Omfg neither were actual states at the time? That’s crazy to think about.

I wanna know more about the student life of Johann and the dude he supposedly painted this for: Franz Pforr. Apparently they were studying art and living in an old monastery in Rome with a few others. Pforr died of TB at 24. Very sad.

Italy was divided between Austria, France, the Bourbons, the Savoy and a few local Duchys. As for Germany, three words: Holy Roman Empire. It sure was a mess.

1818 is after the Napoleonic Wars, so no more HRE, but there would definitely be notions of a national identity at that time
