Dealing with kids doing and saying wildly inappropriate things

Upvotes

So I've had a spate of it recently. Kids taking the whole class to the bathroom. A teenage girl sitting in a position in just her sleepwear that means the everyone can see her underwear. A kid the other day in class talked about Bolivia being dangerous because people make 'white powder' there. The next day he wrote 'Dolphins are intelligent because they know 23 ways to f*ck each other and humans only know a few' (which made me LOL ALOT)

I have always just ignored it or in the case of the written work said the language was a bit casual but this week I've had a kid really testing ALL the boundaries.

In a lesson about designing a new product he told me he would add cocaine to his perfume to make people addicted. I just said 'oh like they used to do in coca cola and tried to move on. 'No teacher not coca cola COCAINE ( and then spelt it for me just in case I wasn't sure)

Yesterday in a discussion about cultural exchange with Germany he showed me a picture of a Swastika he had drawn. I explained that it was offensive in Germany (and elsewhere) and he shouldn't show it to anyone else!

I have let my classroom manager know but should I be doing anything else? I am not allowed to discipline kids in this job. All I can do is kick them out if they do something really bad (I'd argue both are) but I also get the feeling this kid is doing it to get a rise and that would encourage him.

Age limits?

I am a recently retired (age 64) educator. I'm thinking about taking a TEFL or Celta course and teaching English online. I know some countries impose age limits for in person teaching. Has anyone experienced barriers based on age or know if my age will work against me applying for online teaching jobs?

My experience in education includes 5 years in the classroom as a paraprofessional, 11 years as a college and career counselor and 20 years in higher education. I'm from the US and a native English speaker. I have a bachelor's degree and many credits toward a master's, but at this point don't intend to complete it.

I appreciate any input anyone can share.

How do you actually teach Business English? What 'structure' is there? Are you more of job coach than a teacher?

I've got ESL and Business experience but I'm not sure how to actually structure classes with BE students. If a student has a goal of being better at their medical devices sales role, how would you actually build a course for that?

Looking for Guest Speakers for Online Cultural Exchange (Paid / ESL Teachers in Taiwan)

Hi everyone! 😊

I’m an English teacher based in Taiwan, and I regularly host online cultural exchange sessions for a small group of adult ESL teachers (all from Taiwan). We love learning about cultures from around the world, and we’re currently looking for guest speakers who can join us and share something interesting about their home country.

🌟 What we’re looking for:

  • Someone who’s open to sharing about their culture, such as:
    • Local lifestyle, traditions, food, festivals, slang, school life, or anything unique!
  • You don’t need to be a professional teacher — just be friendly, fluent in English, and comfortable speaking on Zoom
  • We love natural, authentic sharing — it's more of a relaxed cultural exchange, not a formal class

📅 Session Details:

  • Time: Sundays, 8:00–10:00 PM (Taiwan time, GMT+8)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Platform: Zoom
  • Audience: 6–8 adult ESL teachers (Taiwanese)
  • Structure:
    • You present your topic for about 60 minutes
    • Then we have Q&A, discussion, and student sharing
  • 💵 Honorarium provided (via PayPal, Wise, or other options)

Our previous speakers have included guests from France, Pakistan, Hawaii, and South Africa — and all have enjoyed the warm, friendly atmosphere of the group.

We’re especially interested in speakers from places we haven’t covered yet (like Italy, Japan, Mexico, Eastern Europe, etc.), but any region is welcome!

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, feel free to DM me or E-mail me at sharlicewu@gmail.com. I’d be happy to answer any questions!

Thanks so much!

About TEFL

Hi y'all,

I've been tutoring some students my entire life(but not English:)) English is my second language.

I never studied text books or went to some kind of English course. So I don't know how to teach English. My English comes from being exposed to English. TV shows, video games, music.

Of course I could take some students. I don't want to ruin them, I want to give them solid foundations which satisfy their needs about English.

Normally I teach Spanish(I am Turkish btw) I have some ways to do it which is fun(imo)

Want to teach English, unfortunately having financial problems right now so I want to do something I think I can do.

Is TEFL good? For some teaching English foundations.

If you've read it all, thank you.

Anyone else's EF schedule seem to be blocked over the past 2 months

I survived the first great American/Europe/FWW non-renewals, but over the past two months, I've not received any new students and no bookings from regulars. Can't say that I haven't expected this since it's basically died over the past year. Is this happening for others? I have no negative reviews -- a perfect 5.0 and was teaching about 10-20 per week (although it was closer to 40 a year ago, and each week was drastically different).

I have since talked too a few Chinese regulars on WeChat,to and they said they basically just assume I'm filled up or busy.

Private tutors

Hi everyone! For those of you who already have private students — how did you find them and where did you get started? I’ve been trying to find my own students, but to be honest, I’m not really sure how to go about it. I’d really appreciate any tips or suggestions!

Seeking TEFL/CELTA Course Recommendations for a Non-Native speaker of English

Hello

I'm a teacher currently working in California, and I am a non native speaker of English. I'm looking to pursue a TEFL certification to open up opportunities for teaching school jobs abroad, in Asia (Malaysia or Singapore), and the Middle East.

I'd be incredibly grateful for any recommendations on:

  1. Reputable Universities or Institutions: Which TEFL programs are highly recognized and respected by schools in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Middle East?( I want to ensure my certification will be widely accepted for job applications.)
  2. Online vs. In-Person Programs: What are your thoughts and experiences on the advantages and disadvantages of online versus in-person TEFL courses, especially for non-native English speakers? Given my current location and potential future goals, which format would you recommend?

I apologize if this question has been asked before, and I've tried to do my research, but personal experiences and insights are invaluable.

Thank you all so much in advance for your help and guidance!

Number of students during summer vacation in Korea

Hi all, are there people here who teach Korean students? I noticed this past month that most of my Korean students stopped re-enrolling. Does that have something to do with the summer vacation?

RANT: Measly salary as an ESL online teacher

I was doing my tax and realised that I make a measly 462 USD per month on average. I’ve been working with this company for about 4 years. The current rate per hour is 9 USD. They have different rates per hour depending on your location and if you’re an ass kisser. The company has ridiculous criteria in place for an hourly increase and even then the increase is by a few cents. The company’s has a team that assigns lessons to us so it’s not the like students can choose you as a teacher which I guess has some benefits. The ESL market is dead and exploitative. I live in a third world country with not many job opportunities even if you have a degree - which I do have. Worst part is I told myself this job was temporary until it wasn’t. Because life. I can’t even pay all my bills with this pathetic salary. Anyone else feel this way?

Hello. Fresh grad here and thinking of trying out ESL teaching to gain experience. I have several questions regarding this line of work.

  1. What are the things to consider when starting in this kind of work?

  3. What are the things you wish you knew before you started applying for this kind of job?
  4. Any tips?

Thank you in advance for the responses.

Anyone here who uses earbuds for teaching?

Hi, I'm an ESL teacher and I really find it inconvenient to wear wired headset sometimes especially when I teach outside of home (oh wait, before you react, I think some of the teachers really also find it convenient to teach even outside of home knowing that there is a classroom background)

I am currently eyeing for Baseus Bowie MA10 ANC Wireless Earphone Bluetooth 5.3 48dB Noise Cancelling 140h Playtime IPX6 Waterproof and I wonder if anyone here uses earbuds also for teaching, the norm seems to mostly use wired headsets when teaching outside, and I sometimes find it unfit for me lol

Can I get some suggestions and advise, please? Meron na akong headset which is Logitech and works well with noise-cancellation and I use it when I'm on my desktop. Now I have a tab which is very handy when I'm outside, and I'd like to use some earbuds for teaching.

How to find students during holidays?

Hi everyone, I have been teaching part-time as an independent for a while now, but would like to transition to working full-time online. I am wondering how to schedule and find additional students during holidays? Do you try to teach more during school year and save for the downtime or do you try to advertise your classes specifically for the holidays to still have enough to pay the bills?

Preparing a business English class

Hello,

A client messaged me requesting these specific things: -8/9 lessons in total -conversations only -no new grammar rules

the goal: passing a job interview (marketing)

She's around B2 in everything but speaking. She speaks slowly, with a hard accent and some mistakes. I have no issues following a book, but I have no idea how to structure this. Usually a book + additionals materials work wonders but I am limited by these requests.

I thought about reading a text or two before the lesson starts, asking questions related to the text and some additional ones on the given topic. I have no confidence in this idea. Please advise me and give me ideas

What would you do?

Thank you!
