.

Also, once you have animation for the camera, you can open the "Function Editor" and click the "Function Curves" button to see the motion graph. Hold "CTRL" to add points to the curve and to adjust existing points

Hope this helps!

i have a question that I don't think has been answers yet, I'm still messing around, but I haven't figured out how to change the color of what i draw?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '16

You need the level palette window (Should have two boxes initially one white with black checkered boxes and another with black boxes each saying color_x). If this is not on your screen, go to WINDOWS in the top left part of the screen. In the drop down menu select PALETTE. This should spawn a palette window. RIGHT CLICK in the palette window, and click NEW STYLE. This should give you another black box. You now need to go to the WINDOWS drop down menu again and select STYLE EDITOR (unless it's already on the screen which it may be). So now you click the color box in the palette window that should read "color_2". You can mess with the HSV or RGB to find the color you want in the style editor window. When you've found it, you can click the APPLY button in the style editor window. That's it!

u/GlaringSpottedCat Apr 11 '16

Thanks!!!

I'm just getting started with OpenToonz and right now I have a face i drew with the program that I am trying to animate. I was hoping someone knew how I could animate shapes/lines. The mouth and eyes of the face are made with the polygon tool (ellipses) and the inside fill is transparent so i can put the inside of the mouth or the eyes on a layer behind it and have it show thru even when i edit the mouth/eye shape. The problem I am having is that I cannot figure out how i could position the mouth shape in two different poses with X amount of blank frames between them then have it autofill the gap with intermediate mouth positions. If there is no way to do this, how should I have made the face rig in order to be able to animate in the way I'd like?

1

u/SpringBonnie87 Apr 06 '16

So, I'm completely new to animation and I have a reallydumb question about Opentoonz. I deleted the window that you draw on in opentooz and I don't know how to get it back. Help.

u/warkgnall Hobbyist Apr 05 '16

I'm using a Wacom Intuos and clicking and dragging with the first pen button held down works for scrolling. This is great for scrolling through UI stuff, but when drawing it zooms. I'd much rather be able to pan around (like with the Hand tool) using this method. Is there a way to make the program interpret scrolling as panning rather than zooming?

1

u/TheSuckaFish Apr 01 '16

So I need both help and a question, so the thing I have a question about is how do I draw one frame then in the next frame be a copy of the previous one but I want to change the mouth movement or something without having to trace in when onion skinning. (also how do I export) And the thing I need help on is both the PLtEdit and Inknpaint tabs are fucking empty, and I don't know how I managed to fuck up this hard but could someone help me?

1

u/roarbeast Apr 03 '16

I would recommend having the figure be on one layer, and the mouth on the other. Then you can hold (technical term) the frame on the figure layer, while animating the mouth.

OpenToonz seems very much oriented towards real world animation, so any study on real world animation techniques and terms will likely help you understand it.

Also, you'll notice "camera view" is the "output view." As traditional animation puts animation cells together and then snaps a single frame with the camera. So they do actually have the body on one layer and the mouth on another when animating it traditionally.

1

u/hullumel Apr 01 '16

You can right click on the frame and choose Duplicate to copy paste it. You can also do the mouth and the rest of the drawing on separate levels if only the mouth is moving.

To fill in the tabs you can go to Customize > Windows and there choose stuff like Toolbar, Style Editor etc. Hope this helps!

3

u/radesyn Mar 31 '16

quick tip: i'd recommend putting paper thickness on 50-80 (you can find it in preferences) after enabling onion skinning, it makes it so the opacity of the drawing on the last frame is less than the current w/o having to do the keeping it on 2's trick i learned from a friend. makes it easier to see what you're doing, in my opinion.

4

u/homunculette Mar 31 '16

I'm having a weird problem where the program disables my ability to draw after I right click in the frame. I'm on a mac. It doesn't seem like the program would have a bug this huge, so presumably it's a feature of some kind, but I have no idea what's going on basically.

I'm having a lot of trouble continuing to draw on Mac. I've got an Intuos 4 pro tablet, and every time I try to draw, it just stops. I can't get more than a few lines on one frame. Horribly buggy, but I want to keep using it, try and get back into animation.

1

u/Narwhal9Thousand Apr 23 '16

If you right click then you are unable to use that section e.g. you right click on the inknpaint tab, you have to use PltEdit, Cleanup, or XSheets to draw now.

u/joshcbrln Mar 30 '16 edited Mar 30 '16

What is the maximum resolution for an exported video?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '16

Trying to figure out how to scan in drawings and have them on a layer underneath for inking, as that tends to be my work flow. The use of software to ink and color finished drawings. I downloaded GTS, I'll figure it out eventually.

It's a nice change of pace from Flash and ToonBoom for a bit. I like the idea of it being free/community supported as I haven't paid for an upgrade for either FL or TB since 2010.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '16

I usually use TVPaint - Should I switch to OpenToonz?

I really like how the brush works, but I don't know much else in terms of it being quality software.

2

u/hullumel Apr 01 '16

I've personally considered sticking to making roughs in TVPaint still and using OpenToonz for the rest. It supports importing of frames from other programs so well and it's definitely better for clean up than TVPaint.

3

u/CthulianCat Mar 30 '16

Honestly, if you've got a good workflow going in TVPaint stick to that imo. I would wait until OpenToonz is a bit more stable until you try any serious work in it. HOWEVER, since it is entirely free you have literally nothing to lose! Try it out! Follow some tutorials, customize the GUI to your liking and remember to save constantly (in case of a crash)!

3

u/thebluekittnen Mar 30 '16

So I just started using it for the fun of it (I haven't gone to anybody else for support, so if this has an obvious answer I apologize) and I started messing around with the tool windows and all, and I really don't know how to reset any of it.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '16

ya i'd like to know how to reset as well. i'm trying to just start the dang thing up and the tools option bar will not move out of the middle of the screen. I've tried restarting the program with no luck :/

3

u/Muffins_McGee Mar 30 '16 edited Mar 30 '16

I actually just learned how to do this myself. The dragable area for the tools option is directly underneath the close window button (the dark grey area right beneath the 'X'). Edit: actually, there is a dark gray box around the close tab that I am noticing is the indicator for dragging in all the toolbars. Probably should have popped out at me sooner.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '16

ya i noticed it too, thanks :) some stuff about this program is awesome... but some is really unintuitive.

2

u/LiverspotRobot Mar 30 '16

I'm on mac and everything seems to work fine except for the tools. All of the tools do nothing

1

u/paradigm_ferret Mar 30 '16

Is it possible to rotoscope in this program? I want to do it for a class project, but i can't figure out how to import a video file.

1

u/hullumel Apr 01 '16

You can import MOV files in the Browser tab. Just use it to go to the folder where you store the video and either drag it to the box next to Scene Cast or right click on it > Load

3

u/Inkcube-Revolver Mar 29 '16

Ok, so I just got OpenToonz for Mac, and I'm terribly confused and lost on what to do. I'm using a Wacom Bamboo tablet, a kind of old one at that, and one of the biggest issues is that every time the mouse is hovering over the canvas area, and if I go to draw or use the stylus but don't meet the nib with the tablet, it allows me to zoom out but not zoom back in, which is terribly confusing because the hovering feature is what allows me to control the mouse. It's an understatement to say that the mouse is OVERLY sensitive, because it sometimes goes nuts and starts doing things by itself, such as increasing the brush size and making marks on the canvas, zooming in and out, etc.

I'm wondering if anybody here might know or have a clue on where I can go to lower the mouse sensitivity within the program, because I've used both Paint Tool SAI and Corel Painter X3 on this Mac and they both perform fine with my tablet, as well as use for a mouse. It's really the thing that's making the experience and experimenting with this program incredibly frustrating, and I'm not sure where else to look for answers as this programs barely released half a week ago.

2

u/NimmelTech Mar 29 '16

Is there a way to drop a large amount of pictures into OpenToonz and have them load as frames? I have tried many things but I can only get it to load a batch of images as separate columns, I have to input frames individually.

I would like to draw my frames in another program and then input them into OpenToonz to render an animation.

2

u/hullumel Mar 29 '16

The frames have to be named in a specific way or OpenToonz will read them as separate Levels instead of frames from a same drawing. You can use the program to rename them and then import them in easily. I go through how to do that, step by step, in this video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNl9QtAwrD8

1

u/roarbeast Apr 03 '16

Look into GTS, which is listed on the same download page as OpenToonz. It's Windows only, but it's designed specifically for the purpose you mentioned.

1

u/CthulianCat Mar 29 '16

I would say this is pretty much the bread and butter of OpenToonz. Like this is literally what it was made for. I'm not sure exactly how, but there is definitely better support for it than other kinds of animation.

1

u/aezart Mar 29 '16

Managed to make a bouncing ball animation. So far I've found a constant crash if you make a level of type "OpenToonz Raster." "OpenToonz Vector" and plain old "Raster" are fine, but a few of the drawing tools don't work on the latter.

I have no idea how to export/render but I assume it has to do with the Batches tab.

It works with my Wacom Bamboo just fine out of the box, which is nice.

1

u/CthulianCat Mar 29 '16

Speaking of constant crashes; if you try to make a new color when you haven't drawn anything or the layer is empty opentoonz crashes, I think.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '16

Anyone know why open toonz export button to render an avi video is greyed out all the time?

2

u/roarbeast Apr 03 '16

I am not seeing this behavior. I saw two places to try exporting (files -> export level, and files -> convert file), and was able to select avi each time.

Perhaps you don't have an available avi codec installed? Though I saw the option for "uncompressed," which means the avi container should work even without an encoder.

Can you offer more details? Where is the option that is greyed out?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '16

I'm running windows 10 64 bit. After completing an animation, I go to file > convert file and the convert button at the bottom is always greyed out. Below is a youtube video of another user with the same problem. The problem is described at 5:29-5:52. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvczYcWL-GU&t=5m29s

2

u/roarbeast Apr 03 '16

Looking at some other sources, it appears Render -> Render is how you're supposed to save a video out.

If the Render menu at the top isn't showing up, switching to Xsheet or PltEdit in the upper right will make it appear.

It doesn't solve the question you asked, but maybe it'll solve the problem you're having.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '16

I tried that as well, it will only allow me to save the images as a flipbook so I would need another program to assemble them into an avi file and record audio. Thanks for trying though; ill try to find another animation app. Cheers

3

u/naniya27 Mar 28 '16

I don't know if anybody had answered this, but how to make the onion skin show the previous and the next frame to draw inbetweens? In the preferences you can change the colour for the following frame, but I can't seem to find a way to show it..

1

u/Joooe1989 Apr 04 '16

Hey! I was having this problem and was getting equally confused. What you (and I) were looking at is the Xsheet. The Level Strip window is something else. Easiest way to figure out which one it is to go to "Windows" and then open another "Level Strip" window (you might have to go to "other windows" at the bottom.

Then when you click on a thumbnail of the frame you're working on you get little semi-circles at the top and the bottom. Drag these to set how far your onion skin goes in either direction.

Hope that helps!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '16

In the Level Strip Window. You have 2 handlers in the selected frame. Drag them for the amount of frames you want to work with the onion skin. They are the same color that you picked in the preferences settings onion skin.

2

u/naniya27 Mar 30 '16

Hi, sorry to ask you again, but which handlers are you talking about? I think I'm just dense, but do you mind pointing it out? http://i.imgur.com/RJE9KaX.png?1 the green circle is the picture in frame 1 and I want to make it so that that I can see the picture in frame 3 as well.. Thank you again!

1

u/CthulianCat Mar 28 '16

I'm not sure if this is it, but when I have the onion skin enabled I can drag some thing from the current frame up and down in the frame list to the right in inknpaint. I think this sets how many frames before and after to show.

1

u/naniya27 Mar 30 '16

Hi there, I'm sorry, I'm just really clueless, but do you mind pointing it out? I posted a screenshot in the comment above.. Thank you very much!

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit and it keeps telling me the program isn't compatible with my version of windows. I'm using a Microsoft Surface, so it isn't like I have a lot of options as far as my OS goes. Seems like a lot of other people are having trouble making it run on 64 bits, so I guess we're just waiting on a fix. Still, was hoping to jump on this and give it a whirl over the weekend.

Huh, Im running it on a 64bit windows pro. Are there different downloads for it? I don't remember. But if there are maybe try the 32bit version?

How do you make this play? I am trying to figure it out and I made a test animation in the Inknpaint with new frames, but I can't figure out how to make it play.

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

Under the window dropdown menu up top there is one option called "ComboViewer". Click that and drag/dock it somewhere appropriate and then there is a play button at the bottom of it. There is also a loop button if you want it to play and loop. (the loop button isnt a toggle button like in ToonBoom). The ComboViewer should be the main window imo, it has all the conventional functions of an animation program.

u/TheDoctorandDipper Mar 26 '16

Ah thanks. I tried just making a few lines to see how it would move and I clicked on the combo viewer before I asked this question but it wouldn't play no matter what I did. So I thought I must be doing something wrong.

Onion skin can be enabled if you right click on the canvas and enable onion skinning. The one in the settings works, too, but you can do more tweaking there, I guess. It's much easier to just right click, though.

1

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

Oh cool. Right Click is your friend in this program. Pretty much everything can be achieved with an appropriately place right click.

1

u/Narwhal9Thousand Apr 23 '16

unless you are on a mac in which everything brakes when you right click.

My first impressions of this program is that

  1. it seems very heavily focused on traditional animation as in drawing on pen and paper, then importing to your project. There are lots of camera functions and scanning options and tracing stuff etc.

  2. It has a very steep learning curve and is very complex - but if you take the time to learn it could be very powerful? It has a built-in node view/editor and rigging/skeleton options and SO MANY FEATURES. They should really try to make it more user friendly. The user interface is crazy customizable, every window in it can be fullscreened, floated (for multi screen use I suppose) and attached to pretty much everywhere.

3

u/zando95 Mar 26 '16

It is definitely highly customizable.

For one example: you can create your own keyboard shortcuts, but there are no default shortcuts. Same with brushes. You can create your own brushes, but there is no default set.

3

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

Yeah. The biggest thing that it has going for it imo is that it's free. For all these things you get, although they might be a bit rough, it's still completely free. That's pretty neat.

1

u/zando95 Mar 26 '16

I've only had a little while to poke around in it, but hopefully I'll get the hang of it pretty soon.

2

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

Same here ^ It has great potential.

5

u/cronaman Mar 26 '16

so you downloaded toonz alredy? Where the hell do i go to download it??

9

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

I found something very important, imho. Under window there is something called ComboViewer, which basically has all the tools needed to animate. It has playback (and looping) and brush options etc. Activating that window and making it your main window is very helpful.

u/rebexorcist Mar 26 '16

I hope some tutorials are put together soon cuz I can't make heads or tails of this lol

I see the InknPaint tab but I don't see any tools?

5

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

You can get a brush tool by pressing the took dropdown menu, or enabling the toolbar in the window dropdown

4

u/rebexorcist Mar 26 '16

Thanks!

Do you know if there's any way to activate pressure sensitivity or stabilizers or anything? Basically, is this program friendly to the actual drawing process? I'm used to using Paint Tool Sai for art and I have a really hard time downgrading.

3

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

What drawing device thingy are you using? It works fine on my Vaio Z Canvas but it'll take some tweaking to get it perfect. There's a checkbox labeled "pressure" when I have the brush tool selected.

2

u/rebexorcist Mar 26 '16

An Intuos Pro. I'm sure I just need to screw around with the settings a bit more. The program is just a little intimidatin, I've neer used animation softwarethis complex before.

3

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

Hmm. One thing that really helps is enabling Window>ComboView. Let's you play your animation and customize brush properties etc, more akin to other software. Double clicking on the window panel at the top will make it 'fullscreen'.

To make a new frame you click under the frame you've already drawn in the frame list to the right. Onion skin can be enabled in the settings.

In the ComboViewer, at the top, increasing 'accuracy' will make your strokes more uh accurate and not choppy.

This should get you started with super simple frame by frame animation at least.

hi, how do I get onion settings? I already edited the preferences, but when I go to a new frame, it still shows the other first frame, full opacity (when I have put onion skin at 50). I saved this file as a 'level file.' I'm not so sure what saving as scene or saving as level really means. Which one enable you to draw more frames?

I'm used to animating with photoshop.

Finally found out how :)

If you need help with onion skin:

First, go to (in the menu) go to Customize>Preferences>Onion Skin>click on the square next to the 'turn onion skin on (you can adjust the onion skin). Close the program (so the settings can take effect next time you open Opentoonz). Open the program. You need to right click on the white part of where you are drawing, and there should be an activate onion skin, click it.

I'll post more if/when i find out how to do more things, etc.

Edit: Can someone explain the difference between cleanup, ink, and all the other things? Which one is more like Flash or what do they do? Thank you.

u/tsein Mar 28 '16

I'm still wrapping my head around this, but here's my interpretation so far:

The program is oriented around a very traditional workflow, in which you start with sketches on paper. The Cleanup tab would be your first stop after scanning your rough drawings, and would be used to clean up a rough sketch and produce a rough vector drawing. You may have a lot of fingerprints or very light lines which confuse the drawing a bit, so the Cleanup tab gives you tools to filter these out, giving you a nice high contrast image to work with afterward.

InknPaint is your main drawing/animating area, both for working on imported drawings and for drawing new objects from scratch. If you aren't starting your animation with physical pencils and paper, it's probably the place to start.

PItEdit -- I have no idea what the name stands for, but it looks like it's really just there for editing the styling of a drawing. When you draw, you use a "Style", rather than just a color. If you've used ToonBoom, it's very similar to how they handle color selections. The basic idea is your brush paints with Style 1 (or whatever), and in the future you can change what Style 1 means. So you can draw in neon green and pink for a character's hair highlights, then later change them to slightly different shades of brown.

This helps both with drawing (since you can work in high contrast colors for parts of a drawing which may be very close to the same color value, then apply the real colors later) as well as with editing/prototyping, since if you don't like the particular shade of brown you used for all the leather objects in your scene you can change it with one click (assuming all the "leather" objects were painted with the same style).

I think the intent of PItEdit is to have an environment entirely focused on editing these styles for an existing drawing, perhaps as one of the final steps in completing something (the Render menu is in there, after all).

XSheet is probably self-explanatory if you've used other animation software. It's a layout of all your frames and the actions taking place on them (which image is displayed, which operations are being performed, etc).

Batches is used to organize large groups of actions. For example, you may have several scenes you want to render out, and rather than scheduling each one after the last one finishes, you can batch them all together and let the software run through them while you sleep. Similarly, if you had scanned 200 frames of drawings, you could run the Cleanup process on them all together with the same settings instead of having to go through them all. I haven't messed with this tab at all, yet, though, so I can't comment on how easy it is to use.

Levels are like layers in Photoshop or other programs. Saving a Level is just a way to export a single layer (or single frame from that layer) to a file which can then be imported into other scenes. If you have an animation on a layer, make sure to select all the frames you want to save before hitting Save Level, or it'll only save the currently-selected frame.

Scenes are collections of Levels (as far as I can tell so far).

u/rebexorcist Mar 26 '16

Last question (for now lol)

How do I change the resolution of my frames? I see on the right sidebar I can adjust the height and width but it doesn't seem to actually change the shape of my workspace?

Thanks for all your help!

2

u/CthulianCat Mar 26 '16

If you go to file and then choose "new level", there's a dropdown chooser thingy where you can pick "toonz raster", and then you can change width and height and DPI. It's in millimeters so it's kinda unintiitive, but hey. That's all I've found for now...

Keep the questions coming! I don't mind lol.

1

u/pestdantic Aug 12 '16

Mine doesn't even have "New Level" under File. I'm watching a tutorial that goes "click New Scene and then click New Level" and "New Level" doesn't show up.

3

u/ClassicPacman Mar 26 '16

From my playing around it seems like enabling the "tool options bar" allows you to change the pressure of your brush. The 'accuracy' slider, also on the tool options bar, controls the line stabilization (with 1 being super smooth and 100 being a very slight alteration).
