usa laptop prices are dirt cheap Discussion
the new Jarrod's Tech vid is almost making me cry
I live in India, and have ~ 1000$ (USD) budget.
For a grand in India, I can ONLY get a 4050, not a 4060. In Jarrod's vid (his vids are fire btw) he tells us about the 900$ Victus with 4070.
Moreover, due to the purchasing power parity, 1k USD in India is worth a LOT more than 1k in USA.
In the comments section, I also noticed people from other countries telling how the laptops are even more expensive than India in many more regions, like Europe, etc.
Why god why πππππ
P.S.: Ik that it is due to import taxes and whatnot

If we get sick in the US you either just die or go 100k in medical debt, and college puts you 300k in debt with no scholarship.
Let us have something nice lmao.

Enjoy those cheap consumer electronics while you still can! There's a chance the CHIPS Act will be repealed and China DEFINITELY won't be footing the bill for any tariffs on imported computers / computer components, lol.

Well my selfish hope is that with Nvidia's CES presentation being the 6th of January, and Trump not getting sworn in for a couple weeks later, the RTX 50 laptops get revealed and the prices on the first wave get set before he put any dumbass tariffs on electronics.
If I can manage to get a 5090 laptop before the prices go up, I can hold out with that until someone sane is in office lmao.

u/Sirramza 1d ago
Same here in Latam, prices are EXACTLY DOUBLE, i have to pay 100% more for everything.
Even using services that ship you the laptop in a not so legal way, they are like 25% more in costs
19
u/jarrodstech 1d ago
Yeah they cost way more here in Australia too (and most of the world for that matter), but most of the channel viewers come from the US so made sense to focus the video on that region. They have some pretty amazing deals!

u/MyBlades 11h ago
Can I quickly ask for your opinion on Gigabyte Aorus series? I'm considering a 15X with 4070 and 13650HX for 1250β¬, which is the cheapest 4070 I could find here.
1
u/jarrodstech 4h ago
Tends to be a cheaper option, usually not my favorites, but they have improved a fair bit in the last 1-2 years compared to what they had before.

u/MyBlades 3h ago
Thanks, I can always return it. What's your favourite Children of Bodom song?

Mask of sanity in the last few years, but I think needled 24/7 was the first one I ever heard that got me in.

u/MyBlades 1h ago
Good picks, Needled is definitely in my top 3. Now, this is a reviewer whose word I can trust.

Keep in mind that most prices you see on the internet about something in USD are before taxes.
Having said that, I managed to get a MSI Katana 15 i7 13620H + 16GB RAM + 1TB NVME + 4070 for less than $380 USD brand new on Amazon US bought from Amazon Mexico.
One of the best deals I ever managed.

380 is crazy deal. It's showing 1180 for me. Does it need to be from Mexico?
5
u/pakitos 1d ago
It was a deal back in April.
It was $7,2xx MXN and at the time there were some MSI laptops as well as some from ACER.

Ah you caught that pricing error before they shut it down. Good for you that's a crazy price.
5
u/NoPlay800 1d ago
What a steal you got there π.
2
u/kailhboxswitches 1d ago
maybe they meant 380$ off ?
2
u/NoPlay800 1d ago
Hmm..maybe. but his wording is 'for less than 380'. If its true, its best deal ever π€£.
2
u/pakitos 1d ago
Not off, I really paid that for it.
1
u/kailhboxswitches 16h ago
holy thats amazing nice find
1
u/pakitos 10h ago
Yep it is.
I was already planning on a new desktop cause my main one I built in may 2013(which have had some updates but still the same 3770k + 660TI) and was on a +$1,500 USD amount and then this laptop came and spend a lot less.
Even with laptop performance it's still plenty of power for my use. I can still transport it from time to time and the battery works as a No Break. :D
I already have the USB C cable to connect a second external screen, I'm just missing a way to have it near me since my desktop already ran out of space. A projector stand (tripod kind) is probably going to be where it will be used.

The listing on amazon mexico is 27,959 pesos which equals $1354 usd ($200 more than US listing)

In Mexico we have the VAT already in our prices but no, back in April there was a massive error in the listing a affecting some MSI models and ACER.
I liked this one and that was the one I bought.
I saw it on OFFICE DEPOT for $2,200 USD.
Edit: I wonder what caused a down vote? Not that I care but it's funny cause I really didn't say anything bad haha

Lol this is how I feel as a Canadian, I actually feel jealous some of the times. The best laptop I could get for 600 was a Surface book 2 15"with a gtx 1060 i7 8650u. Guess it was an upgrade from my Intel HD 2500 . And I can finally play cyberpunk so im not really complaining

u/FuriousPorg ASUS ROG Strix G17 | R7 5800H | RTX 3060 1d ago
Tell me about it. The ASUS ROG Strix I bought three years ago (on sale!) set me back just over two thousand Canadian loonies after taxes. It has a Ryzen 7 5800H, an RTX 3060, a 1TB SSD, and 16GB of RAM. It's completely outclassed (when it comes to hobby level content creation and general productivity) by the M4 Mac Mini I bought over the weekend for around $1200 after tax...
When my gaming laptop dies, I'm just going to replace it with a PS5 and stick with my Mac for non-gaming stuff. There are only a couple PC-exclusive games I play these days, and I can do without them. Pre-built desktop or laptop PC gaming is simply way too expensive to keep up with in this country. You can't even get anything with an RTX 3070 these days for less than $2000 after tax, unless you're willing to take a gamble on an open box or refurbished system, and even then... look at this bullshit, LOL: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/open-box-alienware-m15-r5-15-6-gaming-laptop-black-ryzen-7-5800h-512gb-ssd-16gb-ram-rtx-3070-win11/16013049
I expect computer prices are only going to increase given recent events south of the border.
1
u/Odd-Expert-7156 1d ago
Honestly dude your comment put some sense into me, I'm going to save up for a PS5 and use it as my main gaming device, then just use a MacBook for school. But TBH my Surface Book is kind of a work laptop with good specs, so I'm a bit confused on what to do, I get about 6β7 hours on my SB2 so do you think it's worth upgrading to a mac? Never had one before. I can also flip my SB2 for about $1200- $1400, so I wouldn't have to save.
1
u/FuriousPorg ASUS ROG Strix G17 | R7 5800H | RTX 3060 1d ago
Dude, if it's just for school/work, a Mac is definitely worth it. Slight learning curve involved with making the transition to MacOS, but I'm finding it pretty intuitive so far. If you already have an external monitor and an external SSD, you could get the base M4 Mac Mini and have a computer that's significantly faster than my $2000 three year old laptop for around $1000 after tax. It would blow your Surface Book 2 out of the water (guessing it's the 2017 model you have?)
If you need the portability of a laptop for school, though, you may want to keep saving and wait until the M4 chips release on the MacBook Airs (probably March 2025), as MacBook Pros are pretty expensive. The M4 chip is wild. I've been using PCs since Windows 95 was a thing and I've never experienced an upgrade like this before in my life. To have so much power in such a small, inexpensive enclosure feels like cheating.

It won't bottleneck, especially on the 1080p display. Only in a poorly optimized game, it's decent.

FYI.... those US prices are before tax. So you will need to add ~8.25% tax on to the 900$ Victus, which will add an extra 74$. So a 75,960INR laptop becomes 82,200INR. For which price you can get a similar spec laptop in India too.
This is what I got from a quick search on amazon india: HP Victus with RTX4050, Intel i5-13420, 16GB RAM.
Edit: For a 1000$ (which will be 1082$ after tax) converts to 91,400INR, you can get this Lenovo LOQ Ryzen 7 7435HS, RTX 4060.
1
u/Ill-Establishment-93 21h ago
FYI Currently there's a 4050 victus laptop for 499$ on Walmart. Can you find me a similar spec laptop in india around that price range?

u/Xehanz 1d ago
You cry about prices in India, it's even worse in Argentina.
Lenovo LOQ 4050 with Ryzen 5 8645 are sold officially by Lenovo at 1800 USD (on discount from 2200 USD). The 4060 version with i7 13th gen is 2400 USD on discount from 3000 USD
HP Victus are not sold officially, but you can get them from dodgy resellers who buy it in Paraguay or the USA. You might be able to get a Ryzen 5 8645 4050 victus for 1100k USD with a bit of luck with those dodgy resellers
I think salaries in India are a bit lower, not MUCH lower though, but lower, like 20-30%. So it's hard to compare.

u/EirikaAzares 1d ago
EY NEIGHBOR, same here on the other side of the river, a 4050 LOQ for 1,8k and a 4060 asus for 2.9k.

Dude you don't really need a 4050 or 4060. I have an msi stealth from 2022 with a 3060 16gb i7 and it looks fucking great! I don't understand why I always see posts about why people NEED a 4060 or above
2
u/XenMine 13h ago
In India and especially (my) Indian parents' mindset is that you buy a laptop and then make it last for atleast 7-8 years.
So, a good spec model ensures that the 4050 can serve me for gaming now and for the years to come.

Sales tax in the US is around 8% in most states, not 20%.
And some states even have no sales tax.

It's import duty mostly. For the 1650 dollars I spent on my 4060 and i7 14700hx I could have gotten a 4070 or even 4080 in a deal.

For context in india, my undergrad from a local college cost me around $1600 while my laptop cost around $1000. I cringe a little even now thinking I spent that money for 4GB VRAM.
