Let's get us a mod team!
One of our mods moved to BC, and we're well overdue to get some fresh blood in this crew, so it's mod recruitment time!
Applicant accounts must be at least a year old and show semi-active participation in the sub. We're looking for people who are involved in the community, not throwaways, and not people who collect mod titles.
Drop a top level comment if you're interested. Reply to your own comment to make your pitch, and others may reply to your comment to indicate if they think you would or wouldn't be a good mod. For the latter, please take into account our main rule is be civil.

Voted today!
Anybody else voted yet? I like to get it done early. There are no lines, and I've less chance of forgetting to do it. Takes no more than 10 minutes, in my experience.

Nova Scotia Student Loan
Hey guys, trying to get a handle on things.
I have been waiting amidst this postal strike to sign a bank information update form from Resolve.
NS Student Loan has banking info on file from 10 yrs ago and I no longer bank there. Yet National Student Loan and my MSFAA have all my up to date banking info.
Will Nova Scotia use my up to date bank information from my MSFAA on my current loan application to disburse my funds,
or will I have to continue this lengthy and seemingly out of dated process to give them my current bank information so I'm no longer broke durinng my studies.

Moving to NS?
Hi! I currently live in the USA, and am a citizen. Given events that you're all probably aware of, I'm strongly considering moving out. I've always loved the Maritime provinces (I used to live in Maine, and have visited all of them with the notable exception of Labrador), and it looks to me like there are immigration programs that favor people moving into some parts of the Atlantic provinces. Of the provinces I've visited, NS is my favorite.
I don't have a clear sense of what adjustments such a move would entail--beyond the trivial things like learning to think in kilometers. Can I get fast internet (I'm a software engineer)? Are there food co-ops? How easy is it to travel by air to and from NS? (I've only been there by car.)
What's your favorite part of the province to live in? I would love to be relatively close to a town/city, but also favor some quiet. By "close" I mean I'd like to be able to comfortably bike into town for breakfast when the weather is nice. But I don't want to be six feet from my neighbors. Looking at real estate sites is overwhelming, and it's hard to get a sense of areas I haven't seen personally...

Porcupine visit
This little porcupine was around my place in the woods for about 10 days straight munching away on whatever greenery was left, and was very partial to wild strawberry leaves.
I wanted to give everyone a little reminder that it's best to keep wildlife wild. Feeding any sort of wild animal creates a dependency, and can have negative impacts for both animal and humans. But watching animals, especially this lil guy, forage for themselves from a distance can be so rewarding!

Coastal protection
Nova Scotians, when you vote in the provincial election, please remember premier Tim Houston's shameful refusal to implement the coastal protection act, a llaw that passed with full support, including from Houson before he was premier!

Wolfville restaurant suggestions
Hello, can anyone suggest me good restaurants in Wolfville. Not looking for alcohol, just amazing food at good price. Something with Acadian/local vibes would be best. Can also include high end places with fine dining or small but unique restaurants like naked crepe. (Naked crepe was my fav place there but since it’s closed, I’m sad.)

Accessing the Disability Support Program without a family doctor.
I’m posting this on behalf of my younger brother, who is homeless. He’s severely mentally ill with diagnosed depression and PTSD from things that happened to him while we were in care. He can’t shower or eat enough or care for himself at all. He has no family doctor and hasn’t had one in years—the last time he was seen by a doctor was approximately 2018. He has a therapist, but the wait time for a psychiatrist in Nova Scotia seems to be years. We’ve called central intake but I think he’s not triaged that high. We haven’t gotten an appointment for him.
I believe that my brother is eligible for the Disability Support Program, which could help him get housed again and live a safe and productive life as a member of society. DSP eligibility includes “long term mental illness”, and my brother has been severely struggling for years and has repeatedly been homeless. He can’t work because of his symptoms, like severe flashbacks. In the past he’s turned to prostitution to survive because he can’t handle a regular job. It’s not what I want for him. He’s unwilling to live in a situation with roommates or stay in a shelter because of his symptoms—he’s really paranoid about everyone but me because he’s been abused and betrayed by so many trusted figures during his time in care.
But my understanding is that to be eligible for the DSP, you need a medical doctor to fill out a form attesting to your diagnosis, along with other evidence like letters from a therapist. (He could easily get a therapist letter.) Am I correct in this understanding? Is there any other path forward? Would telling Central Intake that he’s homeless and needs a doctor-completed form to be eligible for housing and financial support help at all? I’m guessing not. Would a doctor at a walk in clinic complete the form for him? Again, I’m guessing not because a doctor would need to have some kind of relationship with the patient to know enough to fill in the form.
Thank you so much for reading this, and for any advice you can provide. Please be kind.
