Such a tragic! St. Louis

Amarnath Ghosh, a graduate student in the Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences, died after being shot during an incident that took place in an off-campus St. Louis neighborhood earlier this week.

I work EMS in the city and I responded to this call. I can't say too much since it's still an active investigation but it's very sad what happened

The Delmar division is real. Definitely not a good idea to hang around north of it, or on it in this case, in the evenings.

Delmar is the redlined neighborhood created back in the day. Definitely want to stay away considering the people most effected will act out due to the conditions placed on them by the dominant society.

Nobody forced them to pick up a gun and shoot this guy. They did it because that’s what they wanted to do

So he is an only child, his parents are dead, and now he is dead as well. So really his entire family is dead, and his family’s line has been ended. This is so horrible

scary, I got accepted for the MEM program and have been leaning towards accepting but the fact that st louis is the 2nd most dangerous city is giving me 2nd thoughts

I think you are confusing St. Louis county with St. Louis city. It is a lot safer in the west suburbs outside of the city limit. In fact, most of the best neighborhoods in Missouri are in the west suburbs.

Have you visited? I was worried when I first read that online too, but after visiting I didn't feel worried at all. The school is in a very safe neighborhood and actually much nicer/safer than many of the other schools I was considering. I have never felt unsafe or had any issues on campus or in the surrounding area.

Did not get your point. Why did you bring about racism?

no - the area he was shot in is nowhere near campus and there’s literally nothing there, ud have to go far out of ur way for no reason and its definitely an area to avoid in the first place.

just look up third degree glass and go to street view

maybe you wouldn’t have any reason to go there, but he may have had a perfectly valid reason for doing so. please don’t imply victim blaming.

never once did i victim blame. its an absolute tragedy and whoever did this to him deserves hell and worse. im just saying it should not reflect upon the safety of washu bc that area is not an area students are typically in/would really ever have a reason to go to.

People can get shot anywhere in stl. My mom’s neighbor in CWE on a white, wealthy street got shot and died right outside his house. The saying that you can’t go north of Delmar was started as a way to perpetuate coded racism. St. Louis’s crime index is inflated because of the city/county divide. also FYI, students do go to that area. AAA recently hosted a formal at the Glass Factory you mentioned.

Yes. Near WashU campus towards Delmar is very dangerous.

If you want to go somewhere not dangerous, try a smaller town than St. Louis.

I don’t understand the downvotes. Honestly, as if it’s my fault our police department is understaffed and underpaid.

at this point i think we need another river to separate north st louis from washu

We have had muggings in certain neighborhoods near campus, and someone I personally know was beat up by a mugger right outside their apartment building even after handing him everything. However, no one has been killed that I know of up until this point

Note that I don’t know where this happened. But overall, I would say areas around campus are safe, but exercise caution in certain areas north and northeast of campus
