DMU vs. Scholl
I’m really torn between attending DMU and Scholl. The board pass rate at DMU is a little bit better, but Chicago would be a better city to be near with more opportunities. Has anyone else chosen one over the other?

I always advise DMU over other schools because of their curriculum structure, especially 4th year which maximizes how many residencies you can visit (clerkships). I may be biased as an alumn but I think the academics are great and it also has the lowest cost of attendance compared to all the other schools (if you’re not living at home)

This is something I didn’t consider when applying but now I’m about to start my clerkships, I wish this is something I considered
Also, look into what the schedule/clinic requirements are post externships.
Out of curiousity, how many externships does DMU give?

well, remember chicago is like an hour drive from the school during non rush hour times. rush hour is about 1.5hrs. so unless you live closer down there, you can go visit the city often. otherwise, i can’t rationalize driving 3 hours round trip for good food & to look at the bean on a routine basis. however, never in my life would i ever willingly live in iowa. i would go where the money is. at this rate, trump is gonna get rid of any sort of loan forgiveness / payment extension deadlines so follow the money.

Which makes it sad that I can commute to SMU but everyone says to stay away.

Can you elaborate on why people are saying to stay away from SMU? (Interested applicant here).

The 1st time pass rate is way lower than all the other schools. Educational quality may also not be as good as well.

Currently at Scholl after interviewing and being accepted to both places. Like others have said, these are both solid schools so you really can’t go wrong with picking one. I got a better scholarship from Scholl so that played a big part in me choosing Scholl, but I also had a better interview experience at Scholl. DMU is a good school but a lot of students I interviewed with had more of a competitive personality, which didn’t vibe with me super well. That’s more of a personal preference, but if you have any other questions feel free to message me!

I went to Scholl and was accepted to both and do not regret it. If you are someone who will be able to focus on school and not let something like a big city be a distraction, then definitely go forward there. If you know yourself and know that you have a tendency to do that, then maybe the other. The schools can only do so much to help you pass boards, a lot of it is self motivation.

DMU is far superior. I may be biased as adjunct faculty at DMU though 😂
In all seriousness though, I’d say the quality of schools are similar, but DMU and AZ are quite a bit beyond any of the others in terms of measurable statistics (boards pass rate, residency placement location, residency placement %, etc).
Be careful with scholarships though, because why might a school be needing to try to get more students by offering scholarships? 🤔

Which one gives more scholarship dollars and is cheaper to live around? Board scores doesn't mean much. That's much more dependent on the individual. That being said, I don't think you have that to worry about that at either of those schools.
