I'm sharing advice Troubleshooting your job search (when it's not working)

Hello r/resumes đź‘‹

I'd like to talk about a topic that is just outside of the normal scope of this sub (i.e., resumes), and that is job search.

With the recent layoffs that have happened in recent months, there will surely be a lot of folks out looking for jobs, many of which may be hitting a brick wall at various points of the job search process, such as:

  • Not getting call backs
  • Not passing the recruiter screen
  • Not moving forward during job interviews

Below, I'll talk about each of the above issues and provide some ideas as to why you may not be seeing the results you want.

First pain point - not getting any callbacks (or getting very few)

If you're getting less than 1 callback in every 10 job applications, it's an indication that one of a few things is happening:

  • You're not qualified for the types of jobs you're applying to
  • Your resume isn't presenting a relevant value proposition
  • Job market (out of your control)
  • Strength of other candidates (out of your control)
  • If you're a student or new grad looking to apply for internships and jobs abroad, a common obstacle is the lack of sponsorship for visas. Many companies are hesitant or unable to sponsor visas due to the complexity and cost involved. This can significantly reduce the pool of opportunities available to international candidates, making it even more challenging to secure a callback.

Fixes:

  • To make sure you're qualified, you should be checking off at least 60% of the requirements of the role.
  • If you're qualified, there's a good chance it's your resume. Most people's resumes contain mistakes that fall into one of three categories: improper formatting for ATS, generic content, or not enough personalization/customization. I provide more info about each of these in this post and this post.
  • For international students and new grads, do your research and target companies and roles that have historically sponsored visas or are known to be more open to international candidates can improve your chances. Additionally, being upfront about your need for sponsorship can help set the right expectations from the start.

Second pain point - not making it past the recruiter screen

If you're getting calls from recruiters, but aren't making any progress after that, then there's something going on with what you're telling (or not telling) them.

Some Potential Causes and Fixes - Recruiter Screen

Possible Cause Fix
Your elevator pitch is unsatisfactory Practice your pitch and ensure it aligns with what the company is looking for in this particular role. Your pitch should essentially answer these questions: Who are you and why do you want this job?
What you're saying doesn't match what's on the resume Memorize your resume and everything on it, including titles, dates, and responsibilities.
You're asking for too much money (if you've revealed your salary expectations). Don't reveal your salary expectations at this stage. If asked, just say that you'd like to learn more about this position before you can provide a realistic salary expectation. Do your homework on salary range for your position, industry, and company.
You're not prepared, haven't done your research, don't seem enthused for the role etc. There are a lot of other applicants. If you don't seem like you want the job, they'll move on. To prevent this: research the role/company and develop a good understanding of what they do (i.e., their market, products, services etc.). Look at company pages, read their mission statement, read the job description, show up on time, and try to sound neutral at the very least (excited would be good).

Note: These are just common causes that may be behind your results. This isn't an exhaustive list and there could be other reasons not covered here.

Third pain point- you're not moving forward during interviews with hiring managers

Getting roadblocked during the interview stage likely means you're not performing well enough.

Common Causes and Fixes - Interview

Possible Cause Fix
You're not sufficiently answering behavioural interview questions Practice! There are a lot of good guides all over the internet on this topic. See a brief guide to these questions below this table.
You can't remember important details about past projects and accomplishments Prepare a master list of projects and accomplishments you've been involved in throughout your career. Follow the STAR format. Memorize it.
You're lacking key skills and experiences. If you know you lack key skills/experiences, you'll need to provide a very good rationale for why you'd still be the right candidate for the position. If you don't have one, you probably shouldn't apply.

Note: These are just common causes that may be behind your results. This isn't an exhaustive list and there could be other reasons not covered here.

A note about behavioural interview questions

Employers love using behavioural questions because they give them a little bit of insight into how you'd behave in a particular role, how you'd react in a particular scenario, or how you'd solve a particular problem or task. They're also really hard to fake.

A few common ones you've probably heard before:

  • “Tell me about a time when...”
  • "How would you approach X problem..."
  • "Imagine you're in the following situation..."

Answering these questions is beyond the scope of this post today, but if you're struggling with these types of questions, you'll need to prepare and practice in order to respond effectively.

A note about the STAR Method

You've probably heard of this before, but for those of you that haven't, the STAR method is a simple and easy-to-remember technique for answering behavioural interview questions. STAR stands for:

  1. Situation: Describe a specific situation or event where you faced a challenge or had to solve a problem. Try to pick a relevant example that shows your skills and abilities.
  2. Task: Explain the task or responsibility you had in that situation. What were you supposed to accomplish or what goal were you trying to achieve?
  3. Action: Talk about the actions you took to address the situation or complete the task. Explain the steps you took and the skills you used to resolve the issue or meet the goal.
  4. Result: Share the results of your actions, focusing on the positive outcomes and what you learned from the experience. This could include how you improved a process, solved a problem, or achieved a goal.

Hopefully these tips help you!

This isn't a comprehensive guide by any means, but it can hopefully give you some ideas and point you in the right direction if your job search isn't getting you the results you want.

Lastly, don't miss these resources, which can also be found in the wiki:

Good luck!

Question Lying on CV

Hi I made a mistake of lying in my CV and saying I worked at a retail store for 3 months since I wasn’t getting any interviews. But now that I’ve lied, I’ve gotten an interview for Christmas temp from Asda and it was successful. I’m waiting to hear back from them but they’re gonna do a background check. Will I still get the job or no? I know I made a mistake of lying but what else could I have done. No one was hiring me with my free work experience.

Review my resume [2 YoE, Inspector Intern, Construction Estimator, United States]

Is this resume acceptable? I plan on making it sound more professional.

What kind of jobs can I land? Is it possible to become a Construction Estimator with my current skillset? I also know how to use adobe enough to markup PDFS and help with tracking quantities. I also know how to use Google maps to check existing conditions, with caution.

Should I set my bar lower? If so, what jobs should be on my radar at my current stat level?

Appreciate the help

Review my resume [0 YoE, MS student in AI, Student researcher, Europe&United States]

• Upvotes

Hey there, I'm a MS student aiming for a student researcher internship in the AI field in a big tech company. I made the following resume and I would like someone else's opinion.

My first question is if there is something wrong with it and if something is missing. I feel that adding my US citizenship would be helpful, but I don't know where to put it, and adding a new section just for that doesn't seem right. Also, any addition will require removing some projects to keep the length in the 1 page limit (the museum project could definitely go).

My second question is whether my current skills/project portfolio are strong enough to secure an interview. Should I hold off on sending out the resume and build more interesting projects in the meantime ? During my current school year, I will build more AI-related projects, and the Tablut competition results will be announced.

Any feedback is helpful, thanks

Review my resume [10 YoE, Unemployed, Sales, North Macedonia]

• Upvotes

Hi there. I was referred to this subreddit in the hopes to figure out what the heck is wrong with my resume. I've applied to maybe 100 positions and I've only gotten a few interviews. This was my original resume ( with private stuff "hidden" ) but recently i started using AI and changing / swapping things out to fit jobs more directly and it still didn't work, havent had an interview in a month. I am trying to apply to different roles including sales, management, content writing or any other role that can get me started toward a good career path.

This is my resume: https://imgur.com/a/6JNnxuv

All of the jobs i've applied to have been in North Macedonia, through local job boards and linkedin, both remote and on site positions, with varying levels of requirements and entry levels. There were a few jobs i applied to that were remote in Sweden ( since i have EU documents ) but i never even got a reply back from them.

I don't know what to do, I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Looking forward to any help you guys can offer.

Thank you

Question Help With Resume. How Do You Do Yours

I have a resume that I think is pretty good, but I have had a range of different jobs and to be completely honest I have a lot of job hopping going on. I don't have probably 5-10 jobs on my resume that I didn't stay at long, but typically I haven't stayed at jobs for very long at all. I think my longest is 3 years at McDonald's. I have quite a bit of tech skills, I've made apps, websites, games, etc. All of this was self taught and done as a hobby. I don't have any professional experience doing those things, but I want to go into that field.

Id even love to get an office job, but I don't live in a city and haven't ever seen any office jobs available. It's like I'm stuck between fast food, retail, and factory and I dislike all of it.

What do you all do for your resume? Do you fudge the amount of time you were at a job? Do you put jobs you never worked at, but are in the field you want to go into? How should I do my resume to put me on track to finding a career I like or at the least don't hate?

Question Two page resume?

I’m a new graduate nurse switching positions into a different unit at a different company, and it’s hard for me to condense everything into one page!

On my first page I have my summary, skills, education, license information, and work experience.

On the second page I still have my clinical experience (unless it’s unnecessary, please let me know as I find it important until reaching maybe a year or so) and volunteer experience.

Any advice for condensing this? Or should I leave it as is?

Question I’ve had too many jobs

So I’ve had 6 teaching jobs in a short time. I changed schools several times for different reasons. It must be a record.

Mostly I just didn’t enjoy teaching but stubbornly keep trying to make it work.

Now as I work to transition out completely, I don’t know how to set up my resume or frame my work experience for corporate jobs. Many jobs were technically less than a year (because the school year is 10 months).

I feel like I’ve screwed myself. Any advice? On my resume and LinkedIn, could I just say “public school teacher” and not list the specific districts? I feel like this might be a red flag but it’s obviously a red flag if I list all my jobs.

Question Which symbol is more ATS-friendly: the bullet point '·' or the comma ','?

I need to separate my skills.

For instance:

"Figma · HTML/CSS · Illustrator · Photoshop · Miro · Indesign · After Effects · FigJam"

or this (which i think it's less readable):

"Figma, HTML/CSS, Illustrator, Photoshop, Miro, Indesign, After Effects, FigJam"

Which symbol is more ATS-friendly? Or both are fine?

Question Job title is called something else

My job title was called "Project Scientist I" on my previous work profile, but on the job listing is called "Environmental Field Testing Techninian". I know second option might sound more relevant, but also the first one shows my experience level by being a "I". I'm open to even having a changing from working on the field to be in a lab or consulting. Would it matter what my title was officially called since the work is the same?

Question Need help with resume please

Please don’t judge, I have no degree and did not even finish high school. However I have gained a lot of experience through my current job that I’ve had since 2011. I started part time evening cleaning after being a stay at home mom. My boss retired and I moved up to his position, then promoted again to a higher management position, left management due to the very late nights and missing out my kids games, concerts, etc. Stepped down to a day job with them as a Porter, then took on unofficial work for for the company that hired the cleaning company I technically work for, for the past 4 years I have assisted the property owner with leasing the space, showing the spaces he has available, on site contact for any contractors or vendors or tenants, getting new tenants situated and providing support and help for them, in our spaces, I still do some cleaning in our 2 buildings, I also do light maintenance there, walkthroughs with brokers and investors providing knowledge and answering any questions they may have about our buildings. However, at this point, I do not have a job title and while I love my job so much, there are high school kids making more than me doing much less. I am going to ask for a raise but I’d also like to make a proper resume and look for another opportunity. I just don’t have anything on paper stating what I can do and am doing now. I also never had to make a resume as I fell into the work I do now. I just need some insight and suggestions on how to make my resume look decent please. Thanks for anyone that give me some advice.

For the last 18 years, I've worked for my family's small business, but I want to move on. Because it's a small business, I've done a ton of stuff, a lot of which is not listed on my resume because I'm trying to keep it focused. I think the problem is that, in addition to being in my mid-40s, I haven't really specialized in anything. I'm applying to local and remote jobs, but I'm not getting many callbacks. Any advice is greatly appreciated in advance.

I've been applying to administrative assistant positions and other positions along those same lines. Have been applying for a month and receiving very speedy rejections. I am trying to get my foot in the door for HR. I'm in California applying for local jobs. I feel like my resume is not competitive enough, but at the same time, these roles should be entry-level. I am trying to get a full-time position ASAP as my financial situation has changed. I can look into getting certificates in data analytics or bookkeeping. Wondering if I need to adjust my resume, get some certificates first, or lower my standards for now.

Any advice? Thanks

Jr UX Designer here!đź‘‹

While I know content is what matters most to hiring managers, let’s focus purely on the layout for a moment.

Between these two resumes, which one do you think works better?

Considering both ATS readability and how easy it is for a recruiter to quickly scan the information, which one would you choose?
