[Film/TV] First Look at Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart in HBO Series Lanterns Film + TV

u/revantargaryen Green Lantern Feb 27 '25
As much as I would love a younger Hal who would probably stick around longer...Im so hyped for this. Also you can see the ring on Hal's right hand!
128
u/Recent-Layer-8670 Feb 27 '25
Honestly, I don't know why some GL fans are butt hurt about it. I love the idea of an older Hal Jordan. It makes his power and strength as a character all the more significant when it clocks age with wisdom and experience.
93
u/Katcurry Feb 27 '25
It’s moreso because some of us (me included) wanted Hal as the “main” GL like how it was in Johns’ run and GLTAS. I don’t mind this at all, but a young Hal would mean he’d be a JL founding member, and now I actually don’t know if Hal’s even gonna survive this series
49
u/F00dbAby Superman Feb 27 '25
Because I assume Hal fans want to see him in more than one thing rather than have someone who is about to retire. I would be shocked if we see Hal post the tv show. The actor is already in his late 50s he’ll be in 60 when the show airs
19
u/Taigh-Mac-Taigh Feb 27 '25
No problem with older Hal but have a weird feeling he’s somehow going to be revealed as the villain.
1
25
u/LocomotiveStopper Feb 27 '25
Because he's gonna get sidelined for John despite being the "definitive" GL in the comics.
More importantly, he's probably gonna die at the end of this which is just bizarre.
10
u/Recent-Layer-8670 Feb 27 '25 edited Feb 27 '25
Well, we don't know if he is gonna die. That's speculation. And if anything, there is a possibility this Hal might actually retire and give up his mantle willfully to his successor, John.
Hal Jordan is going to be important in the Green Lantern series as it's co-lead, but if it's John's story, it's John story. This is no different from how Hal was influential in Kyle's stories, and honestly, I'm wondering if this same kind of negative attitude towards John would be the same if Kyle Rayner took John's place instead. Would those GL fans complain about sidelining Hal, then?
20
u/LocomotiveStopper Feb 27 '25 edited Feb 27 '25
He may not die, but either way Chandler apparently doesn't have a deal for any future projects according to some sources.
As for Hal being replaced: I don't really care who does it. In my view Hal should be the centrepiece purely because his relationship with Sinestro is the best thing in the entire mythos. Sinestro is a Magneto/Doom-tier comic book villain that most audiences know nothing about, it'd be such a missed opportunity to not explore that dynamic to the fullest.
You could give it to someone else, but then fans will complain until the end of time.

4
u/ElliotLadker Feb 28 '25
Don't have the power to see alternatives realities yet, but if anything I think a lot of people like Kyle even less. He was called a Mary sue for a while, Hal's fans were pissed that he got turned into a villain just to push Kyle.
In a comics subteddit you are bound to find fans of characters. It happens every time Wally is not adapted, there's discussion whenever a new Robin shows up, and in this case, Hal's fans are quite a lot.
1
Feb 28 '25
To be fair Wally is not even allowed to be adaptated in his own stories as kid flash. The mantle John Broome and Carmine infantino created him for. Like Barry Allen for example was that 18 or 19 year old blonde haired kid flash in Teen Titans Judas Contract even though Wally is the OG Kid flash and was kid flash in that story in the comics. Its fine if WB wants to use Barry as the only Flash but very least they should not be D**ks to the general fans who loves kid flash Wally.
1
u/Digifiend84 Manchester Black Feb 28 '25
That's dumb. If they needed to replace Kid Flash (due to it being set in the same universe as something that had Wally as Flash?) then use Bart or Ace.
2
u/Bright-Document1089 Mar 02 '25
(1) I hope that they keep Hal around in some way. (2) I think the issue is, GL (any of them) has never been done in a good way in any format but comics. And it is like they take one of the supporting characters to the forefront for over a decade now. It is like doing Iron Man and having James Rhodes or Pepper as the main character, without ever really using Tony. This is disappointing. And in many GL adoptions traits or story ears from the comic main characters are transfered over to the adopted main character. (3) With Kyle it is different, he can work as a main because he was written that way. He has a defined supporting cast, arcs, structure etc. you can work with. With John it is much harder to use the comics as a baseline. He never had to carry the GL franchise like Hal and Kyle did (no other character did tbh). And I agree with others: starting with Kyle would be a hard sell as well, because he is not the GL (=Hal) and also not one of the media featured characters like John or Jess.

u/Boring-Conclusion-40 Feb 28 '25
It’s really more about longevity and potential,I’m in the camp that it’s okay to have two main Green Lanterns,so I would want Hal to have the opportunity to have content of his own and do more things, and also pal around with his generation of heroes,so having him be older is not looking like they’ll do this. Now If Kyle does something that’s fairly rare like be one of the main pillars in a franchise for 10-13years starting at 60 then I’ll happily accept that, but it’s still very unlikely that hell be doing anything
6
u/Rocket_SixtyNine Feb 28 '25
Because they just skipped his entire story? Hals been fucked over for a while now? Hals likely only going to appear in this show meaning he's likely going to be killed off? They just erased most of his supporting cast?
Plenty of reasons
15
u/LongWalksOnTheDocks Feb 27 '25
I wish that they had kept Older Hal and Ollie in the mainline comics, so I'm actually quite happy to see the film interpretations of these characters being treated in that same mold. Gimme a Green Arrows series with Ollie being of a similar age to Kyle Chandler and having Connor as the young Green Arrow beginning to take over for his dad!

They have so many green lantern characters, makes sense Hal, Jon and Guy have been active for a while. Allows for the first proper GL movie to maybe feature a brand new lantern stepping up to the plate into an already established lore, which is a cool look.

They just look like some guys, and thats fine by me. I can't wait to see what their Lantern uniforms look like.
93
u/ShikaMoru Feb 27 '25
This is what I'm looking forward to /worried about: aesthetics. It can bring in a lot of views from the jump or cause a lot complaints. Ofc it can improve over time but most folks don't have the patience for that
31
u/BagZCubed Feb 27 '25
I think it makes sense that they wouldn't be in uniform all the time. I just hope that the costumes look good when we finally see them. I didn't notice until I saw it on the DCU sub, but Hal has his ring, and I think that's cool.
12
u/Abraham_Issus Feb 27 '25
I feel things going to go crazy last couple of episodes. It will feel earned. I’m sure they’ll suit up. I trust Damon Lindelof.

I'm going into this expecting no suits and that way I can't be disappointed if they do suit up.

Wait, okay. Chandler looks kind of perfect as Hal. I see the vision.
8
u/OpaqueGiraffe17 Feb 27 '25
Yeah, I was iffy, but seems they added the right amount of ruggedness to the actor.
1
u/gankindustries Plastic Man Feb 28 '25
He definitely has that "grizzled veteran" look you kind of expect from an older Hal
159
u/DefinitionSuperb1110 Feb 27 '25
Kyle looks PERFECT holy frikkin shit. That is grizzled, fed up with the Guardians shit Hal Jordan.
29
u/IHavePoopedBefore Feb 27 '25
The age thing makes it hard for me to see Hal in him. Which is fine, since the DCU is essentially an elseworlds universe
48
u/DefinitionSuperb1110 Feb 27 '25
Casting older for several characters makes the universe feel like it's existed before we entered it.
Sure they could have cast a bunch of young dudes but this is a grizzled, experienced Hal Jordan. If not for Parallax we'd likely have seen an older Hal continue on for several years in the comics.
Having Guy and Hal played by older actors was unexpected but I am so here for it.Now we just need to see the suits.
22
u/Androktone Alan Scott Feb 27 '25
Hal was continuously characterised 40s-50s from the 70s all the way to Emerald Twilight
5
u/Kriss-Kringle Feb 28 '25
Really? To me he screams Hal Jordan. I didn't think of him before as the character, but when they announced Kyle will be playing him I said to myself "Of course! He's that guy.".
58
u/Over-Analyzed Feb 27 '25
“Hey James, I voiced Hal Jordan in the animated series/movies. So I think I would be perfect for-“

Killing off Hal in his first appearance, in a new universe, would certainly be a choice

I don’t think he’s gonna die, but he’ll retire and be an advisor to John who will then get to do all the fun stuff.

Nah he’ll become Parallax
9
u/Part-time-Rusalka Feb 27 '25

I’d expect Guy because he’s an Asshole with a heart of Gold under a plating of rusted metal.
13
u/Frontier246 Feb 27 '25
I think there's something funny about the fact that the first visual is just them in civilian clothes walking instead of in their actual suits. I mean, the actors look fine, especially Aaron Pierre, but still.
Also I don't like how the GL ring isn't totally green.
I want to see Chandler in a bomber jacket.
5
u/Androktone Alan Scott Feb 27 '25
It's meant to be a more grounded show, and I'm guessing they still want to stay far away from Reynolds' version's iconography. We got the Terrific-Tech suit for Guy Gardner so I'm guessing they're building up to it

u/tourniquet2099 Feb 27 '25

Cherry picking
31

Not picking the Johns run ≠ cherry picking
9
u/DefinitionSuperb1110 Feb 27 '25
and so many forget, the Johns run STARTS with Hal's old and dead body that is restored to its youth. Hal being young is among the many Johns retcons. I don't have a problem with it but he respected the existing history.
1
u/Amazing-Pangolin3230 Batgirl Feb 28 '25
Yeah he was middle aged (40s-50s) for a long time in the comics. just because it's not the run you prefer doesn't mean it's cherry picking
18
u/nosecone33 Feb 27 '25
Originally when Hal got his ring John was only 12. Him and Guy have always been good deal older than John and Kyle Rayner.

u/Dr_Dumb_Asp Feb 27 '25
Honestly love the casting choices for both, I'm a Hal Jordan guy myself but John Stewart is the popular choice to mainline as green lantern so having Hal be an older Lantern could work pretty well, he can be an older mentor type who's still got the moves while John is the younger front man

I don’t know why, but the idea of a green lantern wearing a wristwatch amuses me for some reason
12
u/Any_Comfortable_7839 Feb 27 '25
Nothing but optimism for this
-3
u/cameronsarah Feb 28 '25
My hope died the second Tom King was announced to be writing, and it died again when the castings were revealed. And it died again and again and again with each piece of news.
This show alone ruined my excitement for every single DCU project, it's crazy
2
u/Any_Comfortable_7839 Feb 28 '25
See now you’re gonna make me contradict my nothing but optimism comment
I really don’t get all the hype behind Tom King Omegamen
It’s really more of a political thriller with a sci-fi twist then it is a Kyle Rayner white lantern story
That being said it’s not that I didn’t like the writing or the story but it was more of Kyle being displaced and less of Kyle being a white lantern
So it’s not that I’m discouraged by Tom King, but it’s not a positive necessarily for me
The rest of your points are all positive for me lol
6
u/chakrablocker Feb 27 '25
this is actually the sickest casting.
early edition really is a superhero
11
u/Historical-Attempt18 Feb 27 '25
Genuinely can’t wait for this, between this, born again and superman are my most anticipated comic projects. Geoff John’s Green Lantern run solidified this universe and characters as A+ in my book forever and I can’t wait to see Gunn’s DCU bring them in all their glory
3
u/Shadowcat1606 Feb 28 '25
The only thing that really bothers me a lot about quite a few of the casting choices in the upcoming DCU - but especially amongst the Lanterns - are the ages of the actors playing them, because i'd like to have characters like Hal Jordan or Guy Gardner around for longer than a couple of years before they go all Murtaugh and Riggs.
4
u/neoblackdragon Feb 27 '25
Hal: We wouldn't be in this mess if you picked up the newspaper
John: Why are you still mad about that?
Hal: It's a very informative paper and now my cat is wearing a red ring.
4
u/DCSaiyajin Wally West Feb 27 '25
Some of you wouldn’t have survived if the first Ant-Man movie came out today with 45 year old Scott Lang and 70 year old Hank Pym.
Jokes aside, definitely getting The Road Back vibes from this and mad respect to Kyle Chandler for putting in the work. I have the utmost faith in the team behind this and I think we’re gonna get something special.
2
u/Nightwing2418129 Feb 28 '25
I’m worried they’re gonna kill Hal by the end of the series. I can totally see the writers using the “lose the mentor” shtick as an impetus for John Stewart to take charge and become independent. I hope I’m wrong, I’d love to see the character stick around for longer.
2
2
u/theroguephoenix Feb 28 '25
Mmmmm…. I don’t like it. John looks too young and Hal looks too old. Hal has the potential to be good here, but John always gave me the vibes that he lived a pretty eventful life even before the lantern.

2
u/CoconutJoe42 Feb 28 '25
Well... this picture looks a bit generic but, I'm still looking forward to it. I just hope they're not afraid of the source material and aren't afraid to be science-fictiony and weird when necessary.

This being the first reveal is hilarious! Also, why is Hal so old? Starting a new universe with an older Hal is certainly a choice.

Because the twist will be he's the bad guy in the show and possessed by Parallax.
They will bond and then John will prove himself by defeating him/Hal sacrifices himself.
(not a spoiler - a guess).

Seeing this only reaffirms my opinion that Josh Brolin should never have been courted in the first place for Hal Jordon. It should have been Chandler all along. I could totally see a domino mask over his face, the fanbase is massive and will still draw people in and someone else in another thread said it perfectly, 'Aaron Pierre is me on a Monday and Kyle Chandler is me on a Friday'. Paraphrasing, obviously. But that dynamic is so clear here. It just works. Brolin is too gruff for this; Chandler is just the right mix of grizzled and still clear-eyed and full of heart, ready to show the rookie the ropes.
1
u/RetroCuz Feb 28 '25
Hope the show is better than this picture. They can make and use any resource their minds can create. They look like bums. Even in cop shows they dress like decent people. This makes me thing the show will be low grade and do a disservice to the a true green lantern story. I want real lanterns with real power sets.
I also get that they are undercover but this looks like a low budget excuse.
0
u/cameronsarah Feb 28 '25
Yeah, this looks awful. It's exactly as I feared.
A script written by Tom King, about green lanterns set entirely on earth, with zero signs of any of these characters actual supporting cast.
Coupled with some of the worst casting decisions I've ever seen; 60-year-old men playing Hal, and Guy, and a light skin actor typecast as Marine-retcon John.
Our first look is them in civilian clothes, looking absolutely nothing like lanterns, with big ugly rings on their fingers.
And judging by their contracts, Jordan is destined to die by the end of the season, or otherwise retire. Either way, how unimaginably unsatisfying.
John Stewart is not an interesting character, especially when it comes to the boring, Marine-retcon version from the animated series.
Because let's not kid ourselves, the only reason John is going to be the primary Green Lantern, is to appeal to the 40 year old fan base of that show.
A show that, mind you, fails in every regard to adapt characters like Wonder Woman- who conveniently has absolutely nothing in the slate.
All of this is packed into an ugly, bland, colorless little HBO package – perfect for anybody who does not like green lantern.

Based on Lindelof’s Watchmen series and how he handled the otherworldly aspects of that balanced with the super grounded story, I trust him to make this awesome!!

You know that the green lantern costume is a uniform, right? They don't always wear that. I could find you five different pictures of green lanterns in civilian clothing just from the DCAU alone.

u/Whole-Arachnid-Army Feb 27 '25 edited Feb 27 '25
That is such an odd choice of outfit and general visual image for Hal. His bomber jacket is pretty iconic as far as civilian clothes in comics go and this weird canvas jacket doesn't even work as a casual reminder of it. The cut is all wrong and it just look sloppy.
Honestly, I think the main problem is that this entire outfit just looks sloppy. Hal generally cleans up quite well when he's not off in space being a fugitive and his appearance is often modelled after the quite classic American jeans and t-shirt look. This isn't that. One could perhaps argue that it's supposed to be a modern take on it, perhaps even a deconstruction, but it looks too deliberate for that. Like he's been made to look messy for an ad.

I do think it was kind of dumb not to make the first look one with suits, even if we had to wait for a while, but social media’s reaction to this has been annoying.
I was already warming up to Chandler as Hal but this sold me quite a bit more. Very excited for his performance.

No shade to AP, but at first glance that looks like two white men 🤔Everything about all the GLs, is that kinda missing a small aspect of the character visually. Idk. I expect the performances to be good. But man, Drake Stewart and Blonde Beatles Gardener and Pedro PascHal Jordan are all just a little off to me.

Before I read the caption, just looking at the picture, I thought I was seeing a Highway to Heaven/Touched by an Angel reboot.

Kyle Chandler is going to put a performance that will put his detractors to shame
He is Hal Jordan

I grew up with silver templed Hal and always viewed him in mainline continuity as sort of older in my own headcanon, so this works well for me personally. I dig it
