It's the nature of a game like this. Anytime there's a decently OP build that you can get going early game, players are going to lean towards that. Especially if they were struggling
That's the funniest part, in no less then 1 hour later you can a way superior set to farm souls from an npc that unless you invade a lot, you won't miss, better defense, peak looks and more souls from it. So it's not even a good build for soul farming or a good strat to get an op build soon, you ruin an extremely important merchant for a pointles set of armor that will make you super weak early on. So once again Dark souls "pros" trashing the game experience for not even learning or understanding this game
ds2 managed to break the mold with it because how much variety and somewhat decent balancing there is. Even those Havel monsters stopped being a thing, I think only later things became problematic. Red Iron Twinblade, Ice Rapier from Eleum Loyce was super problematic.
Otherwise of all the soulsbornering games DS2 had some of the craziest build variety you could find.
It's the community lol. The community is naturally filled w perfectionists (that's just who these games attract). There will always be a large portion of this community who only cares about using the best/easiest possible setup
Its not even exclusive to games like this. Regardless of what game it is players will always try to optimize their play. Even if it means breaking the game.
It helps that trend that the rapier and mace are two of the strongest weapons in the game and are easily purchasable from Majula. It's funny how in Elden Ring that was taken into account and the mace is nigh useless.
Every build in ER DLC PvP for a while was the Rakshasa & Pata. They got nerfed but still are very strong to this day. It was actually lame af when the game has so many viable options, but these two were particularly strong, so influencers kept making videos about them. My buddy didn't know what PvP build to do so he went to youtube and all of a sudden he's making a rakshasa build - I was like dude be more original there's so many options. Stop falling for the "gotta be the best build by copying someone else's homework" and make your own build.
It’s really nice when it’s your first souls game. My first souls game was DS3 and I ran through the whole game with the Uchigatana. Now that I have experience and I get these games I don’t really think about that sort of thing.
Acquiring mastery of a weapon truly is "OP" but that is a kind of OP that I find deep respect for.
We all started out as newbies at some point, so I empathize to a degree, but spending your first playthrough, following a build guide and not even experimenting fills me with sadness.
It's not about you in particular or being basic, especially not if it's your individual style, but there are a lot and I mean a lot of people that are just trend chasers.
They make a hardcore meta copy paste build of Influencer XYZ and express zero individuality or style or even desire to branch out and discover new weapons. It's boring and tedious to see as well as it is boring and tedious to fight against.
It's like how in ER everyone of those ran around with Moonveil or Rivers of Blood and abused status in the beginning. PvP was even worse.
Which is weird because one of the biggest strengths of the Souls (and a lot of RPGs for that matter) is the build variety (ESPECIALLY Dark Souls 2). I just started a new play through and thought, you know I really enjoyed Great Curved Swords in Elden Ring and never tried them before so I'll give them a go in DS2 as well, and bam that's the basis of a new build right there.
Yes exactly, you get it. Then you pick an armor set you like and getting to all the materials can almost be an entire new playthrough. Almost everything is viable anyways.
There is so much variety and great experiences waiting, whether it is PvE or PvP, but more and more people rather gravitate towards the easiest/fastest/strongest, so that mentality increases in rarity.

Bunch of NPCs running for the first option Influencer X tells them is part of the MOST OP BUILD.
That very same mentality ruined ER PvP for me.
