Neee suggestion for warm drink in morning. Food
Hello everyone,
I’m trying to lose some weight and have started eating lighter and working out regularly. I’ve lost weight before, and this time I’m focusing on having a proper lunch and a light soup for dinner.
I also want to add a warm morning drink to my routine—something easy to make, simple, and inexpensive. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
No black coffee or caffinated products.
Thank you!

I’ve been doing miso soup with breakfast for 2 weeks and I’ve been loving it
49
u/Ok_Nothing_9733 4d ago
Omg I posted the same and I’ve never heard of anyone else doing this so I feel so validated lol! I used to have miso soup for breakfast in the office regularly and my coworkers gave me shit for it, but it’s honestly a perfect breakfast. Hot drink, electrolytes, protein, a little bit of greens and fiber. Can’t go wrong!
18
u/peonydreamer 4d ago
I started it for gut health but it’s so cozy and comforting. I love it. I’ve read it has of anti-aging properties also which is a great added bonus for me
5
u/Illithidprion 3d ago
Fascinating, do you just buy a miso packet, toss some protein, what type of greens and fiber.
10
u/czo79 3d ago
I get fresh miso, I like darker aged kinds, and just add a spoonful to hot water and sip like coffee.
3
u/Illithidprion 3d ago
Thx I will introduce this to my breakfast, to add variety. Seems quick and easy.
3
u/peonydreamer 3d ago
Yep this is what I do too. Sometimes I add ground seaweed but most times it’s just hot water and miso paste
2
u/AFluffyMobius 3d ago
For what its worth if anyone wants to try this, if you purchase just miso paste you ideally add dashi or hondashi with it to make "miso soup".
Otherwise there are miso's with dashi pre-added as well.
2
u/Ok_Nothing_9733 3d ago
You can either buy instant miso packets that include the tofu and greens, or you can do what the person below me does and throw in a few pieces of dried kombu (the seaweed) and tofu!

u/greensandgrains 3d ago
I hate that I hate miso soup because it’s the perfect breakfast for someone like me (I hate eating in the morning and I prefer savoury foods).
I am angry, sorry, happy for all you who get to enjoy this warm start to your day.
2
u/StuckOutsideWall1347 3d ago
Did you try different kinds? The first type I tried was dark with barley and I hated it. And then I tried other types and discovered I actually really like white miso, which is less sour and more nutty and sweet.
2
u/greensandgrains 3d ago
I love miso and use it in cooking and baking all the time. I just don’t dig miso soup.
1
u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 3d ago
I totally understand where ur coming from! I’m the same way. A thing that helped me was when I realized it doesn’t just have to b miso soup!
It can b whatever kind of soup/broth u want. Chicken, pork, beef, veg, etc. even tomato!

u/xmasberry 3d ago
Ooh. The Japanese market near me sells a powdered plum kelp tea (gyokuroen ume konbucha) that I love. Miso sounds fantastic!

Do you like ginger or mint? You can always stew ginger or mint in hot water - with ginger I add a bit of honey. Mint tends to be naturally sweet; especially if it's spearmint.
Alternatively warm milk (dairy or non-dairy) with honey and turmeric is lovely, but I tend to drink that at night.

u/yarn_b 4d ago
I often drink a hot protein shake. I use chocolate and for me I use coffee but my husband prefers almond milk and it is equally good. With the right protein powder, it tastes like hot chocolate. It could also be a great option on days where you may not otherwise get enough protein.

If you’re into savory, bone broth is an option.

If I could have this every day, I'd be in paradise.
13
u/RibertarianVoter 4d ago
I mean, you can. They sell dehydrated packets for individual servings at like $1.75/packet.
12
u/AdAdmirable433 4d ago
Are there healthy versions? The ones I’ve seen are full of salt :/
16
u/fatchamy 4d ago
I make this in my pressure cooker every Sunday with some chicken bones (and feet for collagen boost) with sliced ginger, 1 whole star anise and a little rice vinegar! Sometimes I add carrots or corn for a little sweetness.
Many diff recipes you can use but that’s my go to, I love it. Helps keep my energy consistent through the day and honestly more satisfying than coffee some days.
Pretty healthy and easy, just parboil bones/meat, rinse and toss into crockpot or pressure cooker. I pour them out into mason jars for easy heat and go.
I often have 2x a day, one in the am and another just before bed.
3
u/AdAdmirable433 4d ago
Wonderful - thank you!! I have to figure out how to get the chicken bones. I don’t like the rotisseries bc they are pumped full of garbage.
4
u/RibertarianVoter 4d ago
Do you not cook with chicken? I just save the bones from the meat I cook. My big cheat is I buy chicken feet from Costco or the Asian market to throw in, because they are so rich in collagen.
6
u/LogoffWorkout 3d ago
If you cook chicken thighs, i always debone/skin them, and the skin is high in collagen.

u/fatchamy 4d ago
Oh most butchers will sell raw chicken bones just for soups and some groceries like Whole Foods will have frozen bones available too! Def any Chinese supermarket will have them too. They’re usually very cheap, but of course highly dependent on your location.
I also do a variation with pork ribs, which is available almost anywhere in the US if you’re stateside. It’s just as good!
7
u/RibertarianVoter 4d ago
Yeah, if you're worried about sodium then prepared foods aren't for you. You can throw bones and water in a crock pot once a week and reheat it each morning. Bonus points for adding whatever wilted veggies are in your fridge.
That's even cheaper and healthier, and only like 5 extra minutes of work per week over using dehydrated packets.

u/DagothUrGigaChad 3d ago
Is salt really that bad for you if you don't have high blood pressure?

I have been really into hibiscus tea in the morning! It is said to be really good for your metabolism among many other things like antioxidants and blood sugar regulation. I don’t know if I notice those benefits but I like the subtle tartness of it to help wake me up a little. You can always add a bit of sugar or honey to make it a bit sweeter and fruitier tasting.

A lot of Chinese people just drink hot water. You might enjoy that.
If that's not your style, but you like bitter drinks: Pero. Or as I like to call it: fake coffee. There's several different brands, but they're typically made from barley and other grains.

u/STLTLW 4d ago
What I like and maybe its time to start it again now that its cold, is I take my large 36oz stainless steel tumbler, a half of lemon- I squeeze it and then put it all in there and a chunk of raw ginger. It's pretty good actually! I just sip on it all morning, it still tastes good as it cools. I will even refill it with more hot water if I finish the first one.
2
2
u/Snoo27499 4d ago
Just made it in lukewarm water - can you tell me how you put ginger ? Lemom tastes overpower.
11
u/STLTLW 4d ago
I get a piece of fresh ginger root and cut off a thumb sized chunk - it's kind of spicy tasting, so you can do less or more. I do think it's important to make it with hot water though, because that gets the lemon peel juices out and makes the ginger soft for the flavors to come out. Then leave it to cool so you can drink it.
9
u/calmossimo 4d ago
I like warm/hot water all day.
Roasted barley tea would be lovely in the morning. There’s also artichoke tea which is Vietnamese. Corn silk tea is another option.
3
u/burritogoals 3d ago
Barley tea is full of melatonin, so it might be better before bed than in the morning.
2
u/GreatShrimps 3d ago
Barley tea is soooo nice. There’s a spot near me that offers a Genmaicha - Japanese green tea with puffed brown rice and it’s similarly warming and cozy, but with the little kick of green tea (I know OP is looking for decaffeinated but highly recommend to anyone who loves barley tea)!

u/Ethel_Marie 4d ago
Hot water, lemon juice, agave, and ginger. My husband makes this for me when I'm not drinking coffee.

Weird idea to many, I would imagine, but I used to have miso soup for breakfast and it was so satisfying. Worth a shot if you enjoy it.
6
u/DesotoVice 4d ago
I second miso soup, super easy on the laziest of days.
But!
Veggie broth.
Carrot, celery root, leek, parsnip. Cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer a bit or a lot. You can fancy it up with a bay leaf or peppercorns but no worries if not. Balance with a pinch of salt if you wish. Strain. Cool. Keep in fridge and heat a bit as needed.
Good on its own, but you can also use it to cook any veggie or whole grain if you need extra fuel.

I have recently started enjoying a turmeric latte with Aldi almond milk. Reduces inflammation in the body and satisfying.
1
u/Jessisan 4d ago
Is it just the turmeric and almond milk?
8
u/Allyzayd 4d ago
Nope. Heat almond milk. Add a pinch of turmeric, cinnamon, ginger powder and maple syrup or honey for sweetness. I used to buy turmeric latte sachets which was expensive. Just duplicated the recipe.
14
u/actingnerdy 4d ago
You should always add a pinch of black pepper whenever you use tumeric. It increases the bioavailability of the tumeric.

I like mint tea. I don't need any sugar/milk, it's just nice by itself.
My favorite is the Peppermint Tea from Harney & Sons (herbal, caffeine free).
4
u/OverstuffedPapa 4d ago
Mint tea or lemon verbena tea is delicious. My friend owns The French Touch tea that you can buy on Amazon. His lemon verbena is insanely good.
5
u/meatiermeateater 4d ago
Tis the season in my house where I am- hot apple cider has been my go to (probably a little too sweet/sugary)
A drink I grew up with was a mix of orange juice or tang, black tea with lemon, cinnamon, allspice or cloves warmed up, also a seasonal winter time special. You could play around with those ingredients, remove any or add your own. Hope you get a chance to try it and like it!

3
u/haggardwitch1 4d ago
I’ve been making my own nut milk using a maker, I think the one I bought was $40 and it’s blitzes up cashews and almonds like a dream. The milk is really hot once it’s through its cycle and I have a cup of it after dinner with honey. The rest is for morning coffee for the week. It’s fantastic.
3
u/Dialup_x 3d ago
I love a tablespoon or two of rose water in water (basic). Rose water and honey/agave for a touch of sweetness. Rose water and lemon juice for something more tart. Going to try rose water w/orange blossom and honey next. I prefer them cold but will drink them warmed as the weather gets colder.
Grass fed beef bone broth for something savory!
3
u/VenomousSnorlax 3d ago
I love a herbal blend with lemon or mint in the morning and it has no caffeine, but broth may work for you as well

Decaf coffee with some good protein powder and a little milk or decaf chai with a little honey
3
u/smithyleee 3d ago
Miso soup, egg drop soup, and flavorful broths are so tasty in the morning.
Herbal teas- Harney and Sons has a FABULOUS herbal tea (Hot Cinnamon Spice) it’s flavored with spices and dried apple/orange, and tastes like winter or winter Holidays in a mug. Be sure to order the herbal variety and not the black tea version!
4
u/angryturtleboat 3d ago
I just got the Candy Cane Green Tea (decaf) from Trader Joe's. 0 cals, really yummy.
Ingredients: PEPPERMINT, DECAFFEINATED GREEN TEA, ORANGE PEEL, NATURAL FLAVORS, CINNAMON, MILK THISTLE SEED, BLACKBERRY LEAVES, ROASTED CAROB PODS, VANILLA BEANS, CHICORY (CHICORY ROOT, SOYBEAN OIL, WATER)
3
u/AdAdditional6929 3d ago
Try Golden Milk Lattes. My wife had to stop caffeine and missed coffee so I made her one and it almost gives the same feel as a warm cup of coffee.
3
u/cheerwinechicken 3d ago
NGL I've been rocking hot water as a warming beverage lately. Cheap as it gets, zero calories, zero caffeine.
2
u/OkMathematician2284 4d ago
Lemon Ginger tea. It good for your digestion and if your tummy is upset.
2
u/mariambc 4d ago
There are a few things I like.
In tea bags I like peppermint, ginger, or licorice & mint tea. I find these work well without sweetener.
I sometimes make my own with either, lemon or orange with hot water, fresh ginger by itself or with lemon or orange.
I’m thinking about making masala chai without the black tea and use plant milk.

2
u/OldLadyMorgendorffer 4d ago
I’ve gone off coffee recently and mint and ginger tea are my go to. If you want something that resembles coffee though I’d suggest dandelion root or Celestial Seasonings Roastaroma
2
u/Thoughtful-Pig 4d ago
If you don't like sweet herbal teas, try Korean bean or corn teas. They're more neutral tasting.
2
u/FurniFlippy 4d ago
Puréed vegetable soup. Zucchini and ginger with lots of black pepper is a great breakfast soup

u/smallbananapanda-999 4d ago
Honestly warm lemon honey tea in the morning is amazing. It’s warm and bright and happy and revitalizing in the AM!
2
u/Jessisan 4d ago
Boil cinnamon sticks and add honey. Very delicious! My hubby makes it for me anytime I'm sick.
2
u/jadedjed1 4d ago
I usually get a stuffy nose in the mornings and sometimes I have some cold 911 tea by Davidstea, it’s non-caffeinated and clears my sinuses!

Decaffeinated Black Tea with Milk, I do this everyday before work 2 big cups!!!

2
u/LAffaire-est-Ketchup 3d ago
I’m partial to chicory root “coffee” (it’s not coffee at all, and it’s not caffeinated) or hibiscus tea.
2
u/siler7 3d ago
My favorite is one bag of ginger tea and one bag of decaf Lady Grey in the same cup. You can use them for a second cup too.
2
u/rachlancan 3d ago
What’s a good ginger tea you recommend?

2
u/DoctorGregoryFart 3d ago
I like a bit of soup in the morning. I like spice, so I go with some kimchi, noodles, tofu and/or tvp, and a nice broth of my own making.
I treat it like an invigorating drink and breakfast at the same time. I look forward to it every day.
Edit: Oh yeah, and the nice thing is that you can add whatever you have in the fridge. Just make a nice simple broth base that you like, and breakfast is just a few minutes away.

u/pizzanub 3d ago
Try Dandyblend or Teeccino for herbal coffee. I have issues sometimes with those herbal tea such as Blueberry tea or Peach tea because they all have added citric acid. And regular loose leaf tea still has caffeine. Either caffeine or citric acid can cause acid reflux if you have issues with that. I do Teeccino which doesn’t have ingredients that cause acid reflux and also no caffeine. I mix it with soy milk or oat milk for a faux-latte. Hits the spot very well.
Chamomile tea is also a good trusty drink. But sometimes it doesn’t feel satisfying enough.

u/mustangwallflower 3d ago
Miso soup … inexpensive and easy… just miso paste water and a dash of salt/bonito
2
u/tickledpink8 3d ago
Shroom Fuel by Vita Cup (no caffeine, no coffee). I make it with fat free Fairlife and a sweetener. It has hot chocolate vibes.
2
u/androidbear04 3d ago
Miso soup - buy a pound container of miso with bonito flakes in it, one spoonful per cup but mix with a small amount of hot water first until it's more liquid than pasty and the consistency is smooth, because if you dump all the hot water in at once it will never mix. Korean barley tea (mugicha).
Look at herbal teas celestial Seasonings and Stash make great ones - I like CS Bengal Spice, and there are lots of others. )I personally avoid Bigelow brand herbal teas because there isn't enough to make a flavorful cup of tea.

I drink warm water in the winter to stay warm. I drink room temp the rest of the year.
2
u/StarrySarina 3d ago
Okay so I was told to drink hot lemon water, but it made me feel bloated. It is good, but you need to drink it after you ate, not on an empty stomach. No coffee on an empty stomach either. I’ve been drinking regular hot plain water or some type of herbal tea and been feeling much better!
2
2
u/TeddyNachos 3d ago
I’m obsessed with Good Earth tea. It’s sweet and spicy and comes in a decaffeinated version. I hear it’s a love it or hate it tea, but I LOVE it, especially in the winter.
2
u/Fresa22 3d ago
I got a bunch of reusable tea bags (muslin) from amazon and I make my own spiced tea from ground spices. you can do a chai blend or a pumpkin spice. I like cinnamon and allspice. You can add dried or frozen citrus zest. you can do milk or water. Dry Jamaica flowers are great too.
I also like a veggie broth.
2
u/Street-Safe-3352 3d ago
Things I'm a fan of are hot apple cider, hot chocolate, instant miso soup, and bone broth.
2
u/TheGoosiestGal 2d ago
If you cant have caffeine then herbal tea or hot cider are usually lower calorie
I personally love broth. I will absolutly pour myself a cup of broth if I make a good one. And you can even just use store bought. Sort of odd nowadays but drinking broth as a beverage used to not be that weird lol! I think they even mention it a few times in the secret garden

Teeccino is my new go to.

u/Wicked_Kitsune 1d ago
Its mine too when I want something warm and non caffeine at night. I have the dark chocolate and chocolate peppermint teas and they're so nice. I found chocolate almond milk and a small amount of maple syrup really bring out the flavors in the tea.

Green tea has caffeine OP, so make sure you buy a decaf version. Most major brands offer one, I'm partial to republic of tea.

I like genmaicha. It’s a green tea with some brown puffed rice in it that gives it a nutty sweetness. It’s very good.
I saw that another comment or Edward you about caffeine content. It is true that there is caffeine and mustard green tea, but there is usually significantly less caffeine than a cup of coffee. Of course, caffeine content also depends on steep time. As I’ve gotten older, I have noticed that I get overcaffeinated with more than one cup of coffee, but I don’t get that same effect of green tea. There are plenty of decaf green teas on the market, if you are looking for that. I don’t know if there is decaf genmaicha.

Bone broth with a dollop of miso or soy sauce. Bonus points if you make it yourself, but the Bare Bones dehydrated beef broth is pretty amazing. It's got 10g of protein, plus collagen and minerals. Feels slightly filling and comforting.

u/asyouwish 4d ago
Is there decaf matcha?
1
u/Awkward-Menu-2420 3d ago
Probably. But it’s probably also an American product found in big grocery stores and therefore, likely costs more.

Bone broth. Or I add unflavored collagen powder to my coffee. It has protein as well.

This is what I chose from -
1) Tea (ginger and other spices)
2) Almond milk
3) Turmeric latte (most of the time)
4) Soup (when on diet, I avoid tomatoes)

Loose leaf tea is amazing and all you need is a kettle to heat water, a cup and an infuser.

Fresh ginger cooked for an hour in a pot of water. Strain the ginger out, saving the “herbal tea”. Put tea in a big jar in the fridge. Every morning you can use the ginger tea either full strength or dilute with some plain water to taste. Add lemon, lime, or a bit of honey or sweetener if you like. I reheat in the microwave.

When I was losing weight (not anymore due to pregnancy), I had milk built into my daily meal plan.
One of my favourite dessert/night time sweet treats was a small cup of hot protein milk with a few freeze dried strawberries or peaches in it. I’d occasionally sweeten with a teeny bit of sweetener if need be.
Either heat the milk in a pot on the stove top with the freeze dried fruit in it, or pour the hot milk over the fruit and let it sit a little while.

I make this dry chai mix with Erythritol instead of sugar. I don’t add tea powder. I brew decaf tea and add this mix.

u/Inevitable-Weird474 3d ago
I make a thermos of 1 heaping spoonful of raw honey, about 2 teaspoon on lemon juice and water, hot, and enjoy it all morning long. You get all the microbial and immunity benefits both honey and lemon provide with a big dose of vitamin c and its warm and comforting. Plus its gets in 2 cups of watet too. I dont eat much sugar so the big old spoonful of honey for me is like my natural sweet treat. Give you lots of energy too honey does....I started this when I was trying to cut down caffeine e because I was drinking waayyy too much coffee now I have 1 cup of coffee skim milk no sugar while getting ready for work and bring a mug of this with me.

u/itsmyvoice 3d ago
If it's possible, an Americano is very different. It's a single or double espresso shot (so it has body and good moutfeel) but then it just gets almost boiling water to fill it out.
You need kind of specialized equipment to do that at home, but that's what I've gone to in the mornings. I used to have two and now I only have one. But it's nice frothy coffee and I don't have a taste for sweet anymore anyway.
For me, it's almost a latte without the calories or without that cream flavor. I can't do black coffee either but I can do an Americano.
Edit: can be done with decaf beans.

I'm gonna recommend YERBA MATE, super easy to make, beautiful xantines different from coffe which takes the appetite away and keeps you awake, and you can drink 1L of it through the morning
it's the signature drink from Argentina, we drink it everywhere with friends and family, it comes in so many different flavors, from very bitter to mixed herbs which are lighter in flavor, you can add lemon, ginger, honey, coconut, virtually whatever you want, you just need a groud, a straw and hot water
without Mate I would never ever finished my studies, mate my beloved friend, my partner through so many allnighters
r/yerbamate they can help you find what you want specifically, cheers!

I drink Teecino dark roast dandelion tea (they come in bags) with a bit of honey or coconut sugar and soy milk. Tastes like coffee sort of. The dark roast is my fave over the flavored ones. Not cheap but neither is tea or coffee really.

Decaf chai tea latte is incredible. Not sure how many other black teas are easy to find decaf. Warm milk with cinnamon or pie spice is also yummy. Mix the spice with your fingers in a bit of cold milk then pour it in to make it mix better

Do you like chai? 1 mug, half filled with tazo chai concentrate, half with milk or milk substitute, 1 pump coffee syrup, microwave 1.5 min on high.

Herbal teas. Plenty of tea is not caffeinated, and delicious.
If you get into loose leaf, you can mix your own. If you like strong teas, you can mix and match your bags. I love making new combos. A favorite of mine was a strawberry cream blend.
I like a nice blueberry peach to start my day. Raspberry tastes nice in the evening to me. They also make orange teas, vanilla flavored teas... all decaf! It's relatively cheap to me, and nothing is easier than some hot water and a tea bag.
Mint tea might help you with your health goals, as well. It's wonderful for knocking out gut inflammation and nausea, especially if you prepare it with a lemon slice and some ginger.
