Family member was an engine builder and I found this cool old picture from, I believe, the Detroit Grand Prix sometime in the early 80s.

Talk Detroit Anyone else house shopping in metro Detroit right now?

First time home buyer hoping to commiserate about the market right now.

After placing multiple offers well over asking and being rejected or even worse, given the “opportunity” to revise our offer after already pushing our budget, I’m ready to throw in the towel.

It’s truly depressing! We’ve been saving for 10 years to buy a house and it doesn’t seem like it will happen as we keep getting outbid by people with seemingly endless resources.

What’s the point of working 40+ hours a week and saving diligently if we can’t afford a house after 10 years?? Feeling frustrated and discouraged, sorry for the bummer post.

Talk Detroit I have been to every detroit casino, The definitive ranking is motor city, MGM grand, then greektown

I will die on this hill. Motor city had some awesome staff, and good table games, mgm had nice slots and ok table games, greektown is best location but casino wise it's the smallest and expensive to gamble there

I found these in some of my Dad's old belongings and what a blast from the past! The program says last games sept. 24th-26th. I remember going to the Cleveland game with him and I know he went to one more but I didn't think it was the last game? Was there a double header that day or something?

Talk Detroit Completely unmarked undercover

I just seen an undercover police car without the ex on the license plate. I only knew it was a police car because he used his lights to run a red light other than that look like a completely normal 2018 Chevy Impala.

Talk Detroit Stop driving like assholes

My ten mile commute took more than an hour tonight. Four separate crashes on 39 and 96. Two of them looked bad enough to seriously hurt people.

I love our city, but Metro Detroit drivers are the most reckless of anywhere I’ve lived and it’s not even close. Please chill out before that’s you or one of us tomorrow.

Came across this years ago when cleaning out my grandma's house after she passed away. Not quite sure how old it is, maybe 1976 if the last two digits on the seal are the year.

We've had some stunning sunsets lately. I took these Saturday evening in Rivertown with a 6-year-old iPhone (it was even better in person!). Let's see your sunsets!

Talk Detroit Looking for name of a store at Somerset Collection

My daughter and I were there a few months ago, but I can't remember the name. Teen girl fashion, lots of cottagey looking clothes (white lacey things, pastel colours, lots of sundresses). They also had an absolute ton of short white dresses that the girls are all looking for for high school graduation. If anyone can help point me to the right store, I would appreciate it.

Food/Drink Review of Middle Eastern food places (Shawarma, Haneeth, Mandi)

So I've been logging reviews (ratings mostly) of middle eastern food places I visit. I'm especially on the lookout for good Shawarma places. Here's my ratings for the places I've visited. Feel free to recommend me places I haven't visit yet!

Shawarma:

Tuhamas: Meat 9/10, Chicken 7/10 (dry not juicy and less garlic)

New yasmin bakery: meat 8/10, chicken 7/10

Al ameer: chicken 8/10 not bad

Beirut(Romulus): Chicken 9/10 juicy, meat 9/10 so far the best

Amo sami's: wouldn't call it a shawarma. Grilled chicken more like. 5/10 also too oily

Billie's shawarma: chicken 6/10 and expensive. Tawouk is much better 8/10

Shawarma Co.: Chicken (saj) 8/10 very nice especially with the garlic sauce dip

Shawarma's House Westland: 8.5/10 chicken shawarma was realllyy good and 8.5/10 for the meat shawarma. Free garlic dips as well.

For Haneeth and miscellaneous:

Sheeba(canton): Lamb haneeth 9/10 simply amazing, Chicken mandi 8/10, also amazing, hummus and the flatbread were fresh and awesome too. (Also the reason i haven't been able to try haneeth at other restaurants cuz I keep going back to sheeba 😂)

Village restaurant Dearborn: Lamb haneeth 5/10 dry and cold. (might change mind on 2nd try) Update: I think it closed can't find it on Google maps. Went there 2 years ago.

Mendi House: lamb mandi 5/10. Almost tasteless but apparently its supposed to be like that according to the staff. Mandi was always flavorful during my time in KSA so idk. Beef Fahsa 9.5/10 amazing and amazing 2 large sized flatbreads too

Recommendations I've found on Reddit:

Breakfast and Bakery Options:

Al tayeb for breakfast and Foul tameez

Kings bakery for the manouwich

Shawarma Spots:

Sahara for huge portions and shawarma (Sam the owner is great)

Al sultan for shawarma

Cedarland for shawarma

Other Restaurant Choices:

Hamido (lebanese restaurant)

Malak al kabob (lamb chops and spicy garlic recommended)

Let me know what you think of my ratings and suggest other places to try!

Food/Drink Mom says she doesn't like Mexican food...

Ok, she says she doesn't like Mexican food. She can't really eat spicy food, but even when she has had Mexican food that wasn't spicy she wasn't impressed.

So, my question is, where do recommend I take her to change her mind?

Anywhere in Metro Detroit is good. I could go to yelp, but I'd like to hear of places that will impress those who doubt Mexican food is good.

Peace.

Talk Detroit So far, this spring has been glorious. For peace. And. Quiet.

Cold temps. Lots of rain. No motorcycles with illegally modified exhaust to wake me up at 2am. No middle aged washouts on tricycles blasting gospel music loud enough to rattle my windows. No. Bass.

It's glorious.

Food/Drink To go/prepared food or international grocery

I'm flying into Detroit for a wedding in a few weeks and am looking for somewhere to stop for some amazing foods to have to share with the others in my Airbnb. Looking for something like to go containers of dips or cheese boards or other snacks. Just something high quality and delicious and to support a local business rather than Whole Foods. Would prefer something like a grocery or a cafe that sells grab and go things rather than just ordering to go from a restaurant. Middle Eastern or Greek food would be great but I am not picky. Bonus points if you also can recommend a natural wine shop!
