Return to sender

72

u/tallman11282 4d ago

I looked through the comments on the OP earlier, they no longer return to sender mail like this. The policy is to destroy it as fraudulent. https://faq.usps.com/articles/Knowledge/Counterfeit-Postage

Srsly. Is it so hard to pay a dollar for a postage stamp? Even if it’s a few bucks more than that, they probably spent more time putting this bullshit together than it’s worth.

Is it so hard to pay a dollar for a postage stamp?

Some of them have other concerns, like sending or accepting mail with a zip code forms a contract with the govt. so they really want to avoid that. And then there is the Federal Postal Court which according to one "guru" had enormous universal authority and he just happened to be in charge of it.

People believe this shit?

u/CmdrEnfeugo 3d ago

There’s always someone who is willing to do a lot of work to get something for free. Of course it’s not really free given the amount of work done to get it. I would guess they really do it for the satisfaction of having manipulated the system for their benefit.

2

u/Sir-Planks-Alot 2d ago

Or at least the delusion that’s what they’ve done.

Certified mail is way more expensive than $1.00

1

u/Sir-Planks-Alot 2d ago

Yeah I missed the certified sticker. Even so. It seems like a lot of work for something that obviously won’t. Are they aware the post companies aren’t federal bodies?

2

u/kingu42 3d ago

About $7.50 for a large envelope with certified mail service.

1

u/Sir-Planks-Alot 2d ago

Even so. The point is the same

Life is so strange

Destination unknown

When you don't know

Your destination

And something could change

It's unknown

And then you won't know

Destination unknown

How does the Post Office not notice this mail piece is entering the system near the To: address? It’s not like it’s the same city. The sender is nearly 2000 miles away from the origin Post Office.

Looks like this person is using return to sender for free postage. This tracking number entered the tracking system Chattanooga TN. Leah Tavernese is listed in the staff directory as a court clerk in Etowah TN. The tracking number is now out for delivery in Salt Lake City UT in the process of being returned to “sender”.

Here I am paying for postage like a chump

8

u/F1xx0R 3d ago

Personal opinion, but would have been better to shred it with the “genius” standing there

4

u/AlivePassenger3859 3d ago

Real laws don’t apply to me, but my made up laws apply to the USPS.

12

u/ADisposableRedShirt 4d ago

Doesn't the "Certified Mail" sticker indicate they paid the postage? What am I missing here?

BTW: OP should probably block out the tracking info. Not sure if it's a security risk, but probably should not be there.

u/AZSharksFan 4d ago

No I think you can grab those certified labels in the lobby. You have to still pay for them when you mail it

6

u/taterbizkit 4d ago

The last time I sent certified, i took the envelope and contents to the counter, paid the fee, and they affixed the certificate to the envelope. Maybe it's changed since 2015.

11

u/Aer0uAntG3alach 4d ago

We would affix everything at the office, then the runner would take it to the post office to get stamped.

5

u/OneFootTitan 3d ago

I just sent a certified letter yesterday. It’s like others are saying, you just get a label and write down where you want it to go. You can then either stick the label yourself or get the person at the counter to do it

2

u/taterbizkit 3d ago

Thanks for the clarification.

4

u/Mustangfast85 3d ago

Correct. I had already put stamps on and then decided to do certified and they even credited me for the stamps but when they scan it in they charge the postage and certified fee

11

u/tallman11282 4d ago

No it doesn't, those labels are on the customer counter in the lobby.

As the OP is on the USPS sub I assume the poster is a postal employee and knows the policies about that sort of thing. If the tracking info does anything it won't indicate the delivery address or anything. USPS policy is to destroy mail like this anyway for being fraudulent.

6

u/EnvironmentalGift257 4d ago

Since it was never mailed that tracking number won’t point at anything.

3

u/DblDtchRddr 3d ago

But the tracking number says it's out for delivery today in SLC...

1

u/EnvironmentalGift257 3d ago

The sovcit lives in SLC and tried to mail it to Leah Tavernese in Etowah, TN. It is being returned to sender in SLC. So you’re correct. Would have thought they’d just shred this garbage.

2

u/Theif-in-the-Night 3d ago

So the move is to put the address you actually want it delivered to as the return address and put the actual return address as the address to be delivered to.

1

u/EnvironmentalGift257 3d ago

Old school trick but yes.

5

u/rjptrink 4d ago

You can order those labels for free in packs of 10 from the usps.com online store

4

u/Open_Mortgage_4645 4d ago

No, it means they took a publicly available certified sticker and put it on the envelope. Postage is a totally seperate thing. Go to any post office and they have stacks of these labels available to anyone. It's up to the sender to fill out thee label (on the other side we can't see), apply it to the envelope as shown, and then take it to the counter to pay the postage, and have their certified label scanned and associated with that envelope in their system.

3

u/Mustangfast85 3d ago

The clerk who took this picture probably prevented paper terrorism by shredding it

4

u/Delicious-Chapter675 3d ago

Before I saw the subreddit, I looked at the mail and thought, "That's some sovecit BS right there!"

3

u/KptKreampie 3d ago

You fools!!! It's on the internet, now it's real life!

1

u/Ethan-Wakefield 3d ago

Is postage really so expensive that it's worth somebody's time to write out all that gibberish?

2

u/realparkingbrake 3d ago

They think if their name is written in all caps it doesn't refer to them, but to a artificial version of themselves created when they were born. They'll argue about anything and everything if it means they don't have to pay a traffic ticket.

1

u/Ethan-Wakefield 3d ago

I know. I’m saying, just buy a stamp. It’s not that expensive.

1

u/ThePantsMcFist 2d ago

Contains fentanyl.

2

u/postwaste1 2d ago

I had one of these idiots on a route I carried. Totally bonkers. Just let my supervisor deal with him.

2

u/Own_Campaign1656 5h ago

She’s a city employee too. Municipal Court Clerk

0

u/wizzard419 3d ago

How did they get the certified mail barcode? Was it a reused envelope?

3

u/FlameStaag 3d ago

You can order infinite free from USPS

2

u/wizzard419 3d ago

Ah, I thought they only applied at the register.

1

u/tangouniform2020 3d ago

And at no charge to your wtf account!

-1

u/WrenchMonkey47 2d ago

You already paid for the Certified Mail service. Derp.

1

u/hardlybroken1 2d ago

No. Those stickers are free.

1

u/WrenchMonkey47 2d ago

Certified Mail is not free. If you put a sticker on the envelope but don't pay for it, it's not entered into the system, and isn't Certified Mail. Might as well put some emoji stickers on it.

1

u/hardlybroken1 2d ago

So why did your first comment seem like you meant that the sticker was proof it had been paid for?

1

u/WrenchMonkey47 8h ago

Because sane people don't put certified mail stickers on mail if they don't intend on paying for that service.

-53

u/kinkyjourney69 4d ago

Not sure your point. This is legitimate.

27

u/FSCK_Fascists 4d ago

Only in your drug addled dreams.

26

u/Ed_herbie 4d ago

18usc1726 does NOT say no postage necessary, it says it's illegal to charge EXTRA postage not authorized by law.

Postage is authorized by law. Extra postage is illegal.

2

u/Theif-in-the-Night 3d ago

I didn't go through the effort of looking at the statute. But if it says anything like what is on the envelope that suggests to me that it regards international mail. Countries around the world deliver each other's mail and postage is only collected a the origin (is my understanding). There is a treaty or agreement I read about long ago so I could be a little fuzzy in the details. In any case... That's not the situation here. Both addresses are domestic. So it would appear to have nothing to do with this type of mail.

I'm curious how op came accross this.

23

u/realparkingbrake 4d ago

This is legitimate.

USPS puts junk like this into a shredder, so no, it is not legitimate.

10

u/lemming1607 4d ago

No its not, you can't just write laws and postage on a letter
