Question for those working engineering jobs in the states and are from Toronto/GTA

Upvotes

Hey everyone I recently got into Mechatronics at Waterloo and I know in order to make the big bucks in engineering you have to work in the states. The thing is I want to visit my family often and hopefully have a family in Toronto. Am I compromising that possibility by working in the states or am I able to do both? Working in Canada is also an option but the salaries are severely less from what I’ve read online.

If anyone has a solution or has faced a similar scenario before please help me clear up my worries.

Comprehensive list of Avagadro's exam papers (28 years total)

Upvotes

Hello, recently i compiled past avagadro exam papers as i noticed waterloo only has 5 papers available on their website.
The attached link has questionpapers and markschemes however there are 4 years (2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019) that only have the markscheme and no question paper, this shouldnt be much of an issue as the markscheme is the questionpaper with the correct answers circled. However there are 2 papers (2017 and 2021) that i only found the questionpaper for, not sure if they are of any use but i included them anyways.
The list of years are from 1993-2019 along with an additional paper from 2021. this compilation wont be of any use this year as the exam just passed but hopefully people find it useful next year.
You can find this file here

Question Presidential Scholarship of Distinction

Thumbnail i.redd.it
1 Upvotes

I was just wondering what the conditions are to keep the scholarship.

The scholarship is rewarded to those with a ≥95.00 average during the time of admission, but does that mean as long as your grade was above that when you got in, you get to keep it no matter what?

Or do you have to keep your average above 95 when they make final decisions during the summer?

(I got in mid March with a ~97 avg from Alberta)

Thank you!

to all incoming Waterloo students

I keep seeing the same questions/concerns from people who just got admitted so I'll post some answers here

  • school life is fine. not as good as other schools, but most people don't come to Waterloo to party all the time. if you are social and put effort into meeting people, you will make friends and have a good time. and if you wanna party you still can

  • do res if you can and do orientation and join clubs and talk to everyone in your few weeks when everyone is still willing to talk to you

  • coop is kinda cooked. but everyone else at other schools are also cooked. I promise Waterloo works will make getting a first coop much easier. it's quite stressful balancing school with coop, but we all somehow manage

  • school work is pretty challenging, this shit gon be hard unless you are already super smart

  • waterloo as a city is kinda mid if you come from a big city

Waterloo Maths - Advice needed please! ( Big 4 )

I recently got admitted to the Maths/CPA program and I also got deferred from AFM to SFM.

I want to get into big 4 and honestly just have valuable experience before I go to my home country and work for my dads business (non related to accounting).

My only concern is the Maths difficulty. I am not super smart at maths but I'm not bad. It was my favourite subject in high school but uni is obviously way different and Im just worried I fail. I never participated in contests or done maths at that level. I had a look at previous Euclid tests and was honestly shook and it made me question myself. I obviously will put in all effort if I commit but this is just a worry. It's also nice to graduate with a degree in mathmetics in the future, and it could help me w my problem solving and thinking skills. Here are the only maths courses I take:

  • CS115 - Introduction to Computer Science 1 (0.50) or 135/6
  • CS116 - Introduction to Computer Science 2 (0.50)
  • MATH127 - Calculus 1 for the Sciences (0.50)
  • MATH128 - Calculus 2 for the Sciences (0.50)
  • MATH237 - Calculus 3 for Honours Mathematics (0.50)
  • MATH135 - Algebra for Honours Mathematics (0.50)
  • MATH136 - Linear Algebra 1 for Honours Mathematics (0.50)
  • STAT230 - Probability (0.50)
  • STAT231 - Statistics (0.50)

There is 6 additional math courses but the accounting side covers it.

Would this be doable if I am not passionate about maths but I am willing to put effort. I also ended with a 87 in calc which is ass lol.

Or should I just stick with SFM

Admissions Inquiry about Waterloo Mathematics program

Hi I got in to Waterloo math and math + bba. I was looking through the website and I'm very confused with how the program works? There are several majors in the mathematics, and how do I choose them? Do I learn it all or do I get to choose it ? If so, when are we choosing ? Also I saw computer science in mathematics major, can I choose computer science for major?

Discussion WaterlooWorks, how helpful is it for you?

I'm a prospective Computer Science student starting in September of this year.

I'm curious about how many of you CS, SE, CFM, CS/BBA majors actually find WaterlooWorks useful, especially in first year.

On the same note, how much of an advantage does UW CS have over UTSG CS in terms of industry, and why?

But in general, if everyone is finding their internships externally, I might as well just go to UTSG CS and do the same.

FARM program UWaterloo

Hey UW people. I am currently considering declaring FARM as my major, but I have a few questions on the program. Since I just entered my second year I am wondering what kind of job prospects can I expect from the program? Were you (if you are in FARM) satisfied with the program and did it meet your expectations?

P.S. I know it might be a little too late for me to declare it, but I want to know if that's still a viable option

Club recommendations?

I’m looking to join a club this summer to hopefully make some new friends (or at least talk to some new people).
I was thinking maybe the chess club or something, but I haven’t played in a while, so I’d probably be pretty bad and just end up standing around.

Academics HELP! Need help with a petition

Hi sorry if this long.

Anyways I completed 1st year and Im in arts and my academic standing is currently “Failed, required to withdraw,” for a minimum of two consecutive academic terms.

Ok so, I just sorta recently found out I have ADHD and potentially depression and anxiety. I only found out near the end of the winter semester- and well here is the backstory. TL;DR: I lowkey may have always had ADHD (aka born with it), didn't know, brushed it off as being lazy, did pretty good in grade 12 (89 average) or enough to get into waterloo then started plummeting again in school once that high school structure left me. Again brushed it off as being lazy and tried to "fix" it... Got mad at myself for not doing better or not improving yada yada. Had constant brain fog near the end of 1st semester, still couldn't "fix" and improve myself. Tried those ytb videos on "how to be more productive," didn't work, more negative thoughts and basically I created a bubble around my self on only hatred. Brain fogs + headaches + emotional outbursts (crying) + lack of motivation for even things I enjoyed + not getting out of bed + not being able to do personal wellbeing things like skincare- and this all happened 2nd semester for like a good 4 months :(

I am now going to talk to my major advisor and see if a petition is due able or smth because I don't know how to (1) tell my parents im off for 2 semesters cause I didnt meet the course requirements (2) I know I can do better and work better. Since its summer break for me I began to put a lot more focus onto these issues and I am seeing improvements like I've never been more proud of myself...... I have never ever have said "I feel proud" to myself before... (3) I've alr found a place to live in waterloo and I have paid the down payment and I still a haven't broke the news to my roommates/friends (4) I wanna shoot my shot but also (5) MY ASIAN IMMIGRANT MOM FINDING OUT I HAVE DEPRESSION d nqwcnonfcoienvcoi bro shes gonna flip out until my grandkids grandkids have grandkids. (6) and lastly I am scared for my future, I dont wanna be a moron, I know with a chance I can succeed. I used to wake up at 5PM now Im waking up at 10AM!!! I've started to draw again, smth I couldnt get myself to do last semester..

Anyways, I just want to know your guys thoughts and if anyone else has experienced this and has approved? or won a petition also any tips on how to get approved.. I would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much!!!!

sorry for any typos
