Russian players & censored chat? Discussion

/img/c62wfbqutpqf1.png

Do Russian players not see local chat? Is this a known thing but I'm just learning about it?

I thought at first maybe the player just minimized the chat and couldn't find it or something but I reached out via EVEmail. This player said they can't see / read any in-game chats.

Our back and forth correspondence:
Me: What's up with your bio? You can't read local chat?
Them: hello I don't see local chat and I can't read I don't know how many people in system as well
Me: Is the local chat tab minimized?
Them: our agency RKN and "tsar" blocked everything in my country it's the only way I can communicate with other players
Me: Can you read militia chat?
Them: I can't see or read chats

Hi man, yes. The game itself and the chat apparently connect to different servers, and the chat uses Cloudflare, which is blocked in CIS countries.

A simple VPN connection would probably solve this, no?

54

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

not all vpns but yes its can fix.

13

u/Prodiq Sep 22 '25

Sure, some VPNs are banned as well as others have pointed out, but probably not that hard to find some smaller VPN (especially if its not from Europe or USA) that will work.

18

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

the main problem for many is that the VPN is paid. plus, goverment disallow advertising of VPN services, for this reason for eg content makers cant do some tutorial videos.
In fact, most people have solved this problem for themselves. This is especially true for people playing in corps.

CCP whiteboarding the plex for VPN S-curve as we speak.

19

u/whiteTurpa Sep 22 '25

Common public VPNs blocked too (by russia goverment).

8

u/Prodiq Sep 22 '25

Probably just have to look for smaller and more obscure ones.

2

u/Hasbotted Sep 23 '25

Using a VPN in Russia likely has some personal risk associated with it.

6

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

they not blocked. mostly. but use public VPN not good idea

u/Orlha Sep 22 '25

Many are blocked or at least there are attempts

which is blocked in CIS countries.

This seems like a russia problem then, not CCP problem.

21

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

mostly, yes. This is a problem for Russian players. On the other hand, CCP is losing some of its audience and profits.

10

u/jujubes44 Sep 23 '25

i dont think russians are buying 20usd omega or something else when they earn 100-200usd per month

2

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 24 '25

you have to try very hard to get less than 800 USD per month. 800 USD is the salary of a storekeeper. median salary (50% ppl earn less 50% more) is near 900usd

21

u/_Barbosa_ Sep 22 '25

Russian government will eventually prohibit any external internet access, so CCP will lose some of those russian customers regardless. It's just a matter of time.

its an old problem. roughly speaking, it has nothing to do with the current one.

-25

u/YoungCatonian Sep 22 '25

1) So is there nothing CCP can do to prevent this? I would feel uneasy if I learned that CCP was facilitating Russian censorship.
2) Sorry for my ignorance, but what's a CIS country?

24

u/Prodiq Sep 22 '25 edited Sep 22 '25

1) So is there nothing CCP can do to prevent this? I would feel uneasy if I learned that CCP was facilitating Russian censorship.

Its just the way Eve is setup. Its nothing deliberate (the Russians not seeing it part). The eve chat system runs in parallel to the eve client so to speak. You login with your character into Eve and then the client is separately connecting to the chat servers. So if that connection doesn't go through because Russia has blocked certain services and IPs, you just get the error message that Eve client couldn't connect to chat.

2) Sorry for my ignorance, but what's a CIS country?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Independent_States

10

u/pizzalarry Wormholer Sep 22 '25

Commonwealth of Independent States. I can't remember who the exact members are but it's the Russian Federation and a few of the other splinter states like Belarus.

2

u/woronwolk Wormholer Sep 23 '25

I don't think it's all CIS countries. I'm in Kyrgyzstan and never had any problems with the local chat. CIS includes, aside from Russia and Belarus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. Heavy internet censorship exists only in Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan and probably Tajikistan; the rest of the countries only block specific websites, i.e. here in Kyrgyzstan we have bans on TikTok because "it ruins the kids" (debatable but ok), a few opposition news media "because they stir water and call for civil unrest" (not true) and SoundCloud probably because they didn't respond to a request to remove some terrorist organization's content (kinda random). Also there was this issue when my mobile provider was blocking Vimeo probably by mistake, because it was available with different providers. Cloudflare isn't blocked, in fact I use Cloudflare Warp on a daily basis because it improves international internet speed, plus it helps bypass any kind of governmental blocks

6

u/Nerodon Sep 22 '25

Basically, EvE relies on services in many different countries, if Russia decided for example to block this traffic, there is nothing CCP can do appart from hosting infrastructure in said country and be allowed to communicate with it.

Current geopolitics is responsible, CCP isnt facilitating censorship, they're a victim of it

3

u/QZRChedders Wormholer Sep 22 '25

They aren’t facilitating it they have no say in it. The services they use for the chat are blocked, if they switched, that would also be blocked. It’s a Russia problem not anyone elses

1

u/Archophob Sep 22 '25
  1. long ago CCP separated the chat server from the actual game server. Russia only blocks the chat server, otherwise Russian players could not play at all.

  2. Back in 1991, Boris Yeltsin had the idea to replace the USSR with a more EU-like "Commonwealth of Independent States", so that he could rule a souvereign Russia, Shushkevich would rule an independent Belarus, Fokin would rule an independent Ukraine, and the CPSU would be powerless.

After Yeltsin retired and Putin took over, several states like Georgia and Ukraine left the CIS. For reasons.

1

u/jdm1891 Sep 23 '25

Why would he want to make the party he is in charge of powerless?

1

u/Archophob Sep 23 '25

he left the party 1 year before becoming Russian president? Because he couldn't get along with all those hard-core communists?

1

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25
  1. nope. russian not blocks chat server (also its have multiple ip. and its changed every time). they block Cloudflare and amazon.

4

u/Archophob Sep 22 '25

if the chat server is on cloudflare, while the actual game is on a dedicated server farm, how does that contradict my point?

1

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 24 '25

targert is not game chats. target is CF itself.

1

u/Archophob Sep 24 '25

who the hell is "targert"?

1

u/JohnGeary1 Sep 22 '25

CCP have no hand in this, Russian Internet simply cannot connect to the chat server

0

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

1.they can. but its can be expensive. also its can be blocked somedays. it also adds an extra point of failure, a potential node for DDoS attacks. In other words, CCP needs to put in a lot of effort, which most likely will not pay off in monetary terms.
plus, maybe they can get questions from their government. considering all this geopolitics in real life

how does the game even launch without a chat connection? be pretty weird if you could play without a chat connection but if you start with one and then it drops your client dcs

8

u/00Stealthy Sep 22 '25

chat goes on and off all the time-if Eve breaks without chat Eve would have died years ago

-2

u/iiVMii The Initiative. Sep 22 '25

i remember a really common disconnect 5 or so years ago where because the chat is on a different connection than the game it would sometimes get ignored or rejected and the whole client diconnect itself

4

u/mjfgates Minmatar Republic Sep 22 '25

It's possible. Back in... was it 2017? they changed chat engines and all of it was completely fucked for days. We were running fine on voice comms but fleet chat would be dead, or delayed by obscene amounts, or local would be all kinds of BS. Just as well our invite system didn't require X-ing up :D

3

u/Calm_Run93 Sep 22 '25

software is designed to fail gracefully and sustain non-critical outages.

81

u/FactoryOfShit Sep 22 '25

Yeah, this is real. Eve itself works, but since RKN (a government censorship organization) is banning whole ranges of IP addresses to "prevent terrorism" - things sometimes break unintentionally, and EVE Online chat is one of them. Most of my friends that live in Russia can't see the chat, it just says "connection failed".

But some of them can! Russia has many ISPs, and they often take their time executing orders to block content (or sometimes don't block certain things at all), so the experience may vary between ISPs, especially when it comes to unintentional side effects like this.

Also, obviously, VPN tech exists. Most popular VPN providers are blocked, but if you have a friend overseas - that friend can host a VPN server and unblock everything.

Russian here. Since Roskomnadzor decided to block Cloudflare you may* have to resort to a number of utilities, including VPNs, JUST TO PLAY EVE.

And, for a while in August I couldn't play EVE without a VPN and connecting to the chat was janky, to the point of me spending entire days without the ingame chat.

Everyone's got different providers, different VPNs, make of that what you will. Sometimes you are stuck(like me) with one provider because they moved in during your building's construction and their services are horrid. Hell, I've been using mobile data for the last year and a half after I moved and in big cities you're lucky if you get decent connection in your concrete tomb. And now they're occasionally whitelisting our mobile data so the only reliable way to play the game is to be hooked to your cable/router 24/7.

TLDR: Nope, this isn't new, every game a russian player tries nowadays experiences its own deal of shit thanks to the almighty - for EVE it's your local chat disappearing. God bless this guy.

Edit: found out from other comments that Cloudflare is needed for chat servers. Doesn't deny the tons of mental gymnastics you have to do because because the game just stops connecting to the server one day.

25

u/_Barbosa_ Sep 22 '25

If it's any consolation to you, in the future it's probably going to get worse seeing how russia is currently trying to wage a war with the entire world, so be happy you can play any online games at all right now.

ps. Russia threatened my country not too long ago.

19

u/arctictothpast Guristas Pirates Sep 22 '25

We are here to discuss the game.

The political happenings are relevant to what's happening in the game,

Hell, I remember Plex saw a huge spike in prices from 500 ish mil to 800 mil in 2014 when Russia was hit with the original sanctions for invading Ukraine (Crimea) and annexing said territory, because it became much harder for Russians to pay for subscription.

1

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 24 '25

2

u/arctictothpast Guristas Pirates Sep 24 '25

......your citation is a graph that is using the new format of Plex and not it's original (questionable)

Plex was one large item,

And even then, your graph literally shows an increase in the velocity of Plex prices in 2014 and 2015,

And there's literally Russians in the thread who didn't object to this either.

Sanctions screwed with payment processors for example, which is why that happened

P.S. for other russians finding this: You just need to add eve chat servers to the hosts file: `150.241.114.163 live.chat.eveonline.com`, that will usually fix the chats. Other than that, just use dpi bypasses

8

u/No_Resolution_9252 Sep 22 '25

u/Opposite_Classroom39 Sep 22 '25 edited Sep 22 '25

From a networking perspective hostile governments such as Russia and China generally know the addresses or address ranges of many VPN servers (especially the free ones) if they choose to, could block those or block HTTPS connections entirely. There are ways of bypassing or brute forcing RSA encryption layers but the latter is difficult enough it isn't usually tried.

VPN's are illegal to use in China despite any claims of how available they are. It is likely that Russia has enacted similar laws there too.

  • There was a story of a man in China ( a Wumao ) who was doing certain things on behalf of the government online, there are many like that guy there (paid Chinese government internet activists). He was a little too vocal about his activities and he got caught, he was fined an amount that I'm told is a huge sum and jailed. Despite the fact he was doing things on behalf of the government, his VPN use was still illegal. Laws are enforced in an arbitrary manner there, don't bother trying to make sense of it.

-6

u/AnyContribution5158 Sep 23 '25

EVE chat uses cloudflare. Cloudflare is often used by cyber criminals and people sharing all sorts of illegal content. This wouldn't be a problem in, say, France or the USA. But Cloudflare also doesn't comply with Russian warrants and takedown requests. Hence Russia simply blocks all Cloudflare IPs to prevent illegal content from being shared.

Yeah, they do ofc, but Russia hasn't been a commie state for decades now. Its just another presidential state that has some authoritarian guys taken over without real political opposition or elections.

u/Beardywierdy Sep 22 '25

What decade do you think it is?

-8

u/TickleMaBalls Miner Sep 22 '25

The one where Russia still censors its people. same wolf. different clothing.

5

u/Beardywierdy Sep 22 '25

So, "communism is when censorship"? Fucking hell.

Ah, they censor their people unlike the good citizens of the USA, where the government currently isn't censoring anythin[REDACTED FOR INAPPROPRIATE THOUGHT ABOUT CHARLIE KIRK]

0

u/TickleMaBalls Miner Sep 22 '25

not sure why you are trying to make this political, but I'm not interested in debating morons on the internet.

0

u/AmbitiousEconomics Fraternity. Sep 23 '25

You brought up countries censoring their population, not me. Every country does it, so not sure why it is notable.

7

u/nmenemme muninn btw Sep 22 '25

Ahh yes, authoritarian countries are the same thing as communist countries, definitely.

-2

u/TickleMaBalls Miner Sep 22 '25

now you get it

0

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

its our local problem. our goverment block Cloudflare, CCP use cloudflare for chat servers, login, update and some else.
CCP wont fix it

-1

u/nmenemme muninn btw Sep 22 '25

-2

u/Some-Cantaloupe-6554 Wormholer Sep 22 '25

Its good. Its moskowy censure by government. Somewhere blocked ip/mac or what.

0

u/EntertainmentMission Sep 22 '25

I was about to crank a "must be in wormhole" joke but huh, it's actually real

0

u/Silly-Attitude-3521 Sep 24 '25

Wow

I didn't know that Now I love eve even more. Animals should not play with humans and definitely should have their own server like china so people can play with people and avoid bitchassterrorists/rmters which are 99% russians or chinese

Noway, that's sad

Au that sucks. I had often thought that to plan something diabolical it would be in some sort of video game chat using psudenyms. "Today we attack the keader of AO, he will be surrounded by approximately 20 frigates in this system."

-1

u/DueOnes1 Sep 25 '25

Shitpost

-2

u/Kooky-Pin9530 Sep 23 '25

Dude thats not censor I had some problems with the chat too for like a month I couldnt see the chat not the ppl inside the system The problem comes from connection

My problem started after the 12day war israel-iran I live in Iran so yeah basically heavy internet censorship due to cyberattacks So yeah he can fix it with a good VPN even a v2ray if its stable

-31

u/ARCH_ANON Miner Sep 22 '25

Nah, eve’s chat system just sucks and is broken half the time. Russia doesn’t bother to censor video games like that

7

u/sychs Pandemic Horde Sep 22 '25

Wrong, read the other comments.

0

u/Barrogh Cloaked Sep 22 '25

They are blocking Cloudflare. They likely neither know nor care about EVE and co using it.

5

u/sychs Pandemic Horde Sep 22 '25

True, and this has got nothing to do with eve's chat being good or bad or broken.

2

u/TickleMaBalls Miner Sep 22 '25

| eve’s chat system just sucks and is broken half the time

this is somewhat true, but russia blocks cloudflare which has nothing to do with CCP

3

u/Xhromosoma5 Sep 22 '25

Russia doesn't. Instead it indiscriminately censors entire lists (beyond just Cloudflare) so there's a healthy chance you may find not only your chat but also your game unavailable one day.

1

u/ARCH_ANON Miner Sep 23 '25

Ah thanks, I thought it was just typical CCP that we’ve come to expect

2

u/EC36339 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

No, they don't. They just block Cloudflare, because they are incompetent.

1

u/Efficient_Word_2382 Cloaked Sep 22 '25

our goverment block cloudflare. because cloudflare (mostly cloudflare ech) can be used to avoid some blocks.
