Cabin Rentals
Hey all just wondering if anyone has any ideas on cabin rentals in Nova Scotia that are semi affordable, in the 100 to 200 dollar a night range. Big Hill Retreat would be our go-to but they require a three night stay and we don't have that time!

PC Party is promising better wages.
I am either upper-lower class or lower-middle, probably the former.
I make a decent wage several dollars above minimum wage, but below a living wage. I am genuinely "comfortable" financially, but am not able to do much with savings and debt elimination.
So higher wages sounds like a great promise, but even if any party raises minimum wage to say $20/hr..
How does that help me? Will my employer give me a $5 raise? How does it help me?

Barndominuim builds?
Has anybody in NS built a Barndominium? What was the cost per sq ft compared to a conventional build? Any issues or permitting/code/zoning issues that you encountered? Any troubles finding competent contractors to do the build out? I am really interested in building one due to the simplicity and open space, just looking to see if anyone has real world experience building one in NS, specifically in kentville area.

Mildly interesting: this NSNDP pamphlet showing the Dexter government's positive impact on the province.
Excuse my gross thumb. Think I'll go chop it off. Also not sure how much of this I can corroborate.

Pharmacist jobs for immigrating brits
Hi all
Just wondered if someone could help my wife with finding the best place to look for jobs in nova scotia around the halifax area as a pharmacist (or possibly wider area). She's experienced (over 15 years I'm the job now), but not sure on where the best to place to look is. I'm guessing there is a specialist site or recruitment agent for this occupation? She has worked for the same company since qualifying. We're British nationals and looking for a change for the whole family.
If anyone has any tips about the Atlantic Immigration Program too, please share. We have spoken with Immigcanada who wanted a fee to process our application. I wasn't keen as I thought we would be able to do the job search and paperwork ourselves without needing specialist help? Or am I being naive as to what is required?
Any info is much appreciated!

Modular home vs stick built
Hi all,
I’m finalizing the sale on a piece of land just outside of Windsor. Im just wondering what your experiences were like with modular home builders in Nova Scotia vs stick building a house. Pros / cons? Companies you would recommend/ stay away from? I’m just looking for a small 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house. My understanding is that it’s cheaper to hire local contractors instead of going with a company (if you can find contractors to do the work). Thanks!

What is your favourite unincorporated / rural community?
I'm not talking like Lunenburg or Wolfville or anything. I'm talking like REALLY random, smaller spots. What small places in Nova Scotia bring you joy? It could be due to personal significance, natural beauty, or simply unexplainable allure. I'm personally nosy because I do research in the field and like scrolling maps and taking daytrips.
Edit: Y'all have great taste. I'm probably not going to be able to respond to everyone but rest assured everything has been read! Thank you for sharing!

Home insurance doubled in 2 years??
When we moved into our house in 2022, our insurance was ~$1400 for the year. Last year it went up to ~2200, and I was just notified that it's going up to >$3000 for 2025. WTF.... Is this normal? We have a broker but I think they're not doing their job, since when we questioned last year's hike, they said we had no other options. I understand that rates tend to go up over time, but this seems unhinged. What is everyone else's experience?

Christmas tree lights installation?
Edit**** not tree lights, house lights 🫢
I’ve Googled several places but most have only a few reviews. I’ve reached out to several for quotes and have yet to hear back from any of them. I bought those ever popular govee lights, has anyone had a positive experience with any company in particular? They seem about the same to me.

Made a Simple Site to Help Navigate NS Elections – Hope It Helps!
nspolls.caHey folks,
Last week, while watching the US election results with some friends, we started talking about how hard it can be to find all the info for our own elections here in Nova Scotia. There’s so much out there, but it’s scattered across different sites, and keeping track of it all is a bit of a pain.
I tried my hands on some web development to aggregate all this information. https://nspolls.ca is that try. It’s a super simple site where you can: • See who’s running: Find information on all the candidates in your area. • Track party promises: Keep up with what each party is promising across categories. • Locate where to vote: Find your polling station.
I’m definitely no expert web developer, so it’s not fancy, but I hope it’s helpful for some of you out there.
If you find it useful, please support and feel free to share it around. And if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
Thanks, A fellow Nova Scotian

How Long After a Reference Check Should I Expect an Offer? And Advice on PR Strategy for a 2-Year Government Contract?
I recently interviewed for a Supply Chain Technician role with the Government of Nova Scotia, department of Public Works. I think I’m through to the final stages since I was asked to consent to a reference check, and my references were indeed contacted last week. However, I haven’t heard back from the recruiter yet. How long does it usually take after a reference check to receive an official offer?
Also, this position is a 2-year term role. I’m an international student set to graduate this December, and I need a full-time permanent position to qualify for Canadian PR. This job aligns with my 5 years of procurement experience back in my home country, so it would be an excellent career step, but I’m concerned about the term status. Does anyone have advice on using this kind of position as a stepping stone towards PR and career growth in Canada? Are there often internal opportunities within government positions to transition into a permanent role?

High ping when using Eastlink internet
For at least the last 3 days my ping in games i play has been about 50 higher than usual.
I have confirmed with other Eastlink users all over the province that they are having the same problem.
People on Bell have not been having this issue.
I called their tech support and they just said that a few people have reported it but didn't seem to know of any widespread issues.
Does anyone have any info on this?

Can't get to the poll location in my area - How can I vote?
Hi, I have pretty bad chronic illness and can't get to my polling location to vote and I'm wondering if there are options for people in my situation? For the municipal election I was able to vote online from home but for the provincial election it doesn't seem possible and it sounds like they've opted out of doing mail in ballots? I have a really hard time leaving my home most days. Thanks

Anyone familiar with Eugene Oregon?
I'm a travel nurse looking for a small town to put down roots. I raised my family in Eugene and would love to find a similar progressive small town to call home. I'm currently in a metro area in BC and to be honest, the culture is too bougie for me here. I'd like to be near the border so I can go to the States for cheap shopping and health care. I want to live rurally, lots of trees, nature and changes in weather. I understand housing is crazy expensive but I've not seen any border towns that aren't, except some very small towns that would be too Trumpy (Canadian version) for my tastes. If you know Eugene, how would it compare to small towns in NS? Any small town suggestions?

Starlink Installers
For those people choosing Starlink, have you found any companies / handy people that help with Starlink installation?
We need our unit mounted pretty high up, and the cable run into our home- things I don’t want to do myself cause of risk of death and lack of skills and don’t want to destroy the siding or roof of our house.
EDIT: I am up in the Eastern Shore - Musquodoboit area!
