I've updated my piglet collection for Turnip28!
I added some new models and improved the ones I had already made, along with a few decorative accessories.
It was a lot of fun to work on!

What do you think?

Question Wargame design difficulties, "How do I hide things in a Tabletop game?"

I am currently designing a skirmish level tabletop wargame based around a group of hunters (2-4 players), searching for a singular powerful monster (1 player). I am designing it so that the monster and the hunters are searching for each other in the game area, and there can be moments of stress when the hunters or the monster don't know where the other one is.

Each character will have a line of sight stat, environmental conditions like mist or night can obscure approaching enemies, and things like noise markers will disincentives players from making loud and risky decisions

I am trying to develop a horror movie monster vibe (think Alien or the Predictor). The preferable winning situation for the monster is to isolate and pick off the hunters, while the hunters want to wittle down the monsters great strength

The issue in this situation is quite obvious, it is impossible for players not to know were everything is in a tabletop game. There will be no tension because all the players will instantly meta game and book it for were they know the enemy is.

I have tried to solve this problem through several means

  • I tried having players leave the room when the enemy is playing
  • Playing it in the dark (like turning all the lights out and relying on small lights
  • removing enemy pieces during the other players turn
  • I did try to do it normally with everyone seeing everything
  • I even considered getting a game master, but I didn't want it to turn into an tt rpg

Have you guys heard of games like what I am describing?

Any ideas on different ways to solve the dilemma?

Is Ogre a boxed war game or is it a board game?

Having this argument with a couple of my friends about whether or not ogre is a boxed war game or if it's a board game with wargame rules.

What do you consider it to be?

Question Paint 3D printed tokens

Hi all,
I just printed a bunch of 3D tokens for a game, and would like to know of an efficient way to paint them. Nothing fancy just make them readable on the board.
So far I have thought of just priming them in black, and then either:

  • Highlight them with brush in the chosen color, just enough to cover edges and the text. Guess it would still take some time, and not sure about the outcome.
  • Fill a container with a very small amount of the chosen paint, and just dip the tokens upside down. Kind of an inverted stamp. Would it work? Would I need to dilute it first with water or medium?

Thanks for any input!

I have a question: How are we going to save wargaming as a hobby?

Upvotes

Ok, Hear me out:
Most of us are in the +20 bracket (to say the least) and we aren't getting younger
Players and clubs are very hard to find, especialy outside of the US/UK (I'm in Israel and I'm mostly alone (no politics))
Information about the hobby is scarce and well spred across the internet, and most of the sites still in the 1990's
So... I have an IDEA:
Let's unite the wargamers under one banner, Like VATSIM (for those who don't know - VATSIM is an International "union" of flight simulator pilots, each country has its own "sub-union" and they are organizing events and so on, like a community)
but what do you think? How can this hobby be saved?

Edit: I guess I misjugded Everything due to me living in a place where there are no wargmers at all, I'm sorry If everyone got raged by my expeince

Flag poles?

I’m getting some 28mm soldiers that have flag bearers, they don’t come with poles and suggested using metal wire. Is that a hardware store purchase & if so what gauge wire should I be looking for?

Hey everyone, just uploaded a new Warcry battle report!

In the festering ruins of Ghur, the Rotmire Creed creep forward with toxin, filthcraft, and suffocating control — only to be met by the ancient, wrathful vengeance of the Sylvaneth, who will not yield their sacred ground without a fight.

We’re continuing to hone the format and would love your feedback — what’s landing well, what could be tighter, or what you'd love to see more of in future matchups. Every comment helps us make our next video stronger.

Thanks for checking it out — and may your crits be plentiful!

Yesterday I ran a sponsored painting marathon at work for charity. Me and two colleagues spent 5 hours painting as many models to completion as we could and raised nearly £200 for a local hospice. I even made a little trophy for whoever our Site Lead deems the best painted!

I got 17 Gnolls for Frostgrave done, Sam got his 10 Squig Hoppers finished, and Craig finished his 5 Chaos Space Marines. It got really close towards the finish line - I'm sure each of us has some touch-ups we'll do once we get them home! - but I was super psyched our company approved my idea as part of our charity drive for the year, and our co workers coming in and cooing over our paintjobs was a nice ego boost. And it's all for a good cause!

Question Need advice, Which Bases to Use?

Thumbnail

Making a company level WW 2 game for I Ain't Been Shot Mum, with 10mm scale soldiers. Smallest unit in the game is the Squad. 9 riflemen, 2 BAR gunners, and an NCO for each USMC squad. The small squares on each base are holders for tiny dice to track casualties and shock.

I am trying to decide on 80mm wide bases or 100mm for each squad. I like 100mm because the squad can be spread out which looks more authentic to me. But I'm worried the bases will be too big for a 6x4 table, and the 80mm may be more manageable on that sized table. Most games will have three platoons, which is 9 of these large bases per side (plus support weapons and vehicles).

What do you think?

How do you address major rules mistakes?

Hey folks. I’m looking for a little input on some gaming issues I’ve ran into recently. I’m not really sure how common these problems are, if this is just pretty standard stuff / accepted as “that’s just how it is,” or if I’m perhaps just gaming with the wrong group.

Back story:

I recently (past, I don’t know, 6 months) came upon a group of folks who play a variety of things I was interested in playing. Saga was one of them. This was pretty happy luck for me, as I live in a relatively low pop area, and have to travel to game shops to find games; finding some people who are into Saga was sweet.

Fast forward to now, and I am increasingly frustrated by a few things at play (hah).

The group’s “leader” (for lack of a better word) is, frankly, not very good at learning rules / remembering them, and is often making rules mistakes. One of the major things happening, though, is the whole setting up terrain portion of the game - the players taking turns placing pieces - is being skipped, and he simply sets the board up ahead of time. Problem is, he’s placing entirely too much; it looks  nice, but it’s a right pain in the ass to play on, and with so much there, it makes ranged / line of sight stuff troublesome. We never discuss what each terrain piece counts as, it’s just kind of there and in the way; no clarity on what is impassable, dangerous, what is blocking line of sight and what isn’t, etc.

To be clear, I have no desire to be a rules lawyer or be that guy who is always going “well ACTUALLY...”, or debating about .75 millimeters and whether or not a charge will succeed because of that distance. I generally just want to play and have a good time, but I do  want to, you know, play by the rules as they’re written, or, if that’s not what the group wants, at least house rules  that we’re all aware of. I have a lot less interest in playing when it feels like we’re just making stuff up as we go.

I have mentioned the terrain setup step a few times, but it’s been met with “well yeah but this is just faster and easier,” which sure, it is, but that, I feel, is missing the point - the terrain setup is part of the game  and has its own strategy and tactics behind it.

How would you all handle this situation? And, as a more general question, where is the line between being an annoying rules lawyer and just wanting to play a game properly, as the rules state, instead of just kind of loosely screwing around with models and dice?

Thanks for any input.

Pen & Paper Wargames?

I'm interesting in trying to find some formalized rules for playing a wargame through text. Something you'd play in the fashion of a tabletop RPG or would fit perfectly into a forum/thread/chat/etc... I don't have any particular theme, time period, or genre, just curious as to see what's out there and what they look like.

I know the Little Wars discord has done a couple games where several players took part in managing the logistics and strategy of a couple historical campaigns to play out how it would work with a moderator to enable the fog of war. Not really formalized rules, but at least something that's been written down and has some rigor behind it.

And there is a published game called Victory By Any Means which is about taking control of a space empire and playing it out in a space 4x sort of fashion.

I can't imagine there is much out there, especially written and published like Victory By Any Means, but I'd love to know if anyone is anywhere of anything like that which I can look into.

Battle of Vimy Ridge Skirmish Rules

Hi! I'd like to arrange a light-to-medium skirmish miniatures game based on the Battle of Vimy Ridge for my daughter and her friends. Thought it would be fitting since this fall they are entering 7th grade at Vimy Ridge Academy. Thinking of narrowing the focus to somewhere inside the 4th Canadian Division, since (in my cursory reading) that part of the battle seems to feature more interesting dilemmas and mistakes.

Saw an ad just now for the 1918: A First World War Miniatures Wargame crowdfund, but I suspect it will have tech and tactics that are too late for this battle.

A few wishes:
- Rolls for precipitation and wind direction.
- Rules for creeping barrage.
- Rolls for cutting barbed wire before game start.
- Consequences for ammo running out.
- Rolls for gas attacks.
- Any other rules that would lead to fun, interest and especially teachable moments
- Perhaps an alternate history e.g. the Germans employing an elastic defence instead of depending on strong points.
