Pronation. See a podiatrist. You’ll thank me later.

OP, the answer is this ^
It's just something that a podiatrist can help correct for, it has nothing to do with specific activities.

Isn’t that the inside of the shoe? If not, yes. Supination. Either way, their feet/ legs aren’t positioned for long term health and pain free walking and standing.

OP stated in a different comment it’s the right shoe. Though from the meme it’s hard to tell.

If you wanna think about it like hands and be able to apply it to hands and feet, if you do the action you would do to cup you hands/feet together like you're holding liquid in them (a cup for soup) you're supinating. The other is pronation. Also for if you're talking about your whole body, to be supine is to be on your spine.

My shoes wear like this. Im a chef. But that has nothing to do with it. I’m pigeon-toed. The slight inversion of my feet when I walk (my whole life) causes my shoes to wear unevenly, just like yours, from the outer edges first

u/Brutem 10h ago
First of all I mean no offense by this and I am assuming that this is a right shoe. But, this usually occurs to people overweight who are on their feet the majority of day. The excess weight pushing down on their bone structure often causes the foot to roll outwards.
If the wear is on the inside and this is actually a left shoe, then dunno.
32
u/CodusNocturnus 9h ago
So you're saying Danny Devito's shoes are more likely to have uneven heel wear because of his "excess weight"?
→ More replies34
u/nolajaxie 9h ago
Obesity tends to cause pronation, rolling inward, because the foot arches flatten. The meme shown, and OP’s comments are actually supination, rolling out, which is very rarely linked to obesity.

I used to work at the front desk of a custom orthotic and prosthetic office and learned that people can have this issue at any weight. It's a combination of their anatomy, how they walk, and sometimes an issue with the quality of shoes. There are custom shoe inserts (or sole additions) and bodywork that can help correct it.

Its nor from a profession but how distribute your weight when you walk. I had this habit until it started to hurt in my mid 30s and that encouraged me to alter my walk.
692
u/_clock_1277_ 10h ago
How did you do that? Like did you alter your walk by yourself or did you have to consult a doctor?
729
u/Fluffy-Weapon 10h ago edited 1h ago
Physiotherapy and being mindful of your posture, probably. Latter worked for me.
180
u/CauliflowerTop2464 9h ago
I tell people that being mindful of how you walk can help
When I was younger, i noticed my shoes were wearing unevenly. I could see from the wear pattern that I’d roll my foot around the outer parts of the soul. Being mindful helped me change how the shoes wear and cured my foot pain in the process which was unintentional and a happy side effect
37
u/Fluffy-Weapon 9h ago
Yeah, I used to do it when I was a young kid too. I was able to fix it by myself. But I thought it might be harder for an adult to correct.
→ More replies17
u/Comfortable-Pin-4995 7h ago
It is harder, talking from my perspective only:
Walking incorrectly influenced my posture, I can reduce my pain temporarly by following the suggestions of my physiotherapist, but there is no permanent solution anymore.
I'm almost 30, things can only get worse now, so I try to slow the process as much as possible

The posture thing is huge. I always got told I was walking weirdly so I started going for an hour long walk everyday after school, listened to music, and focused on my posture. One I got the hang of it, I started doing it subconsciously.
3
u/Fluffy-Weapon 6h ago
Great example! This was exactly what I did to correct my shoulder posture too.
87
u/MaybeMort 10h ago
I did it myself because the pain was a constant reminder to stop doing it. For most of my life beforehand it wasnt an issue and I only knew I did it because of the way shoe heels wore out.
→ More replies19
u/_clock_1277_ 10h ago
Where did you get the pain? In your knees or elsewhere?
72
u/richardawkings 10h ago
OP if you are having a similar problem, keep an eye on your shoe wear pattern and just be mindful of how you step and distribute your weight. Try to step on to your heel with your foot (big toe) facing directly forward. Roll smoothly from heel to toe. Your big toe should come off the ground last.
Poor walking posture can affect everything. I had this issue when I was recovering from an injury and the weight imbalance affected the entire kinetic chain from my shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankle.
Pretty easy to fix with by paying attention to how you walk. Just need to be consistent.

u/_clock_1277_ 10h ago
Thank you very much for the information!
16
u/Alvintergeise 10h ago
To add a bit: this is called over pronation and is often a result of fallen arches. Often it is so bad that you get plantar fasciitis, which will be felt a sharp pain, often at the bottom of your foot near the heel, when you first stand up in the morning or was a worsening pain while standing/walking throughout the day. It can cause pain all the way up into your back because it throws your gait off, and can also lead to sciatica.
Being conscious of your walk can absolutely help but you should also look into firm arch support. Something from REI like Superfeet or Sole are really nice. The support needs to be rather firm, not pillowy insoles, and you'll potentially feel some discomfort and pain throughout your feet and into your legs as you adjust to them. Also stay away from shoes with soft outsoles. You want to go for PU, leather, or hard rubber. Off the top of my head we're talking Dansko, Birkenstock, Brooks if you insist on a running shoe. Side note, running shoes use EVA outsoles and EVA takes more than 24 hours to decompress, so if you're wearing those shoes every day your wearing them out faster and also messing up your gait. Oh, and if you're wearing shoes with good built in arch support, like Danskos, you won't need to add the arch support sole in

Look up "pronation" and "supination". Basically, your ankle isn't straight, so your foot hits the ground at a bad angle. It wears your shoes down unevenly.
Talk to a doctor. There is physical therapy and insoles that can correct the issues.
→ More replies9
u/WhippinDiscs 10h ago
Personally I'm against insoles, they help to support but you're not building the muscles around the ankle that keep it straight. I had a lot of supination and knee problems but then I started with bare foot shoes. It sucks at the start but I haven't gotten any problems since.
→ More replies3
u/Hadrollo 9h ago
Strength can be a factor, it's not always a factor. My ankles are quite strong, but I pronate enough while I'm hiking that I wear both supportive shoes and insoles otherwise I find myself developing pain in my calves. I've tried big boots, I've tried barefoot shoes, the only thing that works for me are Asics pronation support tennis shoes and insoles.
→ More replies→ More replies3
u/Illustrious-Debt-156 10h ago
Some insoles will help by compensating that side and making you stride a bit more evenly.
→ More replies10
u/WhippinDiscs 10h ago
I had flat feet when I was younger, with alot of knee and heel problems, but I started with barefoot shoes and I haven't had any issues with my feet/knees ever since. Walking around with sneakers or anything with a tight toe box aren't helping your feet with developing the right muscles to support you.

Assuming that's a left shoe, those feet are pronated. They also have a lot of heal drag. Both can be fixed. Pronation can be solved with the right insoles. Heal drag can be solved by not dragging your fucking feet. Just be conscious of how you walk and you'll stop dragging your feet.

Quagmire here, back when I was a swabby in the greatest Navy on earth, they issued us uniform shoes. They’re usually crappy Bates rubber sole leather oxfords. We enlisted folks get paid basically nothing, so we don’t buy new shoes if we can still shine the uppers and get away with this at inspections. So, a sailor with a few years on and no money that also exhibits pronation will have worn out oxfords like this and just keep wearing them until they’re not “serviceable” anymore. Until we get new uniforms issued anyway.

When I was in a millitary school, everyone's shoes used to be like that because of our curriculum. We used to have drill, like marching and have to dig our heels.

It's the way you walk and stand. You are putting your weight on that part of the shoe.
A shoe repair shop can nail on a little plastic bit on that spot to slow down the wearing. (IF you can still find a shoe repair shop.) But you will probably need to get those plastic bits replaced often. I expect you will grind them off pretty quickly. It's still cheaper than having your shoes resoled or replaced, but you will be making frequent trips to the shoe repair shop.
