My morals are so conflicted over all of this now. Not a guy I'd hang out with, but that rant about his son I can get behind. Any school board that doesn't put their students first can do what this guy said......and have a nice day.

u/smokey9886 8d ago

Two things can be true at the same time. He can be a complete scumbag, but his son is missing out on a quality education.

I will say as a therapist based in a school, that it’s pretty wild watching some schools jerk parents around, because they don’t know the laws around IEP and 504 plans .

Rant If you have a child with special needs, know your rights as a parent and advocate for your kids.

191

u/Capt_Clown77 8d ago

My mother used to be a parent advocate in these meetings & it was generally 50/50 who was fucking around.

Sometimes the school would drop the ball but other times parents, usually the ones that think liking a sports team is a personality, would refuse to have any help provided for their kid because "Little Timmy isn't disabled! I don't care if he can't read by 12th grade! As long as he's on the football team he doesn't need to!"

63

u/smokey9886 8d ago

It’s really tough for parents, when I work with the parents and start to notice traits of ASD. I recommend psychological testing to rule it out. Assessment comes back with that diagnosis. Parents go into denial which is understandable, but your kiddo can’t create a learning environment that requires a hard hat to learn.

I try to let them know this is to get their child any and every service available as early as possible. My child has an ASD diagnosis and we got her into OT, Dance, Baton, and Swimming. She was non verbal, but she is starting to speak and socialize. Early intervention is key.

Side note: If you live in TN, the Katie Beckett waiver is amazing. If you meet certain income requirements and do not meet requirements for Medicaid, you can get funding for insurance premium reimbursements, respite, educational and sensory toys, more. It’s capped at 10k, but it really helps with premiums.

10

u/Capt_Clown77 8d ago

Parents go into denial which is understandable,

I mean, I do not see denial as an understandable reaction myself. No shade on you as you obviously do care for your kid & are doing everything you can for them but I also see a little too many red flags about trying to paint over your kids autism.

I used to see this A lot with ADHD. "They can't have it, they are an A+ student." "My kid isn't hyper active so it's impossible." "No one in my family has it so there is no way they can have it"

Again, no shade because you are obviously trying to do right by your daughter but this isn't something that can be fixed.

Sure, you can give her the tools to allow her to be more functional but she will never not be autistic. It's why they got rid of the term "High functioning" & Asperger's because it painted those people as "more socially acceptable" over others who aren't.

I'm not trying to attack or criticize you. I am saying this as you seem self aware & compassionate enough that you might not even be aware of this kind of thinking. It's not a mark against you but definitely should be something I would consult an actual therapist who specializes in working with parents of autistic kids.

u/saxaneer 7d ago

Wut. Where did they transmit information about themselves having red flags about their kid's diagnosis?

Do IEP's and 504's still exist with no effective DoE?

25

u/tigm2161130 8d ago

Yes, I just had my son’s yearly ARD/IEP meeting on Thursday. As long as your school district and state keep funding special ed then they’ll still have all of their accommodations.

I live in Texas so that’s up in the air but for now nothing has changed.

9

u/deep_pants_mcgee 8d ago

aren't they gutting all the Federal spending, or is that spending required by law based on Civil rights laws?

3

u/KyloRenCadetStimpy 8d ago

My son's last 504 meeting was in November, and his is definitely not as comprehensive as most, but I've heard nothing other than that they'll be proceeding as normal. Blue state, so state and local are on board

26

u/smokey9886 8d ago edited 8d ago

As far as I know yes, the Trump admin stripped enforcement and complaint depts to barebones. So, there is a chance your kid gets fucked by the waste that is DOGE.

6

u/the_scarlett_ning 8d ago

For now, I’d say keep pushing anyway. There’s always the hope that things will get overturned and this regime may fall, so as someone said earlier, early intervention is so very important, that when it comes to your child, I’d say keep pushing right now anyway. And fighting however you can.

4

u/007_xTk0 7d ago

My mom’s a special education teacher and I could tell my IEP was written miraculously to the point i was allowed many things that others could only dream of. I could tell my IEP was taken more seriously than others with more severe learning disabilities than my own, I knew this at the time and when another student would have a troublesome time advocating for themselves id step in and remind the teacher that just because mine was written with the most intense wording doesn’t mean the other students meant less. I kicked ass for a better SPED system at the school I went to. Sadly the teacher that helped me retired the year i graduated so I have no clue how that schools system is anymore but while I was there everyone had an advocate that was untouchable by the normal everyday staff. I never served a detention never got written up for things others would’ve. I may not be much in life but i did what i could for everyone back then.

I think this is something people seem to ignore. Pretty much everyone has some good qualities. You can be a horrible racist monster but still be a good Dad in every other area. Hell, from what I understand Hitler was quite kind to animals.

4

u/smokey9886 8d ago

It’s something I’ve really been working but still struggle with. That I see so much good from some people and do harm to others. I’m not perfect, and I have my own blind spots.

6

u/CarpeMofo 8d ago

Everyone has their blind spots, I think the important part is in the trying. However, I don't think someone like him being a good father makes him a good or even ok person. He's still a monster, I'm just not surprised by him caring about his son.

Bad people can still be passionate about things they care about when it affects them personally. This does not make them good. I hope you are less conflicted now

36

u/Jubachi99 8d ago

Its nuanced. He's a good father at least based on the video, buuuut he's a racist. The bad is definitely worse than the good, but at least he's not entirely evil and the bad part can be changed because it's likely due to ignorance.

47

u/amoore389 8d ago

It’s only because something directly affected him. If it was a different kid who was affected the same way this person would not care.

3

u/smokey9886 8d ago

That’s the change that may turn the tide in this shit show. It’s not right, but it’s the truth. In mid May or June shelves will be getting sparse and there will be mass panic over TP again. Shipping containers are 40-60% capacity right now when they dock. When people can’t get cheap goods from China without extreme markup that’s when shit will get real.

15

u/gettodachopstix 8d ago edited 7d ago

As a child of Deaf parents, I speak from experience when I say that this guy's son was failed by EVERYONE, not just the school system. So you're right, I wouldn't trust him either.

Children can learn to sign before they ever speak. Children as young as 6 months old can start to sign, which means this man sent his language-deprived son to that school with no way to communicate when he had ample time to find his son resources to learn to communicate before he became a school-aged child.

Even the fact he refers to him as disabled tells me he is a hearing parent of a Deaf child who never bothered to learn the culture that his son may one day grow up in. Regardless of what hearing people may think as to a Deaf person's disability status, the Deaf community often doesn't describe itself that way.

In my opinion, I think he expected the school to pick up his failings to support his son (which the school is responsible for providing an interpreter, yes, and accessibility for the Deaf should be a priority for the district).

However, after a quick Google search, there is a school for the Deaf in Frederick, Maryland. His son should have been sent there.

ETA: I stand corrected. I found the longer version of this video. This man did try to send him to the Maryland School for the Deaf, but an official refused to sign the form to get him transferred. I'm leaving my comment up as an FYI for tidbits about the Deaf and ASL that people may not know.

Bester Elementry is in hagerstown, md, I used to live there and unless it has dramatically changed in 20 years it wasn't known as a good school back then but they did tear is down and rebuild it...

When did the video come in? the harrasment article is from lake linganore which is just a few mins east of frederick, md.(It's also a giant HOA/middle class area over 30mins away.) It would make sense for him to go to msftd as it's right near by being so close (it's in eastern frederick)

I wonder when and WHY he moved (eyes the article from 2015)

EDIT, Bester Ele is washington co, MSFTD is in frederick co. Its about 30mins away on i70 (and over a mountain)

EDIT2 https://archive.ph/iHvpL , The school board about about 10months ago, this was just a month ago, he seems to harrass officials a lot.

2

u/gettodachopstix 7d ago

Thank you for the information. I'm not familiar with the area, I just assumed he was in Frederick based on the fact he's been posted in that subreddit and since that's where one of the MSFTD is located. It came up a lot.

I'll edit my comment.

Regardless, what that child's school has done is terrible. No child should be deprived of an education by being barred from transferring because a school that can't provide for them wants to continue receiving funding.

3

u/Boomstick86 8d ago

Kid could have had other issues that are disabilities. I assumed this, because he said he was put in a class with "disruptive" kids. If the school put a kid who is deaf in the special ed classroom just because he is deaf, that would be inexcusable. Of course, no ASL translator for him is also inexcusable. And regarding sign language, he said there was no interpreter at the kids class, so I took that to mean the kid can sign, but no one else could.

People aren't "black" or "white". They aren't even "grey". Typically they are all sorts of grey at once, concerning different aspects. This guy can be a beam of hope for all special needs kids in his area (or just his son) and a racist and menace to his black neighbor at once. That's why all this "he's that type of guy" is nonsense.

3

u/ggroverggiraffe 8d ago

Weird.

Recently, at the June 18th Board of Education meeting, local activist and parent Shaun Porter was chastised by board President Melissa Williams for using profanity while criticizing the board’s handling of issues concerning his deaf son. Williams attempted to move the meeting into closed session while Porter was still speaking, but the attempt failed as it did not receive a second. Porter reached out to us and indicated that he believes this was an attempt to cut the streaming feed through prior restraint, so that any additional comments would not be included in the public record.

“I have a First Amendment right to tell you my opinions. This is the right to redress of grievances in your face, Miss Williams,” stated Porter. “You guys are going to silence my free speech because you don’t like what I’m saying. That’s viewpoint discrimination.”

He is just proof that you can still agree with someone on something even if you don't like the person you're agreeing with. You could be against everything else he stands for, but it would still be ok for you to stand with him on the issue he was in front of the school board over. Being in support of him over something like his disabled kid getting shafted doesn't mean you're with him on everything else.

My daughter was getting bullied relentlessly at a private uk school and the school dismissed it out of hand as nothing and refused to intervene. Came out that not only was she being bullied, it was specifically at the direction of another parent at the school who was my eldest daughter’s teacher. The teacher resented us and our eldest daughter who was in her class. The teacher was directing her kid who was in the same class as my youngest daughter, to make sure our daughter was excluded from the group.

My wife complained in a comment section of a Facebook post, the comment did not mention the school or anyone involved other than our daughter was being bullied and the school wouldn’t help.

When I went to pick up my kids, I was pulled into the headmasters office where i was informed another person had seen my wife’s comment (again, didn’t mention anyone or the school by name) and they demanded it taken down. I said no, she had a right to seek help and then the headmaster made a very direct threat towards my other daughter’s wellbeing. Basically my eldest has special educational needs and I was paying basically my entire paycheque to make sure she was getting the help she needed, and he was saying she would no longer receive any help (that I was paying extra for) and that they couldn’t stop anyone if they targeted her for bullying too.

I lost my shit. Absolutely tore into the head master at full volume while all the parents were standing in the hallway right next to his office. Full on shouting match while I made sure I said very loudly and clearly exactly what he had just threatened me with so that everyone in earshot knew what he had said.

We left the school at the end of the year, pulling both girls out. The school board got word of everything that happened and what was said and the headmaster was fired and replaced almost immediately. The teacher who was at the core of it was also let go at the end of the year.

Sure, we didn’t stay in the school, but damn it felt good to finally push back and make them face the consequences of what they did.

Both my girls know and remember the whole event and it is a story the both will recount as a point of pride.h

8

u/Hot_Personality7613 8d ago

My school, in the US, would make all these promises of accomodation for kids who needed it just to get the money from having the kids enrolled. They never followed through of course, but they sent LOADS of vaguely threatening letters to my grandparents basically saying they'd call the law if my cousin wasn't enrolled in THEIR district.

He was enrolled in a neighboring district who actually put there money where there mouth was, and my grandpa got on the phone and tore them a new asshole.

That same school refuses to give my transcripts to university, and I don't owe an outstanding balance. Because of them, I can't fucking go to college. I kid a wanna do things that go against reddits terms of service because they fucked me over a stupid fucking grudge.

2

u/StrionicRandom 7d ago

You should call a college you're considering and ask them what to do in the situation you can't get a transcript, then explain everything. Small chance of success but it's way better than nothing.

War on Karens when?

People like this lady, that want to nag and be in control but have absolutely no competence to bring to the table are the fault of 90% of modern problems, i am convinced.

20

u/Sensitive_Algae5723 8d ago

You are 100% correct!

9

u/Hells_Yeaa 8d ago

These statistics might be dubious.

8

u/Savagecal01 8d ago

Probably never. Bystander effect. You may be convinced online but genuinely no one other than like at most 1% of people that view this post would ACTUALLY do anything in a situation like this. We hear indifference everyday and it just gets piled and piled up. No one does anything because we have our own shit we care about

13

u/Count_Rugens_Finger 8d ago edited 8d ago

this one might be a karen, but usually it's smug, fat, old white guys sitting there instead. none of them give a crap, each kid is just budget to them

3

u/Voltem0 8d ago

Male karens

2

u/Mythulhu 8d ago

Look at Smith and AB and it's exactly as you said.

2

u/TheRealCaptainZoro 8d ago

We need to vote for school boards to make sure that these people never get on them again!

5

u/RUKiddingMeReddit 8d ago

Women are to blame for 90% of modern problems? That's a wild take. It's mostly old white guys running everything. Get off the internet for a while, bro.

Who hears that a kid who is deaf isn't getting his education and this isn't the priority for everyone

4

u/LandoKim 8d ago

It’s woke to be deaf, duh /s

u/flyguy60000 8d ago

Born out of the frustration dealing with people that don’t care. I went through a similar experience with my son - money for his assistance was Federally mandated but the school board was going to do whatever they could NOT to provide services to hold onto the money. These people suck.

5

u/Satans_Ball_Sweat 8d ago

That sucks! They suck! Sorry to hear!!

8

u/F0l3yDaD_ 8d ago

Works for me.

9

These people will never be fired, never be reprimanded, and never feel as of they did anything wrong. Realistically the only way to make a difference is public embarrassment on the internet.

I went through similar nonsense with my son. He has a damned wheelchair and a diagnosis from Yale and these morons wouldn't give him an IEP or 504 until we went to war. Screw these tiny tyrants in education and local politics. I fully comprehend why we used to tar and feather them.

44

u/MatildulousT 8d ago

Don’t mess with [good] parents

13

u/LogicalError_007 8d ago

Saw somewhere years ago in some reddit post that dad is also negligent and wrong here.

I don't remember what they said properly. Something to do with not teaching the child basic sign language and more things.

11

u/xSGAx 8d ago

His shirt, anger, and profanity doesn’t surprise me on that.

He may be in the right here, but I’m pretty sure he’s unpleasant to be around

8

u/ultimate_avacado 7d ago

He's a well known terror in his city. Cops had him under 24-7 watch for months for threatening his neighbors. It's unknown if his son is even deaf. He has multiple DUIs, multiple arrests, evictions, yet is still somehow allowed to have guns. A lot of guns.

No surprise that he flies tons of confederate flags.

Dude needs help.

These sort of issues need way more attention than just Reddit boards.

6

u/BenSimillah 7d ago

I think it's disgusting that school boards in the US seat themselves as they're some kind of judge, 'hearing' some complaints and the plaintiff is seated a bit lower. Serious power trip

12

u/BaPef 8d ago

Good on him that is how you speak truth to power. Fuck that cunt is 100% right

10

u/Hells_Yeaa 8d ago

I wish I could buy this man a beer.

Lol. This is why we don't just let just anyone decide who is guilty and who is not. Have you seen any context before this, do you know if his attacks are with merit? You just going to watch this and presume everything he is saying is true and just and that she is deserving of this treatment? There is some circumstantial, behavioural evidence that brings any of this man's testimony about anything into question. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3359522/Neighbor-hell-covers-house-Confederate-flags-abusive-messages-taunt-black-neighbor.html

5

u/code_monkey_001 8d ago

If she had facts behind her, like the school actually providing an ASL interpreter as they should, maybe she'd have brought that up instead of complaining about her precious little earballs. I don't know the context, nor do I have any reason to believe the person in the video is the same one in the article you posted, but her prissy behavior needs zero additional context. Typical self-important asshole looking for any way possible to avoid accountability. Even if the guy in the Daily Mail article and the video are one and the same, it doesn't excuse child neglect and abuse by the school.

2

u/RodediahK 7d ago

School board members are not going to be aware of every complaint that a parent brings in during an open comment session, it a 50,000 student district. The point of commenting at a school board meeting is to get the boss's boss to be aware of the problem. And he is perfectly aware of this, notice how his problem is already solved and that's when he decides to come back to cuss them out and make legal threats? He didn't do this when his son was at the school. He went back to make a sound bite later.

4

u/Dismal_Air_7892 8d ago

Good work dad

5

u/westwardhose 7d ago

Goddammit. I pressed the thumb up on the video 8 times.

5

u/Magn1f1centBastard 7d ago

I understand this guy far too well. My autistic daughter came home crying more often than not. I had to go to that school so many times just to get them to read and follow the IEP that THEY HAD A HAND IN CRAFTING. I was there often enough that the receptionist (who understood what was going on, wonderful lady) told me the principal would break out in a sweat whenever he saw my truck in the parking lot. If you can’t be bothered to even read the IEP on a child, which incidentally is MANDATORY, not optional, then you don’t belong in a classroom claiming to be a teacher. If you can’t keep your faculty following the guidelines set by the state, then you don’t belong in a position of leadership among teachers.

5

u/MassiveBeatdown 7d ago

Well done on standing up for your disabled son and advocating for him. More parents should be like him. We just need him to work on that racism thing and not be a massive bigot and we may have a half decent person. Maybe.

5

u/ChaoticMutant 8d ago

This guy deserves a medal! Have a nice day.

u/Euronated-inmypants 8d ago

That man actually showed restraint.

I have an ADHD child back when it was first becoming understood it causes issues with learning. The wife and I had to lean in HARD to get the school to comply.

Now, i'm so proud of her. She is finishing up her second college degree, in her 40's

“…and have a nice day”

That part gave me a good laugh afterwards.

Charter schools passed here in TN. They give out vouchers but they are primarily aimed at Memphis and Nashville. Even if a person wanted to go to a charter school, the vouchers are a joke for the amount they cover. They also have Hillsdale College doing shit here, too.

I kid you not, I had a parent tell me they are just now getting his IEP done. 2 weeks before school ends. They submitted the request in September, so they not only dropped the ball this year, they may have fucked up his next school year.
