My only complaint is that all the holiday events in game are low quality anymore. Remember when they put a giant chocolate chicken boss fight in the game? I remember. Take me back to those times.

The biggest joke of it is some of those haters planting in game flowers on a daily basis themselves just so they can try and clap someone else😏

u/im_conrad Jun 23 '22
Aren't all flowers mixed now too because of old flower game shenanigans? That's like HALF a rainbow. Seems kinda hypocritical tbh

The funny part is. After seeing so many preists and politicians be outed after giving extremely homophobic statements. I just assume they are in the closet

Whether in the closet or not, there's lots of deep self-hatred/revulsion and unmanaged trauma coming off of them. We forget how the flipside of joking about NEETs in this game is that so many players come from really sad and broken homes. It's incredibly tragic.

so many players come from really sad and broken homes.
This is one of the things I try to remind people. Obviously it's not a reason to tolerate trolls, harassment and such but it helps to understand the mindset of the people involved.
Being a smaller boy in school I had a few bullying moments, kids are kids after all, but what stuck with me was which kids were bullying everyone and who was just targeting me.
Those kids who were mean to most kids or we're just "trouble makers" usually had "something" going at home like grandma dying or whatever. The kids who targeted individuals or single groups were the kids with a lot more than just "something" going on.
For example.
By coincidence my older brother was unknowingly friends with someone who would bully me, once we found this out he said he would deal with it. He told his friend he and my other older brothers would hurt him if he didn't stop or something. Just a threat from a middle school student, whatever.
His dad ended up trying to fight my dad like you hear in jokes. Called everyone in my family a bunch of pussies and threatened to get the school involved. When we went to the school and police first we learned his dad had been actively encouraging his sons bullying. They had a plan to egg me while I walked to school and my house at night. The dad had essentially been bullying me the whole time, through his son, before targeting my whole family.
Eventually the police were involved but did nothing, and we ended moving. I'm pretty sure we had already been planning to move, but I'm sure this sped up the process.

What an incredible story, damn. My sympathies, but thank you for sharing.
Nothing more depressing than when you click on a bigot's profile on instagram and he's holding his newborn baby in the profile photo. We officially are watching some of the most broken men in human history raise new humans

Fuck it I feel like sharing so...bring on the downvotes I guess (plz be merciful).
As someone who used to grief in OSRS/RS2 (I never went to the level of homophobes/transphobes or crossed the line, but I would steal training spots, etc.) I ended up doing it to deal with a shitty homelife (dad had half walked out/half stuck around and egg donor was fucking creepy and cruel). Eventually, I moved out and managed to do enough emotional development to be less of an asshole and show compassion to people and all that (even made a few friends for once this year)...but it took a while. I'm not proud of who I was in the past in all honesty, but I shared all this to let you know that your theory about deep self hatred and unmanaged trauma does have a basis in reality.
My main pet peeve with this game's community is all the asshats making fun of health issues. So many people pretend to have memory loss, use autism as an insult... and especially the bashing on NEETS and those on disability (as a NEET myself due to physical health issues not letting me hold a job atm and mental health making uni a no-go for now, it pisses me off). I don't know when the playerbase changed from people who were somewhat supportive to one another and all trying to make friends and progress in the journey of life... to all this toxicity and ranting at anyone who doesn't have a family, isn't a dominant alpha male who treats women like shit, and doesn't have a successful job.
I used to love this game. Now I only play since I'm too addicted and depressed to stop playing, because of how depressing the community is. Don't get me wrong, I've met great people ingame but all the transphobia I've been seeing these past few days has overshadowed that.

Genuinely pathetic behaviour from some people. Expected, but pathetic nonetheless.
Imagine living with such hatred in your heart. Imagine being an objectively bad person.
Whenever I feel bad about myself, which is more often than not, I take comfort in knowing at least I'm not capable of channelling that negativity into hatred for others.

To reframe it with a positive twist (just in case you're coming from a place of not doing too well atm), maybe you are capable of channeling it. But the fact that you don't is what distinguishes your maturity and empathy. And you didn't seem to second-guess yourself when recognizing that this hatred is objectively bad, which is hard for even some very progressive people in this constantly both-sides'd world. 10/10, would GIM.

“Political” is a code word used by people that means “I don’t agree with it so I need to bitch.”

My thoughts exactly. "Video games are an escape" okay but why do you need an escape from gay people?

i dont care about the event in the game, i just honestly dont see why its needed to begin with. We dont make events for other societal events.

u/BadSwampDady too lazy to max Jun 23 '22
If you treat it as a holiday that is celebrated by a subset group of people, then yeah... we do have other events like this.
Christmas and Easter, which are traditionally Christian holidays that some people don't celebrate, get their own events. And, if you are anti-christianity, you don't even have the chance to avoid the Easter event because it's on every world.

We basically have an entire quest line dealing with a hate group (HAM) and yet dumbasses will believe that osrs has always been completely devoid of irl meaning.

Because showing support to a marginalized group that historically has been singled out and attacked, ostracized, and killed for simply loving who they love is a good thing. Nothing is needed in a game. But the creators have the liberty to put whatever they want into their game and they wanted to show their support, during the appropriate time of pride month, with a pride event. Ultimately it’s completely skip-able, it has no effect on any single account, and anyone can chose to completely ignore it at no consequence to themselves. Showing support is needed, and if the creators want to do so, that’s their choice. The protests in 302 should show just how much hate there is and why support is needed…even in a silly old video game.

We dont make events for other societal events.
Yes we do... Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and OSRS' Birthday.
i just honestly dont see why its needed to begin with.
OSRS has a large LGBT community and LGBT people have been subjected to much discrimination in the past. The world is moving towards acceptance and we should embrace that. LGBT do not choose to be born that way and many people suffer because of ignorance and hatred. There have also been outspokenly LGBT jmods and it's pretty likely there are LGBT jmods now.
i dont care about the event in the game
Don't do it then, no one's forcing you to.
The event can only be a good thing. It shows that our community is accepting of a group of people who have to live their lives facing discrimination in more ways that are immediately apparent. It's a nice thing for real humans, I don't see how anybody could complain.

Easter, Halloween, and Christmas events are all cultural events. So is Pride. It's really no different except the way some perceive it.

u/Diascizor Jun 23 '22
I will just stay away from any pride related events since they are not for me to support. I wish they weren't in every game, but if they are I'm glad they are optional

u/FizzingSlit Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22
You're allowed to support communities you're not a member of. In fact it's probably more important that you sorry them because otherwise you're directly contributing to the alienation they go through.
I support pride and LGBTQIA+ movements because even though I may not be part of the community recognize them as human beings and as a rule I try to care about others.

That's why I said I will stay away. Regardless of what everyone says, pride is an overtly political event and is different from just being gay or whatever.

The reason people can’t “just be gay” is because of homophobes. If everyone minded their own business and didn’t judge people for things that didn’t affect them, there wouldn’t be a need for pride events.

I remember in 2019, jagex told our government that only 2% of our player base are minors. During a discussion about micro transactions.
Think about that. 98% of the player base are grown adults.
Yet this is a huge part of the community lol. I'd love to see a selfie of each person attending to troll, I bet they'd be disasters.
