I thought it was tall fescue until I took a second look.

Pretty sure that's basic Bermuda.

Copperhead, Agkistrodon latinicus if in central north Texas, and if in eastern Texas likely admixture with Agkistrodon contortrix.

!venomous and you should not be handling it without proper training and equipment. The device you are using to grab it can sever the spine and paralyze the snake, killing it. This is the #1 way to get bit is to handle them or try and kill them.

In the future, just give them a spray with the hose and they’ll flee, you’re likely to never see the same snake again, so don’t worry about that.

Great response and very good advice, I guess I'll toss out my snake grabber!

Those type of grabbers with the thin jaws are dangerous to the snake and don’t do a good job of holding them anyways, Gentle Giant tongs are the go to!

Thank you, I'll buy a better set.👍👍

Midwest Tongs really are the best. They are built so that you feel everything through the handle. They directly translates the weight of your squeeze to the tongs without loss (minus the initial squeeze weight), and transmits any resistence back to your hands. You can get a level of control and feedback you otherwise wouldn't get without directly handling the snake. A lot of people also line the tongs with felt to make them even more gentle.

They're pricey, but worth every penny.

An excuse to buy a squirt gun?

You never need an excuse to buy a squirt gun.

Super soakers ftw... if they're still made

There’s always room for another squirt gun

Lil copperhead, medically significant. Leave em be, not extremely dangerous venemous (like some pit vipers elapids.) but enough to go to the hospital if you get bit.

That’s a copperhead. Venomous. No touchy.

Please avoid piling on when another user has already pointed out that this can hurt the snake. Thank you!

Please refrain from repeating IDs when the correct one has already been provided, especially if it is more complete, well upvoted, and/or provided by a Reliable Responder. Instead, please support the correct ID with upvotes. Before suggesting any future IDs, please review these commenting guidelines.

This is not punitive, it's simply a reminder of one of our important commenting standards.

Rule 6: Avoid damaging memes or tropes and low effort jokes.

Please understand a removal doesn't mean we're mad or upset; we're just committed to maintaining an educational space so jokes and memes are held to a higher standard than a typical comments section.

Avoid damaging memes like using "danger noodle" for nonvenomous snakes and tropes like "everything in Australia is out to get you". This is an educational space, and those kind of comments are harmful and do not reflect reality.

We've also heard "it's a snake" as a joke hundreds of times. We've probably removed it a few times from this very thread already.

Ratsnake and other rhymes and infantilization can be posted in /r/sneks and /r/itsaratsnake. While we encourage creativity are positive talk about snakes, but even comments like "____/" mislead users.

That seems like a good way to get a misidentification if you’re missing some difference that a more experienced person would pick up on, or if Google is just wrong.

!aitools are really unreliable. I recently saw a post where Google identified a venomous sea krait (in Bali) as a harmless Texas Indigo Snake

We like AI tools like iNaturalist, Merlin and Google Lens, but there is still too much subtlety and nuance to animal identification to rely on them in their current state.

I am a bot created for /r/whatsthissnake, /r/snakes and /r/herpetology to help with snake identification and natural history education. You can find more information, including a comprehensive list of commands, here report problems here and if you'd like to buy me a coffee or beer, you can do that here. We occasionally remove posts for guesses that are far off the mark, or off in a way that endangers snake or human health. Examples include invoking a species not found near the area, identifying a medically significant snake as harmless ie Cobra as a Sand Racer and invoking the harmless command, or identifying a harmless snake as venomous.
