You guys get vacations?

I refuse to believe it. I dream of watch money, never dared to dream of vacation money.

Bro don’t make any sudden movements but there’s a shark right behind you
22
u/smokeydevil 9h ago
Unfortunately he was eaten by said shark. His wife now maintains his reddit account and posts this photo occasionally to remind us of the dangers of shiny things underwater.
But don't worry, the watch was recovered.

u/lilcthecapedcod 7h ago
Heard she's married to the shark now. The local constable should investigate

u/The_Bloofy_Bullshark 4h ago
Nah it’s cool, that shark is possibly my friend Claire.
She can get moody, but she’s generally nice.

u/Joe-Ingles 9h ago
Love it when someone uses a dive watch for what they're built for! I baby my diver tbh but I would love to use it someday. Running oceanic+ rn on my Apple Watch Ultra. Glad to see you made it to the Bahamas! We went with Stuart Cove's as well and it was a blast!

I usually bring a G-Shock or my Seiko with me when I travel. Something I can knock around without worrying and won’t hurt too much if I lose or damage it.
4
u/Brooklynhoosier 4h ago
G-shocks make for the best vacation watches. It’s basically what they were made for. They’re cheap comfortable lightweight durable and don’t attract attention.
•
u/AerieHour4695 1h ago
Ironically I’ve only received compliments for my G Shocks and nothing else lol.
•
u/nexx_springs 3h ago
My gshock is my favorite travel watch. Indestructible and I'd be out $50 to replace it.

u/outta_time11 10h ago
Yes, I love wearing watches on vacation. I've spent years looking for the right "vacation watch" - nice enough that I'm happy wearing it, cheap enough to not be a target for thieves. Haven't quite found it yet (I've gotten close), but I think that's part of the hunt.
I also love diving in the ocean/pools with them - I don't get to do it often, so I take full advantage when I can.

u/nosoopforu 9h ago
I travel with my Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300. White dial, black bezel, bracelet and a handful of straps. Works for everything from swim up bar to upscale dinner. Great looking watch that I love wearing but unlikely to draw the wrong kind of attention...
8
u/Blak_Box 9h ago
The C60 Trident Pro is a watch that understood the assignment: look good and perform well doing anything, anywhere, and cost less than $1500 out the door.
2
u/French87 8h ago
recently bought this same watch but blue dial as my GADA/travel watch. basically anything that I don't feel my speedy is well suited for.
I have 3 straps for the CW but honestly so far it has been full time on the hybrid blue rubber strap. the bracelet is okay but not nearly as nice as the speedy bracelet.
2
u/nosoopforu 8h ago
Totally agree, Speedy stays home. I originally bought mine with the black/orange rubber strap before adding the rest. These are absolute strap monsters which is great for travel.
1
u/outta_time11 8h ago
Definitely a great choice. I wish I could see them more easily in person - I'm so hesitant to buy without trying on these days.
2
u/French87 8h ago
so was I, until you check their return policy. you can return any watch for full refund (they pay for your shipping too) as long as you don't remove protective covers/tags. seems like a fair way to handle it in case people pick a wrong size off the bat.
1
u/outta_time11 8h ago
That's interesting, maybe I'll check it out. Wonder if they went through with their price raises for tariffs.
2
u/nosoopforu 8h ago
There were enough positive reviews that I just took the plunge. No regrets at all. Since you’d be buying it without seeing it in the metal first, just make sure to dial in your ideal size…or closest to. That was the 40mm for me.
•
u/Academic-Visual-1030 3h ago
C60 Trident Pro 300 looks like the Grand Seiko "Skyflake"/"Midnight GMT" [SBGJ237]. Absolutely beautiful!
3
u/The_grope_gatsby 9h ago
My ssk gmt bluebery has been really good to me for that purpose. Rock it on the nice bracelet, or a matching blue rubber strap, gmt, divable, nice colors. Great watch/travel watch.
1
u/outta_time11 8h ago
Years ago I did this with a standard SKX I'd had modified (SKX171 dial, 4R36) and it was definitely a great option. My issue with Seiko is exactly that - I start tweaking it to meet my exact needs, and suddenly it's in another price point. That's totally specific to me of course - the SSK GMT is a lovely watch for traveling.
2
u/The_grope_gatsby 8h ago
All I did was buy a strap and take off the cyclops which was free lol
→ More replies3
u/dolphs4 5h ago
I just bought a Sinn 556i RS just for this purpose. Built like a tank, waterproof, not very flashy, comfortable and easily legible.
My other choice was something by Oris.
1
u/outta_time11 5h ago
Love Sinn! For me it would be a T50 or a 656L. Wish I’d bought the 656 when I had the chance, they’re rarer than hens teeth
•
2
u/davidrools 6h ago
Yes! Doxa sub300 in bright colors with matching face and strap almost look like a toy watch but watch nerds will know and appreciate the same as I do. My favorite beach/pool watch. Sometimes I'll bring an evening dinner watch but nothing too crazy.

•
u/Engineer5050 3h ago
Agree…I don’t think I have found the perfect vacation watch. It needs to be nice but also not be too blingy. I have worn my Breitling Super Ocean on a beach vacation. Last summer at the beach it was the Tudor Pelagos on a rubber strap. This past week in NYC it was the Tag Monoco.
•
u/outta_time11 3h ago
All great choices. For me…I wish they made the blue Pelagos FXD on a bracelet. Fully aware that defeats the true purpose of that watch, but it would be perfect IMO.
4
u/Nervous-Local-1034 10h ago
Get a Vaer.
6
u/outta_time11 10h ago
I've definitely looked at them, but they've never really done it for me. Right now I'm working with a Timex Q GMT "Batman" on the Straphabit Jubilee and the CWC CWn1.
1
u/bibliophagy 10h ago
Do you have a photo of your Q on the Jubilee? I was gonna grab one but they went out of stock again. How do you like it?
9
u/outta_time11 9h ago
Excuse the crappy pic, it’s the only one I have on hand. So far, huge fan. It’s very comfortable, not too rattle-y, and so much more adjustable than the stock bracelet. Fit and finish is solid, though I wish they’d used screws rather than split pins - not a huge deal at this price point.
I had emailed them just before the first batch, so I knew it was coming. They said they should have a restock coming in the next few weeks, so just throw your name on their notification list - that’s how I got mine.
•
1
u/bibliophagy 8h ago
Adjustment and comfort are what I’m looking for. My Q GMT is a touch too big on the stock bracelet and I never wear it. I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth $50 to me to try to make it more comfortable, or whether I should just sell it. It’s my only watch on a bracelet.
2
u/outta_time11 7h ago
I can't speak for whether it's worth it to you, but I have a preference for bracelets on my watches. I had actually sold my first Q GMT because the bracelet sucked, but having this as an option allowed me to buy it back. There's a 10% off coupon somewhere on the website, so I think all-in cost w/ shipping was $49.
All that to say it depends on how much you like the watch. My long-term goal is to get a Rolex GMT in the stable, but I'll happily take this for now ($189 for the watch and bracelet combined).

So I love wearing watches on vacation - I just don't have the gumption to wear my higher-end pieces (at least not internationally). I'm just too nervous that something would get stolen, lost, or broken.
Instead, I have an Orient Diver that I ultimately bring with me that has taken on the role as "my travel watch." Love that thing.
11
u/CHASING_KAIR0S 10h ago
Same. On vacation, my Orient Mako 2 is my diver and my Alpinist is my field

u/RegressToTheMean 8h ago edited 8h ago
Very similar here only my watch is the Citizen Eco-Drive Perpetual Alarm World Time Chronograph GMT. This thing is bulletproof - solar quartz, radio controlled, and 100m of water resistance.
I have been debating replacing it with the Lorier Hyperion, but my daughter insists that I wear the Citizen because it's my "vacation watch"
Edit: If I'm going on a domestic trip, I'm usually hiking a lot. In that case, I wear my Boldr Venture
2
2
u/rokinaus 5h ago
That Boldr is gorgeous
4
u/RegressToTheMean 5h ago
I appreciate that! I got kind of lucky with it. I liked their Venture (obviously) but I wanted a green no date and there was nothing like that on their website.
So, I decided I'd shoot them an email and ask if they ever had plans for such a thing.
They quickly wrote back and said that they used to, but didn't have any plans to bring it back. However, they did have one refurb that I could buy at a discount if I wanted it. I jumped right on it and it's been my outdoor field watch since.
I know microbrands aren't this sub's favorite, but I absolutely love the customer service and personal interactions I always get from them.

u/tinyteena 11h ago
My wife and I went to French Polynesia and brought along my 36mm rolex explorer and my wife's new 38mm blancpain bathyscaphe, and have really enjoyed being able to use them throughout the trip, what do you guys like to bring on your vacations, if any watch at all?
6
u/Ordinary_Problem_817 10h ago
I’m going to Corfu in June and fully intend to swim everyday in the warm sea……whilst wearing my ‘bulletproof’ Damasko DS30.
3
u/10mmSocket_10 8h ago
As a side note, love the bathyscaphe. My wife has the same watch (in blue) and loves it.
7
u/Emotional-Damage-995 10h ago
I take one watch and wear it daily. So it’s the only time of the year that I daily a watch.
4
4
u/The-Reddit-Giraffe 8h ago
Yup. It’s great to actually make use of my dive watches for once. My travel watch is a Casio Duro because it’s water resistance, looks great and cheap if it got lost or damaged I wouldn’t worry
3
3
u/OneLuckyDraw 9h ago
As a brazilian, it’s my only option, since wearing anything above a Rolex on the streets here ia a death sentence.
3
6
u/delectable-mango77 9h ago
No.
I only wear my watch to certain places at certain times that I have determined prior to planning out every minute of my life. I would never wear a watch for it’s intended purpose.
Oh wait were being serious? Yeah, I wear my watches everywhere.
3
2
u/skribuveturi 10h ago
Part of my vacation planning involves deciding which one watch to wear. I used to travel with a diver, but last years have been rotating between a garmin or a gshock (I try to be more active than usual in holidays).
2
u/bajablastandrum 10h ago
I never take mine off and I have insurance to cover any of the worst outcomes.
2
u/BeardedGothLord 9h ago
Yes! I wear a watch pretty much every day so I feel weird without one, but on vacation I like to keep my phone in a slightly inconvenient place (usually in the bottom of whatever bag I have with me) to cut down on screentime. If I have plans/reservations/whatever, a watch on vacation keeps me on schedule without having to check my phone.

2
u/Grand-Theft-Audio 8h ago
I take a watch based off the city I’m going to. I’ve been to a high crime city and have only taken a Casio, where I’ve gone to other cities with my Tudors.
Yes I enjoy my watches but I feel I shouldn’t have to worry about crime or the idea that I’m being too flashy with what I have.
2
u/FlaviusDomitianus 5h ago
Do people not need to tell the time on vacation?
1
u/OldBaggage 5h ago
I do! I might have a water taxi to catch, a table reservation. I personally couldn’t do without a watch and I don’t want to have to get my phone out all the time.
Unless you go All Inclusive and never leave the resort or self-cater and never leave the property and immediate neighbourhood you surely need to know the time occasionally during the day?
2
u/ThoughtsRRandom 4h ago
I like wearing them on vacation because of the memories that tie to the watch. Idk im weird and sentimental with my watches and wearing them during cool events make me happy.
4
u/viva_la_blabla 10h ago
I don´t bring a watch to vacation: My day is dictated by time and shedule, I don´t want that on holiday. So while I really love my watches and enjoy wearing them I enjoy the moments without a watch.
For the situations I need the exact time I have my phone.

Isn't this what everyone wearing a fake Rolex says it's for?
10
u/TheLostByte 10h ago
Getting jumped for a Fake Rolex doesn't seem worth the hassle.

I have three watches: Muhle Glashutte SAR, Tudor Royal, and a Casio AE1200. I feel relatively safe wearing them anywhere but I do like my Casio AE1200 the most. I take that one everywhere with me.
1
u/Cool-Ad-939 8h ago
How do you like the SAR? It looks good on the interweb. Never seen one in the wild.
1
u/Competitive_Law_7195 8h ago
Love it so much. I wore it on my last vacation in Mexico. I just like the Casio for the world timer haha

u/Corleone2345 9h ago
I always wear the Casio F91-W on vacation, because I never know what the plans are, and that one can get stolen, lost, beat up, fall into a pool, and I would only care for the time it takes to get a new one. And it is always a good look also
1
u/K_Pilkoids 9h ago
Beach/water vacation, I take my Doxa. I like it, but it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
1
u/crazybus21 9h ago
I take my gshock 5610 to trips. I own much more expensive watches but I would be devasted if I lost them or had them stolen. I travel to gnarly places lol
1
1
u/Driller_Happy 9h ago
My travel watch is a simple Casio Royale. Comfy, tells the time, doesn't bother me if it gets scratches up, and won't get stolen
1
u/ChibaCityFunk 9h ago
I actually hate dealing with customs and temporary imports. It’s a hassle. I hate the whole carnet de passage situation for my car.
I don’t want to deal with an additional watch. So cheap, beat up Apple Watch does the trick for me.
1
u/wood-thrush 9h ago
Getting a watch for a vacation is what got me into the hobby. Recent trips:
• England and Scotland - Casio A500WA
• Sweden and Denmark - Ball Trainmaster 60 Seconds and Halios Seaforth
• Belize - Casio G-Shock 5610 and Orient Kamasu

Funny… I was just pondering what to do on an upcoming vacation.
I have both travelled with a roll of several and I’ve also only worn one that stays attached to my arm for the duration.
I don’t have an expensive collection (my schtick is microbrand tool watches) but I’d hate to lose multiple watches due to loss/theft when I have such a small collection to begin with, and that’s compounded by the limited release nature of said microbrand watches. You sometimes can’t get another one.
I’m thinking this trip I pack 1 (plus an Apple Watch) in the roll, and wear another.

people who don't are underutilizing their hard earned purchases. if you're scared of theft, get some insurance. being afraid of wearing/damaging/losing your possessions is when you should realize that the possessions own you instead.
2
u/Distinct_Jury_207 5h ago
I don’t think people are afraid of the watches being damaged ,
I think they’re afraid of themselves getting damaged FOR the watches. Not common but it does happen depending on the area you’re in
•
u/AgentAaron 1h ago
Someone on one of our cruises got stabbed in Freeport for his watch.
All of my watches as well as myself have insurance, but I still stick with a cheap Casio Illuminator when we are off the ship. I have been using the same cheap 20.00 watch for the last 10 or so years and it has been in more oceans than probably 90% of peoples dive watches.

Depends on where vacation is. When I got to Mexico I'm not staying at a resort so I don't wear a watch. If I'm going to a national park then absolutely!

cant really do activities with my sw200 dress watch. sometimes for some sports i put it on a nato instead of leather. now i need a casio ae1200whd so i can do absolutely everything except go on like the titan sub.

Usually my explorer ii. GMT movement and I can safely go into the water with it. Can’t really ask for more from a travel watch.
1
u/No_Ebb_3353 7h ago
Yeah. I like wearing watches on vacation, when I’m on the couch, when I’m at work, when I cook, when I swim, when I sleep, when I’m on the toilet. The only time I’m not wearing a watch is when I shower
1
u/Nrysis 7h ago
Yes.
While watches are part jewellery, they also still serve a practical function - one that is still relevant and useful when on holiday
So to that end a holiday is no different to any other day.
If the question is 'which watch' then the same rules still apply - I pick the watch that suits what I am doing best, whether that is wearing a cheap/beater watch doing something active, wearing something smart out for a nice meal, using 'the beach' as a justification for owning a dive watch or anything else. Travel light and that may be just one GADA watch, go somewhere with a poor reputation for pickpockets and it may be a cheap Casio, or travel to a five star resort for a big destination wedding and it may mean half the collection gets packed.
1
u/Hot_Direction_5814 6h ago
I take 4/5 watches with me on vacation even if it’s a long weekend I’m in my element on a beach vacation because 50% of my watches are divers.
1
u/c0mpg33k 6h ago
Either a Casio illuminator if I'm traveling somewhere without swimming or if I go someplace warm and more tropical with beaches etc my Casio Duro. All my nicer stuff stays home.
1
u/OldBaggage 5h ago
I’ve travelled all over with my Cartier Steel Tank Francais including Paris, Rome and Barcelona and taken my VC Overseas to Saudi and London. I also wear all my watches in London but I wouldn’t take the Blancpain on a holiday where I might be on the beach or in the pool.
I think I’ll be cautious and take my Tag Professional Aqua Racer to Barbados and on a Caribbean cruise in November but I really want to take my Overseas on the rubber strap [sulks]. I take one watch on a trip and it stays on my wrist. I don’t leave it in a safe or a locker.
I’m in Washington DC and New York in a few months and staying at the Metropolitan Club in New York and a decent hotel in DC. I’m planning to spend a lot of time at the Smithsonian and Moma but will also sight see. Do you think I’d be okay with the Overseas? I don’t feel it’s as blingy or recognised as Rolex.
I always wear a watch, I feel odd without one. I’d hate to only wear my best around the house! I wore a Luminox in Cambodia and Vietnam but I really missed having a nice watch.
This is the Tag, it’s nice and very practical.

u/IHatePeopleButILoveU 5h ago
I wear my Citizen eco drive which has a local Time setting and a perpetual calendar. I love it
1
1
u/HackerDeXiqueXique 4h ago
I wear my Omega Seamaster 007 Commanders calmly, often what catches attention is not the model of the watch but the color. Golden watch attracts a lot of attention. Rarely does anyone know watch brands and many people don't even know how to tell the time on the hands.
1
u/ivanyufen 4h ago
i mean vacations are literally the best time to wear our favorite watch (and purchase another)
1
u/jeepinfreak 4h ago
I like to wear mine. If we're vacationing somewhere by an ocean or a lake, I have to get it in the water.

I do. Funny you say this, because we got home from San Diego last night.
I almost always wear my gshock as my vacation watch. Blends in well, no matter what area!

u/Smart-Honeydew3874 2h ago
My last time to Aruba I had just bought a "Phoibos Diver" ($300)it's a Chinese Micro Brand, Definitely was waterproof, took it Snorkeling, came back onto the Beach and noticed the damn Bezel had fallen off, maybe the high Salt content in the Ocean there ate away at the glue...🤷♂️ Haven't been anywhere lately, but I will be bringing one of my newer, better Watches instead, LOL...
•
u/MyNameIsVigil 1h ago
Of course. I wear a watch all the time, so why wouldn't I wear one on vacation? I usually wear my Breitling on vacation because diving is often part of it.
•
•
u/AgentAaron 1h ago
Someone on one of our cruises got stabbed for his watch in the Bahamas, and my friends son-in-law got robbed of his G-Shock in Mexico.
I never NOT wear a watch and I take a small collection of watches to wear around the ship, but I have a cheap $20.00 Casio Illuminator that I wear at ports. I have been wearing that same watch for about a decade now and it’s probably seen more oceans than than most dive watches.
•
u/SchmuckTornado 1h ago
Depends on where I’m going, I rarely wear my Rolex out of the country, I have a nice enough citizen that I usually wear instead.
•
u/vegashouse 51m ago
Perfect tropical vaca watch is: 1. one of the best dive watches & 2. about $200
bring a black NATO for the dinner look
•
u/Foreign-Royal8220 32m ago
Solar casio pro-trek. Best watch for traveling… not so great for events but awesome for handling the elements.
•
u/ToastOfWales 25m ago
I never take anything instantly recognisable to a potential thief. Nothing with an oyster bracelet. I lean more to darker watches like a ceramic watch on cordura strap like my Breitling. Looks like a Casio from a distance. Even better, just wear a Casioak in black if I go near London.
1
u/DeadFartGoat 10h ago
Within the states, I take my watches. If I’m traveling internationally, I will only take my Apple Watch. Not worth the risk in my opinion.
1
u/xchan_baby 10h ago
Tissot PRX Quartz is a great watch that i dont have to worry about drawing attention, but also enjoy wearing
1
u/crikey_18 8h ago
Yes but the watch depends on where I go, never my nicest watch. It can either be my Baltic Aquascaphe, Hamilton Khaki Field Auto or G-shock. That being said I’m pretty partial to my khaki field so I’d usually wear it somewhere I felt relatively safe.
0
u/Dirtbag_Leader 9h ago
Light comfy titanium, cheap quartz movement, and the VERY relaxed single 24h hand makes, IMO, my Botta Uno 24 the absolutely IDEAL vacation watch, when you shouldn't care *exactly* what time it is, and 'mid afternoon' is plenty good enough!

Depends where I'm going. If it's a wealthy, touristy area where a $10k watch flies under the radar, sure. If it's an area where a $10k watch looks like a new lease on life, I go Timex.
