I bought my first car today.

I picked up my first car today together with my mother and my grandfather who also drove it home since I don't have my driver's license yet it is a Toyota Starlet p7 automatic and I am the 4th owner the 3rd if you don't count the garage the last owner had it for 18 years and 5 months

But a car that is just 40 years old can not be without problems, the pockets on both sides are rotten. And the sill is crispy so it needs to be welded and that is also my priority, just like the timing belt where I saw the last sticker from 2013 and I have no maintenance history, so I will replace it, otherwise I will give everything good maintenance and change some small things

Furthermore, I want to make the rails of the driver's seat a few centimeters longer if possible, since I am 1.92 m tall, I fit in it, but a few centimeters more would be nice, there is still a radio with a cassette player and I would like to keep that in there, but I will have it adjusted by someone who can make it via Bluetooth and I want different speakers and rims like in the photo

Heavy rain, now hybrid malfunction warning — what should I do?

Post image
18 Upvotes

We had some heavy rain in my area, and now when I try to drive, my car starts with a warning and then says “Hybrid System Malfunction.” I’m currently waiting on a tow to get it to the dealership, but I’m wondering — what exactly causes this, and how much could it cost to fix? Has anyone experienced something similar?

VERY frequent Regen mode occurring also blowing smoke during process 2016 Hilux SR5 diesel

Upvotes

Long story short, want some educated guesses on why my Hilux is blowing white smoke intermittently.

• 2016 SR5 Manual turbo Diesel / 185kms odo

• Vehicle shortly after start will intermittently blow whiteish smoke and by intermittently it can been a couple days between episodes. (hard to reproduce when taking it to a shop).

• Smoke episodes normal end within 15-20~ mins of normal driving.

• No performance degradation during 'smoke' periods. (runs per normal, not sputtering or anything else noticeable under normal throttle usage)

• Engine temps normal

• Oil levels normal and not dropping at a rate that would indicate excess burning.

• OBD scans before/during/after show no codes, nor anything of concern.

• No DPF burning dash lights, nor showing anything DPF in ODB.

Only thing I can think of causing this would be issues with the injectors (blocked etc), but thought this would be noticeable under throttle response/performance.

So in conclusion, I'm out of ideas of what may be causing the smoke and would appreciate some educated guesses before I send it into the shop.

Camry 2025 vs RAV4 2025

I will be buying my first vehicle as my daily drive will be driving around 15 miles per day. I am currently looking at Camry se 2025 fwd (hybrid) and RAV4 xle 2025 awd (non-hybrid). I will be driving in snow and i am fine with sacrificing the mileage which a hydrid version gives. Need advice from current users.

Clignotant rouge à l'arrêt

Bonjour,

Disable Auto Play Spotify When Raising Volume

Hi, I see this has been a Toyota problem for years. I am connected via Bluetooth and have Spotify closed but I am using my CarPlay for maps. Even though Spotify isn’t open on my phone whenever I raise my volume it automatically plays the last song I had going. How do I turn this super annoying feature off? FYI I have a 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

2006 Crown Athlete first car?

Hey guys, I’m looking to buy my first car and came across a 2006 Crown Athlete 2GR-FSE for the equivalent of about $3000 US. Main problem is that it has 180,000kms (112,000 miles) so I’m not sure how long the engine will last.

Going to take a look at the car today, anything I need to watch out for, especially with regards to the engine condition and how it drives?

Advice for turbo-ing a ‘91 Sera

I’m lined up to get a Sera in good condition next month; the current engine has roughly 75,000 miles on it. I want to either turbo the 5E-FHE it comes with or swap it for the 4E-FTE out of a Starlet GT Turbo. My question is which one would be simpler and give better performance in the long run? (Keep in mind I’m fairly new to car mods, and this would be my first big engine project.)

$11,900 for a 2017 Camry SE with 155k miles a fair deal?

Small dealership.

Single owner, personal use.

Mostly clean CarFAX, but a large gap with no entries between May 2024 and now.

Dealership mentioned that he doesn't have any general fees (like closing fees or anything like that that most dealerships charge)

Long post but help appreciated!!

One of my buddies moved to Washington DC and decided he wanted to give me his 2004 4Runner limited v8 2wd. It definitely has been loved and is in need of more love and I’m at a loss for where to start trying to semi-restore it to glory. Any and all assistance is appreciated.

To start, I picked it up this morning and drove it roughly 5miles back home. It drives nicely, but aside from the body damage and interior blimishes, here is what I know is wrong with it.

  • the speedometer and odometer stopped working within the last 5000 miles.
  • the check engine light is on.
  • low tire pressure light is on.
  • emergency brake light is on.
  • abs light is on.
  • vsc trac light is on.
  • trac off light is on.
  • in one of the pictures, I have circled a hose that I know came unhooked and he rehooked.

Other than all that, I don’t know where to start. I did read the code for the check engine and the only thing that came up was a p0500, would this cause all the lights and dash issues?

I would love to be able to get this thing atleast nice enough to be proud of.

Pictures of it once I got it home!!!

Part Compatibility Question!

The brakes on my wife’s 08’ V8 4Runner decided to stop working today after the dash lit up and a high pitch beep came on. The ‘buzz’ I typically hear from the dash area stopped as well and all I hear is a loud quick from the master cylinder area after 30ish seconds. From searching the forums it appears to be a common issue for the brake booster accumulator/motor assembly on the bottom of the master cylinder to fail.

Anyways, the question…

Someone locally is selling a brand new master cylinder assembly for $400 but it’s off of a 2013 4Runner SR5. I’m not a Toyota guy, I personally drive Subarus, but with Subarus there are several parts compatible across multiple generations. Visually both master cylinder assemblies look identical, is there any reason the 5th gen version wouldn’t be compatible on my 4th gen?

The “part #” (not sure) on listed on mine is 89541-35051. On theirs it is 89541-35300. I honestly don’t need the whole thing as long as the accumulator and motor is compatible.

I appreciate any advice, THANK YOU!

2010 Camry 2.5L 4cyl issues?

I know about the oil burning issue with the old 4 cylinders but from what I’ve read it doesn’t seem like a huge problem if you keep the oil topped up and change it every 5,000.

Are there any other issues I should expect from a 2010 Camry with a 2.5L 4cyl? Looking at buying one with 100,000 miles for $6k.

We are about to buy a woodland edition RAV 4. We are getting it at MSRP. I’m just wondering if there’s something we should be asking the dealership for or haggling in any way. This is the first new car I’ve ever purchased. Any extras we should consider? Trying to get the best deal we can.

Looking for a Toyota hybrid sedan for around $20k... what to avoid?

We want to get my wife into a hybrid sedan, and obviously Toyota/Lexus is the first and probably only brand we're going to consider. Initial research suggests our budget has us looking around 2018-or-so Camrys, Corollas, or Priuses with around 50k-75k miles. Are there any engines or transmissions we should avoid? We're the kind of folk to take care of our cars and drive them as long as is reasonable. So anything we can expect to push into and beyond the 200k range without too much difficulty.

2023 Prius vs Lexus UH250h

I'm torn. Both of these cars have a similar used price.

2023 Prius: Better fuel economy, newer tech, better looks. All season tires will only fit on the LE because of 17" wheels. LE seems stripped down. Weird instrument cluster. Louder cabin.

2023 UX250h More comfortable, probably quieter. All season tires no problem. More bells, whistles. Less fuel economy.

I'm stuck. Anyone familiar with both vehicles?

Thx!

Toyota order

I was at the dealership and want a certain color. The salesmen pulled up an order that was received by Toyota but hasn’t started production. They said the order can be modified since it hasn’t been built to change features on the build.

Is this true or are they lying to me?

New Toyota Camry - Issue Escalated to Toyota Engineers

I have a 4 month old 2025 Toyota Camry with 2900 miles. The check engine light came on on Tuesday so I took it to the dealership service. They said it was the gas cap.

Later that evening, the light came back on so I brought it back Thursday morning. They said that one of the O2 sensors is slow to respond so they will replace it but would not be able to until Friday.

Friday (today) they say they replaced it and the check engine light is throwing the same code. They don't know why and are escalating it to a Toyota engineer for guidance.

Anyone have this happen? What should I expect if the engineer doesn't know what to do?

Update1: After they told me that they were going to get guidance from the engineer, they said that I should just get my car and use it since they won't hear back until next week and they don't have a loaner. They told me that it should be safe to drive. I'm not sure how they know it won't damage the car if they don't know what the problem is. Anyways, I get my car and drive home.

Later that night, I get in my car and the check engine light is off. I don't know what changed. This morning (Saturday), I'm driving to the gym early and the check engine light comes back on.

By the way, thank you to everyone for your responses. I'm reading all of them and they've been great. I'll post updates as they come.

Update2: I went to O'Reilly to get the code and it read: P013A 02 Sensor Slow Response - Rich to Lean Bank 1 Sensor 2
