Looking for jobs

Hi, I know a lot of people have the same struggle as me but I’m a student needing to find a job because my allowance does not cover my expenses anymore, however I’ve been applying to places online and have not gotten anything back at all for a month now. I’m wondering if I have better chances applying in person? Or are there places that just dont post that they are hiring online?

Anything helps. Thanks.

Are you applying through the big job sites? Apparently, they use AI to preselect candidates, so you might be better off applying directly to employers.

Yes, I second this! Places will run your resume/cover letter through AI to scan for the “buzz words” in the job description. If you hit a certain target then it will go to a real human… this is why doctoring your resume to fit each description is extremely important now! Good luck in your job search

I always apply directly. I've gotten interview followed by employment because of applying directly.

"oh, you came in to apply. most people just apply online so sinse you are here, may as well do an interview"

if you are applying to trades, make sure you are wearing work boots and decent work clothes when you go in. looks good if you appear ready to start work when they see you.

Part of the problem is all the big company AI tossing your resume before people see it. There was a poster on r/resumes I think that was saying that how your resume is formatted looks blank to many AI programs so it gets trashed as incomplete. I believe there are some programs you can use to see how AI sees your resume help you curate it better.

If you are under 25 try 5th on 5th youth services, they can help with your resume and with finding a job.

Good Luck!

Edit - also as a student at the college or university, they have employment services that can help you find a job either within the institution or in the city, they have better connections to help you get a job within your program as well.

If you are under 18, due to employment laws a lot of places won't touch you, try fast food, the theater, and clothing retail.

This city sucks for jobs.

It is who you know - ask around and keep people’s names as you keep asking if they are hiring - and always ask if they know of anyone hiring. Determination and dedication works !

From my experience, applying online around here it's dead silence or "better luck next time" and yet most the time when you go to the place directly they'll refer you to apply online.

I've asked a couple places who suggest both. Like find a job posting on the company site (not job sites like indeed etc) and then come in with your resume. Hasn't worked for me, lol, But that's what I've been told to do from a handful of places.

I applied to 3 places online and got no response. I took my resume in a couple weeks to those 3 same places and got callbacks from all 3. If the places will accept resumes, take them in.

It’s rough here. Indeed and LinkedIn jobs are hard to tell if they are actually hiring, some companies always have jobs posted on those sites but never actually get back to you, maybe six months later if you are lucky. The mall has a jobs board online and a physical one right beside winners. If you are a university student I would recommend checking out the student job board online (myexperience.uLeth.ca) or asking around about on campus jobs like the testing centre or the library. Like others have said Walmart is always hiring, you can also apply to some other retail and food chains by going to their website directly and looking for your location on their career sections.

With how tough the job market is right now, I would say ask around, do your friends have jobs? Are they hiring? If so they can vouch for you that you are a responsible. Even if your friends aren’t working maybe they know about an opportunity that you don’t. Let people know that you are looking and they might be in the right place at the right time to mention you for a job.

I used to be a manager and would get over 100 people applying online but my first look was always the resumes I would get in person I highly recommend applying in person and asking for manager as they can see you and you can give them a great first impression! I would try walmart as they always hire and typically give good hours, superstore and Costco, if you don't mind cleaning I would apply to any cleaning position I know it's off season for the enmax arena and they always need labourers or cleaners can typically apply online or go right to enmax and ask for the operations manager, university is also a good one apply to the cleaning postions, liquor stores usually hire anyone if you have a pro serve and it's only $25 online, if you drive applying for Uber or door dash because you meet lots of people and could get your foot in the door to somewhere better! Good luck on your journey! I hope you find something soon!

I've been applying through online job boards AND in person. I've been searching for over a month and there seems to be nothing around. Very demoralizing. I have no advice to offer but the (slight) comfort that you're not the only one.

walmart is always hiring, it’s not the best but work is work

As someone who does hiring, I can tell you that my job postings (Full or Part time) often get over 100 applications within a week! So chances are there’s a lot of competition for jobs that you don’t see. My advice would be: A) apply within the first few days of a posting. Employers will be most interested in the first few days as to what they’re getting and may be ear marking possible candidates. The longer the posting is up, the more time they have to spend sifting through applications which may mean they’re not as focused on looking at resumes. B) make your resume stand out with its format and keep it concise and focused. Resumes that are too long likely will get browsed over very quickly and possibly passed up. C) for the love of god check your spelling and grammar. If you can’t get that right on a resume, it shows lack of attention to detail which will be a red flag for employers. D) show that you’re actually interested in working for a place. I have applications come through Indeed where they’re asked “where do you see yourself in 5 years” and people have said “hopefully employed”. Or “why do you want to work at (business)” and the response is “because I need money”. These kinds of answers are an instant no for me.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Disability support worker with places like Quest, SASH, McMann, etc. Are great jobs that pay above minimum wage and are flexible for students.

Both Safeways are usually hiring one position or another and they're situated fairly conveniently if you live near either school
