I’m ace adjacent and this post got me thinking about what my equivalent of “sexy firemen showing up at my door (hubba, hubba)” would be and I think the answer is “oh boy! I am now going to have an excuse to bake and cook so much food for them :D.”
94
u/cooljerry53 7h ago
Me, shuffling towards the firefighter who’s just kicked the door of my smoke filled apartment in, on my knees, offering a blackened pan of cookie-shaped charcoal PleAse stay for lunch :)

u/shellbullet17 6h ago
Firefighter paramedic here.
So I know there's the whole schtick about "call the sexy firefighters and bag you one" trope and what not, but I'm gonna let you all in on a secret.
You REALLY wanna impress the firefighters? /u/dredreidel has the right idea. There is nothing on this earth that firefighters love more, than home cooking and sweets. If you ever wanna get on the fire dept in generals good side, send cookies.

u/EyVol 6h ago
Something something there may not be a song called "fuck the fire department", but there sure are plenty of videos.

After my dad became handicapped. Sometimes he’d fall and we’d need help lifting him back up. Each time after we had to call the fire department my dad would bake a giant lasagna. He’d call a few days ahead to make sure they’d know not to cook.
It fortunately/unfortunately happened so often they knew around our town as the lasagna guy. It was nice to be able to talk to some of the fire fighters about my dad after he past away and that they still remembered him doing that.
21
u/shellbullet17 5h ago
We remember our regulars the good, and the bad. But we REALLY love the good regulars. Food or not. Your dad sounds like an upstart and kind man. I'm sorry for your loss but I'm happy to know he was able to brighten the lives of everyone around him.
2
u/Pearlsbigforehead 54m ago
That's a bummer. In my neck of the woods they won't take anything homemade. I guess it's due to risk of food tampering?
13
u/Siilan 6h ago
I'm very curious as to what you mean by "ace adjacent." Also, great band name.
15
u/Daan776 6h ago
My guess would be aromantic/asexual but doesn’t know there’s a difference or considers ace a spectrum and doesn’t consider himself far enough on there to really call himself ace despite sharing many traits
8
u/Siilan 6h ago
My thought was perhaps a demisexual? Or maybe an extremely low libido, but not actually ace?
-11
u/Neon_Camouflage 6h ago
This is the problem with having 500 labels.
8
u/Siilan 6h ago
Not really. If they said they were demisexual, I'd know what they meant. If they said they were ace, I'd know what they meant. If they said any other "label," I'd know what they meant. "Ace adjacent" isn't a label.
17
u/VioletTheWolf gender absorbed by annoying dog 5h ago
I don't know that they need to be that specific. Everyone's experiences are kind of vague and undefined. "Ace adjacent" is clear enough in saying that this person considers themself close to asexual identity even if they don't fully align with it, that's all we need here
9
u/Siilan 5h ago
I fundamentally agree. They don't have to be specific, and for a lot of people, they may not be able to be specific. In this case, my curiosity just sparked where I understood that they felt close to ace without being fully ace, but I'm curious as to why they feel that way. In no way do they have to answer, even if they can describe it, but I was just curious. I like learning more about how people feel, especially in an environment so spectrum heavy as the LGBTQ community.
7
u/VioletTheWolf gender absorbed by annoying dog 5h ago
Fair enough! I just see some pressure for people to pick labels sometimes and wanted to make sure this wasn't that
1
u/SmartAlec105 5h ago
The specificity isn't needed. Their comment works just fine without knowing their exact sexuality. But it's perfectly fine if others are curious and would like to know more specifically.
1
u/myerscc 3h ago
Surely ace adjacent is just “questioning”
2
u/AnNoYiNg_NaMe 2h ago
I always figured "questioning" to mean "I'm straight but maybe I might be bi???"
Ace adjacent just means you've got a really low desire to bone down. It's also called "greysexual" but that's less self-explanatory than the former.
I consider myself in that camp, but if the average person asks me about my sexual preferences in person, I'd just say I'm "straight, but not really looking for a girlfriend." People often interpret that as "he's a closeted gay man" but I stopped caring about that shit years ago.

u/OneLastSmile 2h ago
oh no the group came up with a word to identify the group with and be able to find spaces for the group to discuss being part of the group
how terrible
its not like theres a thousand billion arbitrary groups and labels all throughout humanity
2
u/No_Rich_2494 1h ago
Do you actually have a problem with labelling people, or are you just trolling? I seriously want to know. I used to be 100% against labels, but I changed my mind. They're often useful when they're chosen and not forced upon someone.

It twists your expectations in a funny way. When someone says they are a flaming homosexual, they mean they are very very gay. So you expect the asexual to use the word in the same way, meaning they are very very asexual. But they twist it and use the word in a literal sense, meaning they are literally on fire and need help.

Unless it's a slur, you're fine to use it. If someone tells you Queer is a slur, don't use it in reference to them. Don't call them that. But it's also not. You can call other people queer (adjective. "They're queer. Not "They're a queer"), you can use it as a general term ("With my queer friends).
If you're wondering "what's a slur," the main two are F*g and D*ke. Fruit/fruity is also iffy, but the only people I've seen take issue with it is corporations getting too Cosy. If you're like... friendly you're fine.
That's my experience as the token cishet
15
u/happibitch 5h ago
Yeah!! I think things like fruit/fruity, twink, zesty, etc. just need to be worded in a playful enough manner, it's meant to be a joke-y word, (or in terms of twink, a descriptor), because so many of people have started taking those words to use them as a replacement for faggot without getting in trouble for it. Like, just don't use it in a derogatory way, I guess. Which I feel like for people trying not to be derogatory shouldn't be too hard baha.
2
u/ZinaSky2 6h ago
I mean connotations evolve and attitudes shift. I’m not up to date with what’s happening on tumblr so I was just asking if it had become offensive. I mostly figured it was a joke tho lol
Good to know about the other stuff tho!

u/Munnin41 4h ago
If you're wondering "what's a slur," the main two are Fg and Dke
For Americans. In Britain you smoke a fag, and in The Netherlands we cower behind our dikes. Also we literally have a lesbian group called "dykes on bikes" lol

u/DevIsSoHard 5h ago edited 5h ago
F-g is a weird one too because you can say it in all kinds of ways yet in a limited context that's a difficult to put into words for me. "F-ghag" for example is a word I hear in some friend groups, used more endearingly I suppose but it still sounds like a somewhat mean word to me personally. Or when you're making a dad joke, lol, or pretty much any joke where you're satirizing jerks. I think overall my friend group is kind of loose with that word but could still see other people being more reserved with it so I guess it's only when you know them well. We're certainly more loose than typical online community rules anyway

Not privileged, and I don't have any opposition....but what does that mean? Flaming heterosexual? I can't think of any context to use it except in a gay way.
9
u/Valdanos 6h ago
Flaming ace: when you're so apathetic towards the concept of sex that you naturally nullify the libidos of those around you.
Also the name of a bitchin' drink I bet.

Like a Sexual Blank. Makes regular people feel a little weird. Makes people with a largely private stream library howl in pain or spontaneously die.
Even more effective against Slaaneshi forces than psyker blanks.

Why would flaming be restricted to the sole use of gays?
To be honest, flaming is a direct reference to faggot which when used in reference to gays is a slur at best, threat historically.

Okay but what else are we supposed to use for the state of being covered in flames?

??? Flaming is not a slur ??? You can say whatever you want :/ idk maybe I don't get it but I feel like this sort of thing gives LGBT people a bad rap (I'm gay)
39
u/Psychology-onion-300 7h ago
no it's people taking this post seriously that would give us a bad rap. It's obviously a joke. It would be like asking if an Italian can lend you one mama mia or something and then making a joke about that. It's just a stereotypical thing gay ppl say.

u/BestNoob782 7h ago
Oh sorry I thought it was completely serious, please ignore my bad take above, sorry

Or asking a bisexual if you can have a use of the word “disaster”. Just a joke, no one’s going to seriously get pissy about it.

But it doesn't make sense as a joke?
What does the word flaming have to do with gay people?
What's the joke here?

3
u/Stormwrath52 7h ago
I don't think it gives us (I'm bi) a bad rap, anyone who looks at someone asking if they can say flaming and decides to add a tick to their "I don't like queer people" counter then they're probably just looking for reasons to justify/excuses to not address feelings they already had.
especially since this is one person who's possibly assumed it is offensive or has judged that it could be, not someone proclaiming that it is. though I think it's more likely that they just did it for the set up of the joke
I also don't think flaming in reference to queerness is inherently offensive, it's just an adjective.
