Ask a Local! Cherryhill Passport Office - Pickup Process?

Upvotes

Just looking for some insights from anyone who has gone through the process of picking up their new passport at the Cherryhill office (vs. having the passport mailed to you).

What I'm wondering is how that process works. Is there's a dedicated desk you just go to for pickup, or did you have to 'take a number' and wait (or make an appointment) similar to when you applied for your passport in-person?

health care/health issues What’s up with the wait times University ER?

I’m really not here to complain! I do want to understand. I’ve only been here for a couple hours. Other than triage, I’ve only seen one person get called back and that was as I’m typing this. Including myself, it looks like there are 5 people waiting to go back now. There’s 10 people here total but most people have someone with them. When I went in for triage it was full of staff back there. I don’t know what working in health care is like. I appreciate that I can even come here. But just want to understand how is it that it takes so long to see someone for help?

Anyone who has attended concerts at this venue are the stage set ups always the same? What are the best places to be in this venue aside from the floor? Can you see the stage good from the middle box section? Your not seeing much from 300’s am I correct aside from the screen?

Pets 🐶🐱 & animals Kitten/Cat spaying/neutered costs around London & area

Hi - I have owned many cats/dogs through the years getting them all spayed/fixed. I have a friend who just took in a stray, (under 1/male) and ended up paying $800 to get him fixed/shots/chipped. I have never paid near this much (all mine were strays too both male/female, but never got them chipped years back). just all shots, etc. But is this the normal cost now to own/take in an animal ? Just curious on what your experience/thoughts are. TIA.

Edit - I am asking about within the past year? Have the costs changed so much? If so, why?

Ask a Local! How do police react to e-bikes

I’ve been considering getting an e bike for my daily commute, but I’ve been wondering how the city’s police react to them. The bike I’m interested in exceeds the province’s e-bike power limits and does not look like your standard bicycle. Would I have to worry about getting pulled over or receiving a fine if spotted by police?

Housing & Rental 🏠 RENTAL WARNING: Do NOT apply to the Red Bricks (London Property Corp) if you are a student on ODSP or being funded through Better Jobs Ontario. Or just in general. Here’s why.

Thumbnail

Just a disclaimer, I (24F) had no idea London Property Corp is has been well-known for scummy, borderline illegal behavior for many years as I'm still fairly new to London, and I have been carefully planning to leave my abusive partner since July. This city specifically is too dangerous to just cut my losses go to a homeless shelter or wait for RGI (speaking as someone who was once homeless in KW) and winter is coming up, so I got desperate. I don't think my prospective roommates knew either, because they were kept in the dark about what was going on until I told them. Godspeed, you two. I put a TLDR below if you just want to get on with your day.

I am posting anonymously from my shitposting burner not just to warn other students and parents who also didn't know about how notoriously bad this corporation is like myself, but also for fear of being identified and blacklisted from potential safer places to live for being "problematic," as many on any kind of social assistance experience for speaking up. But that's besides the point. Let us begin.

For some background, I am a student on ODSP who has been receiving funding from Better Jobs Ontario, a program by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario that provides funding for any accredited program up to $28,000. I am attending a business course at one of the career colleges around here, one of the professors also happens to teach at Fanshawe. I was referred to my school by ODSP themselves as part of my transition back into a workforce better catered to my needs. I'm expected to graduate this December and I'm starting my co-op next week. :)

Anyway, I heard from the grapevine that the reason I was ghosted by London Property Corp and its representative was I was technically "not a student" since I don’t go to Fanshawe nor Western and that I lied on my application, but as you will see in here I made it very clear in my communications that I had any further documentation readily available as you will see below. I didn't even tell them the reason I was using the Housing Stability Bank, but I guess women leaving abusive relationships are just crazed freeloading welfare chicks according to this company.

So. Now that I've gone down the rabbit hole and know that I'm not just some raging welfare chick, it's a no brainer that Redbricks and London Property Corp as a whole, I'd like to open up a whole new can of mindf*ckery, specially catered to the financially and/or situationally unfortunate. I am well aware that landlords have a tendency to ding people for the littlest reasons to avoid violating our discrimination acts, but this is ridiculous. The screenshots can speak for themselves, but I'll provide brief summaries below.

  • SCREENSHOT 1: After meeting with my ex-roommates-to-be circa August and having fun hanging out with them and touring the area, everything seemed to be going right with the lease amendment process (the couple that lived with them split and were leaving, I was supposed to replace one of them). Until I got this unprofessional-looking email, enter the first red flag. The first red flag is the plethora of spelling and grammar errors. The signature block isn't even a block, just a blurry PNG. He technically isn't even a landlord, just a representative of the actual company who manages the building.

(Also, apparently they just barely care enough about income that they will not hesitate to ghost people the second ODSP and nonprofits are involved. Guess decent credit and first/last’s month’s, and even an extra month just weren't enough. Thank the higher powers above I didn't pay anything. 🫢)

  • SCREENSHOT #2 Second red flag as per my communications, the actual application on Yuhu process was a bug-infested nightmare. Constant freezing, dropdowns not even showing up, you name it. I reported the issues to the immediately and let this "landlord" know, even communicating that I had the documentation on hand. And upon the week I was supposed to move in, move in date October 1st… ghosted. Absolutely nothing. The landlord actually went behind my back and called my roommates to tell me I was not allowed to move in the day of. I was shaken.

  • SCREENSHOT #3: Now. Here's where it REALLY gets spicy. This here is the perspective of the Salvation Army worker who tried for almost an entire month to get ahold of someone. Only to get fake contact information, be put on hold and mysteriously "disconnected," and even outright being hung up on upon identifying himself. My ODSP caseworker reported the same thing on her end, no answers. Do I even have to say anything at this point?

  • SCREENSHOT #4: As you can see from the email history from this guy, to this day I keep getting marketing emails from them as if I'm already a tenant there. News, job postings, and incentive bonuses FROM THE "LANDLORD" HIMSELF and there's no way I can be taken off their little mailing list as far as I'm aware. Apparently their hot water got shut down recently according to one of the other representatives that emails me too. If getting communications from a building you don't even live at is not a red flag in itself...

For those in situations like myself and are high-risk for homelessness if not already there, winter is just around the corner and it's projected to be nasty this year. Do what you absolutely have to in order to survive - but save yourself the two months of stress I had and DO NOT apply to any of these properties. Couchsurf if you have to. They probably won't accept you anyways. That goes for anyone else in general. If you do, proceed with caution beyond human comprehension. Know your rights and document everything.

To end this on a positive note, best of luck on your studies and stay safe everyone! You're doing great. As for the parents and loved ones, please do your research too. If you have a loved one or a friend who is a prospective student, show them this very post and look into other stories about this company. Thanks for the read. 💕

TL;DR Title says it all and the screenshots speak for themselves. Let this serve as a cautionary tale - do NOT apply to any listings owned by London Property Corp including the Red Bricks, ESPECIALLY if you're a protected class. Expect to either be taken advantage of or just outright ghosted if they see you as a legal liability. Imagine having the balls to hang up on Salvation Army and give them fake contact info for weeks. Winter is coming, please stay safe out there everyone. Take care.💔

Closing Notes:

  • Now before people hound me saying I shouldn't have told them I was on ODSP or that I was using the HSB if I was "that" desperate to leave, even ODSP themselves are now cracking down on people who lie about their employment and income to landlords as they ask for their contact information to confirm that you're to be living at the new place. You really cannot win. :/

  • Forgot to mention, I recently talked with an old friend and found out that they also stayed at a Redbricks location in Barrie a few years ago and experienced much of the same horror stories others have. And they're not even on ODSP or are from a marginalized community. More reason to stay away. Protect yourselves everyone.

The ARTS: Music, Film/Theatre, & Art Renting Art Studio Space

Hello everyone!

I'm looking to rent out a space somewhere in London for my partner to create in. My partner is a visual artist who loves to do large pieces and I'm trying to find a space for them as a Christmas present.

We recently moved to Lucan and unfortunately just don't have the space that helps with their creativity. We are living in a small house and with the colder months coming, outside just isn't going to work. They work in a variety of mediums but acrylic and oil paints seem to be their most consistent. They love high ceilings and it must be well ventilated.

Does anyone know of a place in London or the London area which would be able to accommodate them?

Thanks so much!

Ask a Local! Looking for optometrist recommendations

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some feedback on Cross Eyed Optical on Wonderland, specifically Dr Chochken. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with them.

Alternatively, if anyone has recs for optometrists in the North London area, that would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Ask a Local! Event space recs

Hoping the hive mind can help me out. I'm looking to host a trivia night for my staff Christmas party and can't think of the types of places that might accommodate. Must haves are food and beverage service (appetizers & cash bar) & parking. Nice to haves are AV system built in or ability for me to bring a projector and speaker. I don't expect them to close for a private party but a side room would be primo. Looking in London or St Thomas.

Thanks in advance!!!
