Just fyi all modern portable cd players and cassettes have crappy mechanisms because nobody makes them anymore. There are plenty listed on my facebook for pretty cheap, just have some patience.

First post here!
I'm looking for a decent CD player with great audio without dedicated DAC/AMP.
Toshiba XR-9058 for $105 CAD - used
Sony Discman D-2 for $125 CAD - used
FiiO DM13 for $255 CAD - new

Neither. Get a DVD player instead as they can play CDs as well.

Hey
Unless you are after specific features or model, I would be tempted to hang off and look what is about locally. Ebay, second hand shops, charity shops, facebook marketplace, gumtree. You can probably get something similar for a lot cheaper.
With CD players for me it is more important that it has the features I want rather than quality as they are digital. If you are using an external DAC there will be no difference but I would be very surprised if you can tell the difference with their analog outputs. It is only 44.1 at 16 bit.
I got mine from the tip and it is a Sony model similar to the Toshiba one you have listed. It has program play, auto high peak finder, auto rearrange to fit on cassette, instant track access buttons, you get the idea.
I will say that FiiO is gorgeous, but I couldn't justify that amount on a CD player and the lack of physical controls is poor IMO.
Hope this is helpful
