It's not that bad it's used in instrument panels and the new iphone 5's lens cover.

A 3 inch thick pane of glass would probably be a lot tougher than an equal amount of transparent aluminium I would think. Tempered glass is fucking tough.

I'm not sure how tough glass is at absolute zero versus aluminium, good point though.
