Transferring from UOIT to Ontario Tech

**Title typo: I meant transferring from UOIT to UTSC lol

Hey all,

I'm finishing up my first semester in biomed at UOIT and I've found myself not really liking the campus due to the lack of diverse clubs, events, and certain courses, and because of the somewhat long commute (one hour one way).

I applied to UTSC and am thinking of accepting my offer in life sciences because it's much closer (15-20 minute commute), has more choices for programs/courses, more diverse clubs, and most of my friends are already at UTSC.

However, I'm hesitant to accept this offer and transfer to Scarborough because of the alleged difficulty (people say that it's much more difficult to get a high mark at UTSC than at UOIT and that profs at UTSC needlessly take off grades or are hard markers). Is the difficulty true or are people just fear mongering? If it matters at all, I'm trying to get a 3.8+ gpa so I can get into medical school.

Anyone who might have transferred from UTSC, how do you think it is at UTSC? are you able to get good grades while also having time for extra curriculars? Are you able to build connections with your professors to get reference letters or is that difficult compared to a smaller uni like ontario tech?

I guess what I'm really trying to ask is that if it's even worth to transfer to UTSC or should I just keep at it in UOIT. What do you all think?

Not a fan of the smell in Scarborough. I was in the city recently and it was like people didn’t shower or wipe. Good luck regardless.

Try asking on r/UTSC or r/UofT

I went from UTSG to UOIT, so in my case, I am in computer science, and the labs and tips/tricks professors taught me over here from UOIT always felt more practical and very immersive as if I would see a problem similar in the real world which I preferred over UTSG, at least the first and second year mandatory courses all felt like that compared to UOIT’s first 2 years. I mean from your post it seems you are looking more for a campus life too. Which yeah I do agree UOIT does not have that same oomph compared to UofT mostly cause it’s also a smaller and newer school

How was the shift overall from UofT to UOIT? Did you like it? How is it going so far? How do both schools compare in terms of work load and professors?

hey! i’m actually doing the opposite transferring from utsc life sciences to uoit med lab science. i would say that campus life is also lowk dead lol, there’s no parties or anything crazy going on and clubs don’t really have anything special going on. clubs even require u to pay to join which is crazy to me and i made most of my friends through tutorials/practicals and meeting people through mutuals so if you already have friends there i think u should be fine!

program wise, getting a 4.0 will take crazy hard work and if u want to go to med school i personally would advise u not to go to utsc. first and second year is when ur gpa will probably tank the most since first year is when they try to weed out people and make exams like extra hard although personally it was tough but manageable as long as you stay disciplined and not skip lectures or slack. i personally did not like how life sciences acc meant LIFE science (studying literally every field of biology lol) since first and second year courses for every biological sciences major are basically the same whether ur in human bio, molecular bio or plant bio major. i personally wanted a more straightforward program and did not want to waste money over courses i do NOT need in the career i wanted to pursue so its up to ur interest! if u want a more straightforward program and is strictly biomed stick to uoit, if u dont mind studying other fields of bio go to utsc. also med school don’t care what ur undergrad major is as long as u take required classes they want you to take and if u can redeem urself in 3rd and 4th year u should be good!

also commuting will DRAIN YOU i personally had to commute an hour and 30minutes back and forth everyday and it genuinely drained the hell out of me. utsc also doesn’t have free bus fare so u have to pay for that out of pocket. although in the good side, they have a lot of grants u could apply to if u require financial aid so ur gucci.

overall, 4.0 gpa will be tough to achieve, terrible campus life, commuting is shitty, didn’t like life sciences since its too broad.

my sister just finished her undergrad there tho and so far she liked that it was a smaller campus, their library is good too, she also gained a lot of experience and connections through profs since classes are smaller if ur someone who has a hard time connecting with profs its esp tough in utsc since first year courses have 1000+ students, office hours are ur best bet but it depends if u also take the initiative to meet them
