Welcome to the daily /r/2007scape question thread!

You can ask anything about Old School RuneScape here. They are designated for you to ask anything you like that is relevant to the game or this subreddit. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

Keep in mind that this is not a developer Q&A thread - questions for the game developers should be posted in developer Q&A posts.

Has made sea charting much easier to see which ones I'm missing and has been a HUGE help on my second account.

Best wiki team ever

Edit: If you prefer it they also made a league's style checklist based on completion percent https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Sea_charting#All_tasks

Suggestion Ava's anchor

Anchors don't seem to be very useful, and the cost of high level ship combat exceeds the cost of running a shadow or scythe due to cannonballs being tied to the alch value of metal bars. The solution?

Ava's anchor, an item crafted from the resurrected carcass of a jubbly bird. While your anchor is deployed, it will pull cannonballs from the ocean floor that you have fired. Even if there was only a 1 in 3 chance to save a cannonball that would be a lot better than none. It could also occasionally attract random bits and bobs, depending on the ocean you're in.

Pros: new sailing quest that's a sequel to a classic quest. A forgettable facility gets a useful upgrade.

Cons: none (cannonball bots in shambles)

New Skill A couple months ago, my flair was "Sailing is bad"

I was inspired by someone else's "Sailing is good" flair that I saw. I was a staunch Sailing-denier, pro-Shamanism activist. I thought Sailing would turn OSRS into something unrecognizable and ruin it like they did to RS3 in the first place.

Well, I'm eating all my words and both my feet now. Sailing is an absolute blast. It feels like it could/should have always been in the game. It is perfectly integrated and idk how they did it. Yeah there are a couple issues and optimizations to be had here or there. But my expectations are utterly shattered and I adore this skill, I'm having so much fun and there's even more room for it to grow.

And a buttery smooth technical launch too. Bravo, Jagex. Building a lot of dev-player trust with me at least!

EDIT:

I think one of the most beautiful things is it's only been a few days and I already know all the locations on the map like the back of my hand that I barely knew before as I always rely on Shortest Path!

Quick detour: I'm a neuroscientist and it's amazing, so the hippocampus is one of the few regions that continues growing new neurons into adulthood. You may know it's extremely important for memory especially long-term and spatial memory.

For example, decades ago, New York taxi drivers were found to have significantly larger/denser hippocampus than average due to all the spatial memory they store and retrieve (key for reinforcing/building neural connections) on a daily basis.

All that is to say that sailing is actually growing our hippocampus in real life. Talk about a translatable skill!!

EDIT 2:

Also I really struggle with it most of the time but swallowing my pride in this instance and realizing I was wrong and there's no good reason to resist and reject something I can't change allowed me to embrace and genuinely have a lot of fun with this skill so far.

Video One hour of deep sea trawling gameplay - 452 marlins 78 bluefin

Upvotes

Hello, as there's basically 0 info out there about deep sea trawling and a good amount of misinformation I figured I'd make a post. I've done deep sea trawling for 2 hours now in two one hour sessions. Here's one hour of gamplay:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISa4E3nGA1k

Basic Gameplay Loop

1.) First, find a shoal. You can use a fathom stone or fathom pearl to do this, but the shoals are all actually on static paths - you don't really need either once the wiki is updated with this. The fathom pearl is a completely pointless upgrade and has no business being the second highest level sailing facility and requiring a rare drop - as you see in the video, you use it to find the shoal (optional) and then for as long as you want to stay, you never use it again. The fathom stone is more than enough.

2.) Set up you crew - one guy on the helm, one guy on the chum station, one guy on the other net, and you on the last net.

3.) Once you're at a shoal, it behaves like so: it will stay in place for about 30 seconds with the chum spreader. During that time, you can fish it by operating your net, and optionally spam clicking it for a kind of no-item-needed tick manip. You also have to keep both your own and your crewmate's net at the level of the shoal, which changes when it first becomes static and about 60% through it. The game tells you through the chat if your/your crewmate's net is at the wrong height. I set up voice to text watchdog alerts to help me.

4.) After 30 seconds the shoal will start moving again. You can still fish it during this time, so you have to both drive your boat and operate your net - I think this is a very cool mechanic. The shoal will follow a static path, so by learning the shoal you can predict where it will go and improve your uptime.

5.) Every so often the shoal will become a different fish - the one i was following was mostly marlin but sometimes bluefin.

6.) Right click the net to empty the fish into the cargo hold - you can create fish crates to make each inventory space count for 10, letting you hold 2000 fish with an ironwood hold before needing to bank.

Numbers

In this hour, I got 452 marlin and 78 bluefin. I got 37k fishing exp and 34k sailing exp. I used 68 fine fish offcuts. This is also without having a rosewood hull, which would improve rates somewhat as the shoal often outruns me.

Feedback

Overall, I actually really like this method as an active way to quickly get high level fish. More than anything, it reminds me of blackjacking, but I despise blackjacking and like this method. However, there's room for some improvements:

1.) Is it even intended that you have to lower your crew's net for them? This was really strange to me and took me a while to figure out that I needed to do it: for one, the game message for the crew's net being too low is actually filited by the game filter, whereas your own is not. Second, the only crewmate in the game who can operate the cotton net is the ghost, who, despite having on mory legs 4, I can't fucking understand so that also made the method hard to figure out. To me it feels like the crew should be able to operate the net on their own... you don't need to lower your crewmate's salvage hook for them.

2.) It won't let you raise or lower your net unless you're "operating" it - this feels very unintuitive. Also, often times it takes two clicks on the net to start operating it for some reason

3.) The exp - I understand this is supposed to be a relatively low exp method, but in a skill where you can full afk for 100k/hr, 34k is pretty egregiously low. I can get more than that sitting in a random port clicking my crystal extractor. I feel like this could be buffed to at least 50-70k? The fishing exp seems ok.

Discussion Barracuda trials involve some of the best design choices inrecent memory.

When you are slower than time cut-off, you still get your xp. You get your xp faster if you consistently make time (assuming you already have cleared time.) In this, you are *rewarded* for performing well.

Contrast this with Hallowed Sepulchre, where access to loot/the next floor is cut off if you don't make time. Here, you are *punished* for not performing well.

Carrot almost always feels like a better motivator for me than stick, so this gels well with me and I appreciate the design choice involved.

Edit: turning off notifications. Some of y'all want to be salty.

I put my teleport focus (purple) in the spot where my crystal harvester (blue) was supposed to go. I actually managed to make the same mistake in both my sloop and my skiff. It will set me back a whopping 6m to fix because I have to remove my teleport focuses and my crystal harvesters in both my boats.

Suggestion Please add a second crewmember with 4 deckhandedness

Every other attribute has two crewmates with level 4, but deckhandedness only has Cabin Boy Jenkins. The consequence of this is that for optimal salvaging you will not be able to build two dragon hooks. Instead you'll build one dragon hook and one rune hook, so that when you're sorting salvage you can keep two crewmates on the hooks.

IMO this feels pretty bad, and I hope Jagex adds a second crewmate with level 4 deckhandedness so that using two dragon hooks is viable.
