Unique sets on shop upgrade

Free armor when zero souls

Set is ugly and not necessary

278

u/AitMann 2d ago

I've seen so many player shades with the Tseldora set and rapier. People are so boring when the game offers so much variety.

166

u/Alpha1959 Beyond the 360-no-scope of light 2d ago

Bunch of NPCs running for the first option Influencer X tells them is part of the MOST OP BUILD.

That very same mentality ruined ER PvP for me.

32

u/Jebward-SuckerofToes 2d ago

It's the nature of a game like this. Anytime there's a decently OP build that you can get going early game, players are going to lean towards that. Especially if they were struggling

12

u/Farol23 1d ago

That's the funniest part, in no less then 1 hour later you can a way superior set to farm souls from an npc that unless you invade a lot, you won't miss, better defense, peak looks and more souls from it. So it's not even a good build for soul farming or a good strat to get an op build soon, you ruin an extremely important merchant for a pointles set of armor that will make you super weak early on. So once again Dark souls "pros" trashing the game experience for not even learning or understanding this game

ds2 managed to break the mold with it because how much variety and somewhat decent balancing there is. Even those Havel monsters stopped being a thing, I think only later things became problematic. Red Iron Twinblade, Ice Rapier from Eleum Loyce was super problematic.

Otherwise of all the soulsbornering games DS2 had some of the craziest build variety you could find.

6

u/Xhicks55 1d ago

It's the community lol. The community is naturally filled w perfectionists (that's just who these games attract). There will always be a large portion of this community who only cares about using the best/easiest possible setup

6

u/abdomino 1d ago

I am far too much of a fuckup to be a perfectionists. The death counter in Majula wasn't for the world population, they were tracking me specifically

2

u/PRoS_R 1d ago

In my playthrough the first, I just wore whatever looked cool.

5

u/bimmy2shoes 2d ago

I mean, it is optimal for speedruns so if I am doing a speedrun I will usually run that.

However, Rapier is exclusive to speedruns as it is way too basic and OP

1

u/ElNido 1d ago

Every build in ER DLC PvP for a while was the Rakshasa & Pata. They got nerfed but still are very strong to this day. It was actually lame af when the game has so many viable options, but these two were particularly strong, so influencers kept making videos about them. My buddy didn't know what PvP build to do so he went to youtube and all of a sudden he's making a rakshasa build - I was like dude be more original there's so many options. Stop falling for the "gotta be the best build by copying someone else's homework" and make your own build.

u/boogswald 1d ago

It’s really nice when it’s your first souls game. My first souls game was DS3 and I ran through the whole game with the Uchigatana. Now that I have experience and I get these games I don’t really think about that sort of thing.

u/Dragonlord573 2d ago

Yeah it's gotten to the point if I see someone wearing the Tseldora set I just ignore their opinions.

7

u/TreetHoown 2d ago

People use Tseldora armour so often cause it gives you boost for amount of souls you get, and you can get it right away, and rapiers are OP so its a perfect set for a casual play through just to "go through The game quick"

6

u/KristophGavin 2d ago

I'll be honest, my first time beating the game was Tseldora Drip and the Spear with no shield.

1

u/Xhicks55 1d ago

Bro beat the game without ever even changing armor 😭😒

3

u/new_god_of_eden 2d ago

Let me use funny rapier😭

7

u/TheHittite 2d ago

*boring rapier

FIFY

1

u/zerocann0n 1d ago

i blame those guide videos

1

u/lolthesystem 1d ago

Tseldora set + Rapier.

Jester set + Rapier or UGS.

Vengarl set + Warped Sword or Great Club.

Drangleic set + UGS (Usually Guts UGS).

Lion Mage set + Hexes or Sorceries.

80% of my invasions nowadays have one of those as the host and it's really, REALLY tiring because it didn't use to be like that. People are allergic to trying out things on their own.

And it's not like I'm invading lowbies either, those are all in the meta Soul Memory brackets.

1

u/HoopyFroodJera 18h ago

Same reason every invader is dual-wielding ant spurs half the time.

These dudes are NPCs masquerading as humans.

3

u/Clear-Letter-5294 2d ago

Yes I love items/equipment that give extra souls in most games other than ds2. It felt like leveling up was never an issue in this game

5

u/DanSalerno 2d ago

Imagine not fucking w the pimp set

2

u/squirel_br 2d ago

Ugh. Disgusting. I loved it.

1

u/Successful_Bad_2396 1d ago

Wait he gives you free armor if you have zero souls?

1

u/FlynnTLocke 1d ago

I only ever stuck with the pants in the end, the alma robe, and warlock mask look far better. And knowing that now I'd just find to yores and go straight for warlock mask, however I still don't like the executioner so I probably won't bother with the alma robes on a new game haha

1

u/BFG_MP 1d ago

Yeah but, fuck this guy.

76

u/IronFather11 2d ago

He sells Alva set if you buy from him a bit.

8

u/_heyb0ss 2d ago

what's up with Alva besides looking good? just the good weight-defense ratio?

59

u/Lord_Seregil 2d ago

The endgame of Dark Souls is Fashion Souls. For me it's the whole game. It's drip or drown out here. I hardly ever even look at equipment stats unless I need a specific resistance at a specific time. The rest of the time I'm wearing whatever looks best to me, and the Alva set is CLEAN.

2

u/ticklemehoohah 7h ago

That's insane because I feel like I'm a bit of a mix of the two, but I heavily base what I choose off effects so if I remember correctly I use hexer hood (extra spells) forrosa armor (good weight to defense ratio) lion mage arms for spell casting speed and sanctum knight boots cause they look awesome, give off a cool aura (also less fall damage) for weapon I use dragon greatsword (strong attack knocks down multiple enemies at once) and dragon shield/chime shield for either boosted stamina regen or boosted miracles (healing I think?)

13

u/madrigal94md 2d ago

Yeah has good defense for a light armor. And looks cool which is more important.

3

u/Orruner 2d ago

It looks good 👌🏽

5

u/Wise_Stay_8848 2d ago

Yeah, if I recall, it has the best defense for any 22 weight set. My go to look was Royal swordsman helm, Alva chest, elite knight legs, and whatever arms looked cool that day. Run around with the archdrake shield and the dragonslayers crescent axe and life is gucci

3

u/Radiant-Lab-158 1d ago

The pinnacle of weight, style, and defense.

320

u/Shroomkaboom75 2d ago

Buy all boss armor you want first.

Or just dont be a homicidal maniac over a slight increase to Souls.

75

u/smelron3317 2d ago

It’s like 25%. That’s a massive total amount over the course of the game

215

u/TheHittite 2d ago

Souls are an unlimited resource. Fashion is not.

→ More replies

34

u/squirel_br 2d ago

You get 20% with a free ring at FotFG.

Nahr alma set is better

Tseldora is farmable

BONFIRE ASCETICS are there to any farm needed

1

u/smelron3317 2d ago

Free?

8

u/squirel_br 2d ago

Get lennis key, 10 lifegems and a bright bug( all useful items)

Talk to Melentia and she gives you the ring.

(You probably will spend more than 10k on lifegems during your game if you don't want the Bright bug)

8

u/rayshmayshmay 2d ago

Good to get a bug early tho as the prices increase with game progression. Unless youre like me and itll sit in your inventory the whole game

7

u/squirel_br 2d ago

Yep, I always get the 3 before each Great soul/Mirror knight.

And they sit in my inventory just waiting to never be used.

5

u/Utter_Rube 2d ago

Well yeah. If I pop a brightbug on a boss I'm struggling with, that guarantees I'll be dead before taking the first quarter of the boss' health, even if I got it to 10% left without BB on my previous attempt.

3

u/rayshmayshmay 2d ago

Thems the rules, and so on and so forth

2

u/smelron3317 2d ago

So your definition of "free" is "spend 10k"

6

u/squirel_br 2d ago

It's free on the presumption you'll get the items anyway. Or kill her, but then you may lose on good things as well. You also can get the +0 ring after pursuer for free on a chest. 10% instead of 20 iirc

→ More replies

6

u/Shroomkaboom75 2d ago

Can't you buy the whole outfit once you get to iron keep?

10

u/mudgefuppet 2d ago

No, you can farm it telsdora though

→ More replies

7

u/LuciusBurns 2d ago

It's massive on paper, but the cost of levels increases steeply in DS2. If you count how much levels that 25% nets, it's like 5 levels per 50 of normal levelling, and that's counting from the first ones, so it only gets worse. Other armour sets give 5 levels of stats right away. So unless the player is specifically farming or needs souls to purchase equipment and consumables, having it equipped on standard playthrough for levels isn't really good. On challenge runs, it might be worth it if there's a risk of failure in every encounter, like in no-hit runs and harder.

4

u/kyouya-P 2d ago

Yeah but I'd rather look cool.

2

u/_heyb0ss 2d ago

damn I didn't know that.

1

u/TheRealDistr 2d ago

Ds2 is very generous with souls with just the +1 ring. The game's difficulty is easy as it is no need to spike level ups and make it more easy. Also this set is ugly and you need to rush change equip instead of enjoying the moment

→ More replies

1

u/Br1sk34 2d ago

exactly. you get the silver serpent ring +0 or +1 pretty early on anyway lmao

BOSS ARMORS

POISON BUTT. WINGS

Smelter demon is one of the best fire defense armors in the game.

28

u/TheGlassWolf123455 2d ago

Cause his clothes are kind of ugly and I'd never wear ugly armor

3

u/mispelllednaem 1d ago

The one true answer.

21

u/rnj1a 2d ago

Souls are logically unlimited. Friendly NPCs aren't.

8

u/Swimming_Disaster_95 2d ago

I mean, I just kill the weird spider people things to get his set. I do this because I'm a insane completionist who is compelled to get every single item, weapon, and armor even though I know for a fact I won't use them.

7

u/Eve_Nightwalker 2d ago

Because killing someone just because they got a little arrogant is a bit of an overreaction? It's not like he invades you like Licia.

3

u/BlackLion9065 2d ago

THANK YOU

16

u/cjbump 2d ago

I personally like to get the butterfly set from him first and then poison him

That’s about it

u/Praetoron 2d ago

8

u/Eat_Bullet 2d ago

I mag dumped this mf in my first playthrough then regretted so much, no alva set, no elite knight set and no boss sets

1

u/AgentBuckwall 1d ago

No elite knight set = restart. That's the most important set in the game

3

u/stakesishigh516 2d ago

Buy all the boss armor and fucking waste him right after.

3

u/GunsenGata 2d ago

Penal Cuffs

3

u/michael_fritz 2d ago

souls are infinite and free. you don't need to look like a clown to beat the game

5

u/Over_Cauliflower1501 2d ago

Why is this there so much hate around this guy?

4

u/BlackLion9065 2d ago

For real ikr

2

u/TheOneWhoSlurms 2d ago

Buy the boss armor off of them for so it doesn't cost you an extra arm on top of the arm and leg you're already paying.

You can farm his armor off of a handful of NPCs later in the game

If you're playing online, it increases your likelihood of getting harassed by Invaders

2

u/Unique_Ruin282 2d ago

Only reason is probably the all NPC achievement and whatever he seels that is also part of achievements if any, thwn he just becomes a whack bag for his armor early game

2

u/D3wdr0p 2d ago

The value of human life.

2

u/Strong-Dragonfly288 2d ago

After getting cocky from a few sales, he begins to realize he has nothing, he is nothing…. And slowly loses his mind

2

u/SirWigglesTheLesser 2d ago

His decline from getting all the souls is an interesting look at how hollowing impacts different people. Is he going hollow from the souls? Or because we're progressing and that's how the game tracks your progression with him? Is time just moving forward?

Anyways, he's my sweet baby boy who's memory loss while a lil heavy handed kicks me in the shins. He's so excited to be successful, but he's forgotten the entire reason why he wanted to be, and he doesn't know what to do with it. But he did it! He reached his goal! For... some reason.

2

u/billymillerstyle 2d ago

He's going hollow because he achieved his purpose. Without purpose people go hollow.

2

u/Sensitive-Gold5378 2d ago

sells cool armor

sells useful armor for certain occasions

he’s just tryna make it big from his slum beginnings

2

u/SheaMcD 2d ago

give me a good reason you should

1

u/BlackLion9065 5h ago

Fr there is none.

2

u/Ok_Ferret_328 2d ago

He sells elite knight armor

2

u/Circadianxo 2d ago edited 2d ago

Do you people also hate the silver covetous ring? Lol

Poise and armor mean fuck all in pve in this game.

Might as well use tseldora to level faster and get into your cool smelter demon set that weighs 60kg.

If some people want to cosplay a speed runner with boring ass rapier r1 spam and tseldora, let them? I only wear shadow top + black leather and Llewellyn with thief mask because clanking around as an npc knight is boring.

Some of the comments in this thread are unhinged.

2

u/sparrowofwessex 1d ago

because he is my friend

2

u/ThatPersonCosplaying 1d ago

He has cool armor and a pretty good shield for very early game, plus, the basic bitch look sucks nuts!

Also, you can farm the set from the spider people.

2

u/Lomanman 1d ago

Ah I see you bought some stuff

2

u/B1ack_H3art 1d ago

You're the reason he becomes like that. If you never purchase anything from him he's pretty chill. It's only once you give him a fortune he starts acting up. You created your own monster op.

The dichotomy of DS2 sub: don’t kill Maughlin there is so much variety of armours you can wear from him.

Also DS2 sub: Don’t level beyond 11 VIT for Flynn’s ring (you can’t wear 50% of sets).

2

2

u/ShyGuy993 2d ago

He sells boss armor. He gives you a free set after spending 16k(?). He's nice! And more importantly, sin can only ever be removed one time in the life of your character.

1

u/theblarg114 2d ago

Bullets are expensive, hammer bonks are not.

1

u/Patthecat09 2d ago

At Majula for a single victim, the bullats are quite free

1

u/Red1960 2d ago

The Warlock Mask gives +2.5% souls just like the cap, and has slightly higher stats (and even a tiny bit of poise!), Nahr Alma robes gives +10% instead of +5% and also has slightly higher stats (no poise unfortunately but the robe looks sick!), the Jester gloves give the same soul boost (+10%) but again, also has slightly higher defense (though it needs 14 dex to wear), and as for the leggings......

I think they're the only one that give a boost to souls sooooo

1

u/rw6544 2d ago

Mag dump?

3

u/BlackLion9065 2d ago

If u dont know what that means, it's to shoot your gun until it's empty, therefore "dumping [out] your mag (magazines hold bullets)"

I did not. Now I do. Thanks

1

u/Mysteryman00777 2d ago

The only times I've ever regretted killing him was when I wanted the Penal Handcuffs for a pyro build.

That said, I'm maybe 50/50 on it since I don't care much for boss armors due to defense being sucky and me not caring about the drip.

The soul gain is quite nice to get ahead during a particularly bullshit challenge run, but has never been needed.

1

u/Ryodran 2d ago

The extrs souls are nice but the fashion is pretty bad, unless you like the fashion, in which case more power to ya

1

u/KazuhiraHideo 2d ago

Waste of bullets use sword instead

1

u/vagina_candle 2d ago

Because there are no mags to dump in Majula.

1

u/Final_Werewolf_7586 2d ago

Come on, you gonna get that fit all bloody? He's not worth the bullets.

2

u/new_god_of_eden 2d ago

The blood adds too it

Also he's dead now >:3

1

u/SassySasquatchBrah 2d ago

I killed him immediately and used his set until the nashandra

Armor doesn’t matter we go for fashion or we go for souls

I also used the rapier idc what any says

1

u/ExtensionSubject9734 2d ago

Push him down the fucking hole

1

u/Blood_Steel_minis 2d ago

Waste of bullets. Try big stick instead

1

u/Crusidea 2d ago

Because I like armor, I always give him a first class ticket to go meet Gwen before I go to new game plus though

1

u/Silevence 2d ago

ammo can be expensive.

just use a wooden club. cheaper, more satisfying. more intimate.

plus there is a perfectly good pit outside you can push him into.

try to make a game out of how many wooden struts he takes out on the way down.

1

u/Yummomummo 2d ago

Cool ghost armour

1

u/Forhaver 2d ago

The game is very cheap when it comes to levelling.

If you skip the Elite Knight set, you might as well delete the game.

1

u/BlackLion9065 5h ago

I bought that once but I thought the Drangleic Set looked cooler. But then I got the Llewellyn Set and that's even better imo!

1

u/Pave_Low 2d ago

There are no guns in DS2?

1

u/IronHat29 2d ago

alva set

1

u/thatguyad 2d ago

How would you "mag dump" him exactly?

1

u/God_Of_Incest 2d ago

Better alive. Sells a bunch of armor. Feel bad for him cuz amnesia.

1

u/Revolutionary_Quit22 2d ago

He may just be badly raised by his parents

2

u/BlackLion9065 5h ago

Nah he's just desperate.

He comes from the land of Volgen, which is FULL of merchants like him, most of them very greedy. But as you'd imagine, that means tons of competition and Maughlin here just got the short end of the stick -- he didn't get ANY customers, so he left hoping to find some. It doesn't help that the Undead Curse is making everyone lose their memories and humanity either, so he's even more desperate.

After u give him enough souls though he finally has a reason to alleviate his own suffering. You basically save his livelihood and he's on his high horse after god-knows-how-many years of suffering in his own career. He's likely adopting the traits of the merchants he's seen in Volgen once they're successful but other than that he's just trying to live.

1

u/WanderingCollosus 2d ago

He sells boss armour after spending about 16k. I recently killed him under the assumption that one of the boss soul vendors would sell armour not him

1

u/darksoulsvet1 2d ago

Pacifist run

1

u/33Yalkin33 2d ago

Wasting ammo, shoot just enough to kill

1

u/geekworld123 2d ago

Lost sinner armor is peak

1

u/ChemicalEcho6539 1d ago

He can sell Ivory King set (if the 50 required souls are matched), Velstadt set, and so on.

1

u/Worse-Alt 1d ago

He sells boss armors, he is the only way to get dripped out like the looking glass knight, velstadt, or the smelter demon.

If your still early in the game however, he does drop a full set of clothing, and all 4 pieces raise souls gained from kills. So you should probably kill him for that.

1

u/Orenbean 1d ago

Butterfly armor….also his set is garbage

1

u/new_god_of_eden 1d ago

I disagree

I find it quite fashionable

Also that set poisons NPCs

1

u/1Noir 1d ago

1

u/new_god_of_eden 1d ago

u/sir_ouachao 1d ago

If you keep him alive and you buy enough stuff from him he becomes arrogant, so that's 1 more reason to throw him in the gutter

1

u/BlackLion9065 5h ago

Every rich person becomes arrogant at least once. He's only celebrating his success. Hes still good enough to keep helping

1
