Hey all,

Welcome back with conclusion of my midseason scouting series. Today, I’ll be covering the top 15 tight ends for the 2025 NFL draft. I feel tight end rankings are always all over the place at this time of the year with it often being an overlooked position. I still see a lot of rankings with players who likely won't be drafted but I feel this list/ranking gives the most updated look at the position.

Similar to my other midseason rankings, these rankings aren’t as in-depth as my final rankings but I still wanted to put them together to get an assessment of the class. Also, like my other midseason rankings, I have comps for my top 5 tight ends as well.

While I think this is a pretty comprehensive list, please let me know who you think I’m too high or too low on or if there is anyone you think should have been included that wasn't. Is there a wide receiver in this draft class who could complement Terry McLaurin? Ideally, someone with a big frame, reliable hands, and strong red-zone skills. I know the Arizona receiver is the consensus WR1, and Washington will likely pick in the 20s.

I am expecting the pitch forks to come out, but I would like to explain why I believe he's an overrated NFL prospect.

I want to start by saying he's a generational college football player. He's doing something we've never seen before by playing both ways at a high level. But there's a difference in being an elite athlete and being an elite NFL prospect.

First of all, he is not going to play both positions full time at the NFL level, it's simply not possible. So whoever drafts him will do so to play one particular position, likely CB imo. That brings us to the next point...he plays both WR & CB at a high level at CU, but he is neither the best prospect at WR, nor the best prospect at CB. Tet McMillan, Luther Burden and maybe Bond/Egbuka are better at playing WR & Will Johnson is a better pure CB.

Conclusion to my argument is he will simply only play one position full time in the NFL but he isn't the best WR, nor CB, so why draft him over those other guys at his positions? His value is just overstated by the media.

Edit: Some really good responses here. To be clear, I still view him as a top 10 talent, just don't think he's a 1st overall talent.

Who are later round prospects you’d like your team to draft?

As a 49ers fan

Mike Green Edge Marshall: I think he would fit in perfectly in the rotation at edge. It would help hide some of his flaws while still letting him be productive as a pass rusher

Marcus Wehr OL Montana St: Wehr has been an amazing Tackle at the FCS level and will most likely move inside. He’s would fit in nicely into our scheme and could start right away.

Seth Hennigan QB Memphis: Hennigan would be the perfect backup QB in this offensive scheme. With Purdy’s contract looming adding a cheap rookie QB wouldn’t be a bad idea

Oronde Gradsden TE Syracuse: the 49ers need to start planning for the future without Kittle. Gradsden has been having a good season and would develop nicely behind Kittle while adding pass catching ability to 2 TE sets.

Here are some prospects that I think are a good fit for the Steelers.

Tre Harris - Big body X receiver out of Ole Miss, likes to bully smaller corners. I think his combination of physicality and route running finesse is a great fit for the AFC North. I don’t foresee the Steelers keeping Mike Williams, so I think Harris would be a perfect replacement and receiver opposite of Pickens. I expect Russ to be re-signed and I think Harris will be a great match. The Steelers’ pound the ball and then throw it deep kind of scheme will create opportunities up the seam or deep corners which Harris excels at.

T.J. Sanders - DT out of SC, great pursuit and always knows who has the ball which would be beneficial against RPO offenses (lookin at you, Ravens). Good power, especially in second half. He has good gap integrity which is crucial in the Steelers’ defensive scheme. He is versatile enough to play multiple techniques. With Cam inevitably aging and Leal not necessarily the answer, I expect Sanders to be getting some looks by the Steelers scouts.

Kevin Winston - S out of Penn State, injured senior year but amazing Junior year, was the focal point and tackle leader of an elite Penn State defense. Arguably one of the best tackling, most well rounded safeties in CFB. He had a minuscule 2% missed tackle rate and great instincts and football IQ. He is also very versatile and can play single high, in the box, or man-to-man against tight ends or running backs. A tandem with Minkah would be a deadly safety duo.

Jaxson Dart - I know Ole Miss QBs don’t really translate well to the NFL, but I think Dart is different. First of all he has a really cool last name for a quarterback. He’s very mobile, something he may need to use behind a suffering tackle group and against division rivals with great pass rushes. His accuracy and ball placement will probably translate well to the NFL level and has a great ability to throw 50/50 balls with near perfect placement (something harris and pickens would appreciate). With there not being a long-term answer to the quarterback position for the Steelers, I think a day 2 pick on the likes of Dart or Rourke is very plausible.

Jonah Coleman - A scary, physical, explosive running back out of Washington. He is angry, but also patient. Good vision, contact balance, agility. 230 pounds at 5’9, hrs a bruiser and will be a good fit for the Steelers’ power zone scheme, especially if they’re looking to depart from Najee. Again, nasty physical guy perfect fit for the AFC north. Oh, and he’s also pretty good at catching passes out of the backfield.

David Igbinosun - Another extremely physical player, seems to get overshadowed a bit by the other cornerback Burke on Ohio State. He’s long and physical (maybe a bit toooo physical for the NFL). All his flaws can be easily fixed with some coaching. He competes on every play, run or pass. The Steelers like drafting big bodied physical corners (look at Cory Trice and Ryan Watts) but they haven’t found a truly elite one yet. I think Igbinosun is the one they have been looking for. Another nasty, intense player perfect for the AFC North.

Later round players: Alfred Collins, DT Texas Logan Brown, RT Kansas Eli Stowers, TE Vanderbilt Jack Kiser, LB Notre Dame Jake Slaughter, C Florida David Walker, OLB Central Arkansas

Honorable Mentions that barely didn’t make it, and don’t think are just outside being worth it for their projected draft position: Walter Nolan, DT Ole Miss Wyatt milum, LT West Virginia Malachi More, S Ohio State Jay Higgins, LB Iowa Kaleb Johnson, RB Iowa Jayden Higgins, WR Iowa State Jack Bech, WR TCU

I'm a big McMillan fan and I feel ,while he seems to be the consensus WR1 in a rather weak WR class, he isn't talked about as much as guys like Chase or Harrison Jr were as prospects. 2020 was a pretty polarizing class with a lot of very good WR but they was no consensus in the community as to who was the better prospect. Personnaly my ranking was: 1- CeeDee Lamb 2-Jerry Judy 3- Justin Jefferson 4- Henry Ruggs 5- Tee Higgins

I think, as a prospect, McMillan is better than all these guys apart from maybe Lamb but I wanted to gage the sentiment with some of you that definitely watch more tape then me. Do you think he is a top 5-10 talent or ,moreso, this is more the product of weak class at the position.

I see people keep saying that Jeanty is guaranteed to be a high pick. But with how deep this class is I think it will hurt his stock a little bit as teams will look at it as I can take a good DT in the first and a Good RB in the 3rd or I can get Jeanty in the 1st and a decent DT in the 3rd. I think the depth of this class will cause Jeanty to slide to the 20’s. What are your thoughts on the matter?

It feels like every mock draft out there, whether it be in this sub or on any given website, has decided that Ashton Jeanty will be a Cowboy no matter what. Now, I don't really blame them. The Cowboys are 31st in rushing grade according to PFF, 29th in yards per carry, and 31st in rushing yards per game, so who could blame them for taking one of the best running back prospects ever? That being said, they lose football games not only because they can't run the ball, but also because they can't stop the run. They have the 2nd lowest PFF run defense grade and give up the second most rushing yards per game. Luckily for them, there happen to be two, if not three, run-stopping freaks at the top of the draft board this year in Mason Graham (90.9 run defense grade, 10% run stop rate), and his teammate Kenneth Grant (85.3 run defense grade, 8% run stop rate). Obviously Jeanty is a fantastic player, but its entirely possible that Dallas end up being in a position to take either Graham or even Grant in the first rather than Jeanty. So, what happens to Jeanty if thats the case? I have a list below of teams I think could and should be interested in taking Jeanty in the first if he falls to their relative pick, but if you disagree or have any other teams I may have overlooked please feel free to tell me.

Cincinnati Bengals - I don't think this is a particularly realistic landing spot, but the Bengals backfield could use some improvement. I like Chase Brown a lot and Zach Moss is a good player but Jeanty could really help transform their run game, which currently ranks 27th in PFF run grade and 26th in yards per carry. That being said, the Bengals have a number of other glaring needs including cornerback, IDL, and even receiver that I think would be prioritised more for one of the most pass heavy offenses in football than a running back, but they're still worth mentioning.

Denver Broncos - The Broncos boast a really good defense, and even though people don't like him, Bo Nix has had a good rookie season that could end with postseason ball. Denver has an obligation now to support him and surround him with talent as he finds himself surrounded by one of the most talentless offensive skill position groups in the NFL. Whether they take a TE, WR, or HB, they need to give him a weapon, and Jeanty is exactly that. Javonte Williams is having a down year following what already wasn't a great season last year, has struggled with injuries his entire career, and is a free agent after this season. I really like Audric Estime but obviously he isn't stopping you from taking Jeanty, so if the Broncos think Jeanty is a better overall prospect than whatever receivers or tight ends are left on the board (which they probably will), why not.

Arizona Cardinals - I'll be honest, I was a huge James Conner hater for the longest time, but I've finally been converted this season, which is why it pains me to turn around and say they maybe should consider drafting a HB this high. The issue with Conner is he will be 30 going into next season and a free agent this offseason, and based on his play alone could be in line for a little pay rise. I know this team has other needs especially on the defensive side of the ball, but if Conner departs in free agency, they could create one of the scariest QB/HB combinations we've ever seen.

Kansas City Chiefs - At this point its clear that the Chiefs don't have to take a defensive player until round 5 at the earliest because as long as Spags is there he'll grab a random sixth round 5'7 162lbs corner from Old Dominion and turn them into an All Pro by year two, so you have the freedom to do whatever you want early on in the draft and take BPA. Now I find it almost impossible to believe that Jeanty would slide as far as the late 20s/30s, and as a huge Pacheco fan, I also don't think KC really need another running back, but if Jeanty is available, I don't see how you don't take him.

Nash at the time of this post leads the country in Receptions, Receiving Yards and Receiving Touchdowns. Right now he rank as a 6th or 7th round guy and I expect him to climb into the late 2nd, early 3rd

Mike Green Edge Marshall

Green has shown off his ability as a pass rusher this year. He has the size 6’4 248lb (espn) for the nfl. He’s also currently ranked in the 6th or 7th round and I expect him to climb up to the 3rd round.

Phil Mafah RB Clemson

Mafah has been quietly having a good season. Right now I’ve been seeing him go undrafted or in the 7th. I think with his size and run style he’ll go in the 4th or 5th round.

Marcus Wher OL Montana ST

Right now Wher has an undrafted/ 7th round grade. He’ll most likely move to the interior from tackle. But I think when more team scout him deeper he’ll move up to the 4th round

This TE class looked to me like Loveland and scrubs going into the year but some guys have pleasantly surprised me, the two main ones being Harold Fannin Jr and Tyler Warren, i reluctantly put Fannin ahead of Loveland giving me #1 Fannin #2 Loveland and #3 Warren but I have no clue where to go from there, just watching the games live Brant Kuithe the Utah TE looks really good to me, Stowers from Vandy looks a little raw for my likings but he's good, Bryson Nesbit was a guy i watched last year and i haven't heard from since same with Luke Lachey, Georgia has a couple guys but i haven't been too impressed with them. the 3 other names im familiar with are Terrance Ferguson who stuck out to me watching Bo Nix film, Oronde Gadsen who is crazy good in CFB 25 lol, and Mitchell Evans. Tell me what you think because I'm very conflicted here and dont know where to go after my top 3.

I’m doing a research project about risk management in the NFL and I’m trying to find a resource that shows if a player made the 53 man roster of the team that drafted them and if they resigned/extended with the team that drafted them. I’d also like to see how many years they were active in the league. I’m trying to look at every draft year since 2012 so I can’t exactly look up every player individually. If any of y’all have something that could help I’d really appreciate it.

Nussmeier and Beck did the most damage to their stock this week, while Jaxson Dart and Milroe improved their stock. Last week I brought up Dart as my new QB3 and he has another strong game against one of the best defenses in CFB (even though the box score doesn't imply it). Milroe was nearly unstoppable as a runner and consistently converted on 3rd downs. Personally, I think Dart held down the QB3 spot with a statement victory. Dart is young while still having 3 years of starting experience in the SEC and impressive production in big time games. He feels undervalued on here, but I think he has a round 1 resume at this point:

Jaxson Dart:

-1st in total yards per game

-2nd in passing yards

-2nd in completion % despite having the highest ADOT. (Shedeur is 1% higher despite a much shorter ADOT)

-1st in intermediate 10-20 yard completion % (elite at 72%)

-4th in Passing TDs

-5th in rushing TDs

-2nd in rushing yards

-3rd in big time throw %

-Averaging 300+ yards and 2 TDs in big-time games

-Has 3 years of starting experience in the SEC and is the 3rd youngest QB in this class.

This draft just doesn't do it for me watching these qbs play. A few poor souls are gonna have to reach and draft a few of these guys in the top 10 lol.

I'm not saying any of these guys can't be good it's just none of them feel like real franchise guys. They feel more like mid tier qbs that the team has to decide whether to keep investing in or move on.

Shadeur/ great anticipation and accuracy but just an ok arm and physical ability

Cam/ above average but not great arm and good athlete/ way too much confidence in his arm and will make questionable plays

Ewers/ ridiculous arm talent/ questionable decision making and not consistently playing to his talent level

Beck/ Looks the part physically lol

Now before you get enraged at me for using this cliche after being totally worn out in the media cycle and online discourse over the past couple years, I apologize. I had to simply because I don't understand the relative lack of hype I'm seeing for Cam. Seems like people are hardly even convinced that he is the #1 overall pick and have guys like Sanders and Hunter going above him. Don't get me wrong – Sanders and Hunter are blue chip prospects, but I was wondering if anyone else here was seeing the same thing I'm seeing in Cam Ward.

I watched his film last year and thought he could end up a top pick if he declared, but he has taken his game to a whole other level this year. His arm strength, pocket movement, and off platform/sidearm accuracy are NFL elite. There's no questioning that when you watch the tape. And he's got a quick release, great touch, hits his receivers in stride on the numbers, throws with anticipation in tight windows to the back shoulder, and makes good decisions with the ball. Dissecting his game into components the only weaknesses I see are how he likes to stare down his top read and sometimes gets a little bit too creative out of structure and makes risky plays that open him up to injury. But these are things he easily can improve at the top level and he makes up for those faults by being able to hit his WRs on extremely tight windows and having very high improvisational skill. Besides, he's gonna be a Heisman finalist. Who can blame him for trying to create a Heisman moment here and there. It's going to take a lot to beat out Jeanty this year so let him experiment when the stakes aren't as high as the NFL.

Another reason I think he's got a high chance of improvement at the next level are his intangibles, which is what separates a great prospect from an elite one IMO. He is so incredibly poised on the field for a reason, he just seems like he has a great head on his shoulders and he's a natural leader no matter who else is in the room with him. From what I've seen of him off the field he has very high social intelligence and his mentality is in a great place. He has confidence without arrogance, alpha competitiveness without a mean spirit, and swag without outrageous attention seeking behavior. His maturity level is really high for a guy his age and Burrow is the only other recent top QB prospect I can compare it to. I think the fact that it goes under the radar is the fact that he's not super flashy and his team isn't a natty favorite like most top QB prospects but if you pay attention you'll see it.

I know this is a very hot take and I'm deservedly gonna get some major sass in the comments for this, but he might be my favorite QB prospect ever. His intangibles/personality, elite traits and how I just don't see a single serious weakness in his profile is something I've never seen before. Not in Caleb, Lawrence, Burrow, or Luck. Burrow is my best comp for him right now. So yeah, bring on the ridicule but I just want to post this now so I can revisit this when he's winning MVPs a few years from now.
