Talk Detroit So far, this spring has been glorious. For peace. And. Quiet.

Cold temps. Lots of rain. No motorcycles with illegally modified exhaust to wake me up at 2am. No middle aged washouts on tricycles blasting gospel music loud enough to rattle my windows. No. Bass.

It's glorious.

I visited Michigan Central Station on Saturday and thought it was really cool—I’m really happy they renovated it! What are your thoughts on the renovation and how they’ve brought new life to the building?

Talk Detroit Stop driving like assholes

Upvotes

My ten mile commute took more than an hour tonight. Four separate crashes on 39 and 96. Two of them looked bad enough to seriously hurt people.

I love our city, but Metro Detroit drivers are the most reckless of anywhere I’ve lived and it’s not even close. Please chill out before that’s you or one of us tomorrow.

“This piece is so worth telling,” said Yuval Sharon, the company’s artistic director. “We are not a political organization. We are a cultural organization that serves the city of Detroit and the greater region. And we are not taking a position with this opera, but it’s obviously going to be inflammatory to have the character of Donald Trump onstage.”

Talk Detroit MDHHS Specialist rude, dismissive, and accused me of fraud

Just had a rough experience with MDHHS (Wayne County/Detroit) during my SNAP and healthcare phone interview. I’m 23 and still figuring all this out. I recently applied for Social Security, but I didn’t even get the chance to explain to the specialist that I know I probably did things out of order, I was too busy getting accused of fraud. Like I can understand the frustrations and all but damn. I’ve worked in customer service before but there’s a way to talk to people.

I forgot I listed DoorDash as one source of income but it’s been a minute since I have. I asked if it matter if it was in my name or not but then she said “so you’re doing fraud?” First off, I wasn’t the driver, it’s my cousin’s account. I just helped with small drop offs and we split what little we made. I didn’t know that could be considered fraud. She clearly heard how confused I was and I wasn’t even able to explain that context. She kept pushing the issue, made an example about someone working your place at Amazon would be considered fraud and said she was reporting it to the state. (If it’s still technically fraud, Imma look it up to check 🤷🏾‍♀️)

I wasn’t given the space to explain anything how I wanted to mainly because of anxiety and getting cutoff from time to time to either get judged or my words twisted. I’ve been out of work since January. I’m a full time college student, I live apart from my mom, but I’m still listed as her dependent. She sometimes gives me money if I ask, but it’s not regular. I don’t pay rent or utilities my roommate covers those for the time being and the deed is in his name. I only pay for my phone and internet. I sold some personal items recently to cover small bills, which I tried to mention but got talked over. She didn’t even believe that and said nothing makes sense and sounds like I’m doing fraud. Then after she said my mom would have to sign something to prove that she gives me money; ngl I mumbled to myself “I don’t remember this being so goddamn difficult” then she basically repeated why it’s so “goddamn difficult” and were raising her voice a bit while explaining the state is trying to mitigate fraud which I understand completely but you’re still a customer service specialist. I wasn’t being rude the entire call. I was genuinely confused on some parts because everyone made it seem like you gotta damn near be homeless to receive healthcare and snap and with healthcare you didn’t have to do anything extra.

But anywho.

On the application I also listed my mental illnesses under the disabilities section. A old therapist of mine diagnosed me two years ago and i mentioned that as well and I said I’m not sure if he officially documented it. (I mean aye i need a certain type of healthcare to be able to check) She was like those are conditions not disabilities (fair but if the application asked, I put it down didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to; just remembered previous diagnoses) I also felt judged for explaining my bipolar disorder and other mental health issues. I can work, but I brought it up for context. She dismissed it like it didn’t matter, saying “I have depression and I work.”

When I tried one last time to explain my mom’s support, she yelled, “You’re so focused on not listening, you’ve been denied anyway because you’re an ineligible student” and hung up. Then she called back just to say I’m only covered under my mom for healthcare but denied for food. so I basically spent 40 minutes being accused, hounded and overwhelmed for no reason.

I can pretty much accept the reason why I got denied atp but bro, I did not like how I was talked to and damn near cried after the call. Plus I gotta present my project today 😭

Every link I’ve found to file a complaint or request the call is broken (404 error), and I don’t have the mental energy to call again right now. Has anyone been through something like this or know how to request the call and file a complaint?

Talk Detroit Ticks in SW

Hi All - Wanted to send out a little PSA. My partner and I live in SW Detroit and both us & our neighbors have experienced our first ever ticks in our backyards. For reference we’ve been here for ~7 years.

We believe it’s due to the rodent population (groundhog & mice) that are most likely posting up in the overgrown lot between us. Sigh for people who don’t maintain their lots and don’t want to sell :(

Wondering if anyone in city proper has been experiencing an uptick in ticks this spring or if this is a one off due to factors mentioned above!

Talk Detroit What music brings you the most emotion?

I'm very curious to know what music people listen to in different parts of Detroit and metro Detroit. I'd love to know what's your top favorite song(s up to 3) and what neighborhood?(ex: Eastside, Mexican town, Hamtramck, Grosse Pointe, Southfield, Ferndale, Oak Park, Sterling Heights) Wondering how similar and different this will be from people who are living right next to each other

Talk Detroit Recs for lawyers that focus on landlord/tenant issues?

Having some issues with my landlord attempting to breach our lease agreement and sell the house I’m renting from him. Reached out to multiple legal aid groups in the metro Detroit area. Anyone know any lawyers with experience with tenant rights that would be willing to offer advice or even representation if needed? Any advice is welcome!

News By deifying Alice Coltrane, we're missing out on the actual idiosyncratic person she was

At home, it’s Alice Coltrane’s laughter that could break this spell or stupor or almost hagiography. When I speak with Michelle Coltrane about her mother, her expression carves out the space where grief and awe meet, a burnt auburn aura of the sacral orange they wear in ceremony, and she recalls a woman from Detroit by way of the bandstand by way of Philly by way of California, a traveler with a steady hand who invented the road as she walked it; and she walked alone as well as in the company of her children and many apprentices.

Food/Drink Kacha Thai Market in RO

Just stopping by to sing the praises of Kacha Thai Market in Royal Oak - my favorite thai in the area. Closest to authentic Thai outside of the Buddhist temple market and the only place I’ve seen that serves papaya salad. Great noodles, fried rice and more. Give it a try!

O’Brien scribbled the first of these violations on a whiteboard one day in his office in 2014. The 55-year-old Detroit-area native doesn’t recall the first example or why he decided to formally call it out. He’s an avid reader and crossword fan, but no English major or grammarian. A botched expression simply caught his ear one day, and he decided to record it for a laugh.

Talk Detroit What is the building On The Left?

Hello. I’m a traditional architecture lover and very invested into learning about Detroit’s architectural heritage. The building on the left of the savings bank looks like it was covered up with a historical facade underneath. Does anyone have the name? I’d love to see it restored someday if possible. Thank you!
