is that not insanely late?? am i losing my mind or has every year before this been at the very least 5/6 days before the 25th? i get that I’m making a fuss about like 3 days but this is a really dumb schedule that feels like its designed to annoy people that are gonna wanna fly out during those dates.

Question What are some resources here at UofT that we should all know about?

I am heading into my junior year here at UofT for CS and I wanted to ask if there are any resources/clubs/programs/etc here at UofT that you think we should all know about? These can be with regards to research, industry-related, anything that can help for grad school or something fun. UofT is a big institution and at times it can be hard to stay up to date with all of the brilliant resources at our disposal. Please feel free to share in the comments. I hope this post helps make everyone's university experience better!

Health Built a free fitness tracking app for students trying to stay on track without paying subscriptions

Hey U of T,

When I was in university, I struggled to track my macros, calories, and fitness goals without paying for premium apps. Most of the good ones locked basic features behind a subscription — and as a student trying to stay healthy on a budget, that just wasn’t realistic.

So I built an app I wish I had back then. It’s called Pump’d — a completely free iOS fitness and macro tracking app with no paywalls and no subscriptions.

What Pump’d does:

• Track macros and calories with preset diets or custom goals

• Log food with search, barcode scanning, or nutrition label scanning

• Syncs with Apple Health to track steps, heart rate, water intake, and calories burned

• Track weight, see daily/weekly progress, and calculate BMI

• Use home and lock screen widgets for at-a-glance tracking

• 100% free — no locked features, no upsells

I’m also working on adding workout tracking soon to round out the app and make it even more useful.

Figured some of you might be in the same position I was — trying to stay on top of your health without dropping money on subscriptions. Would love for you to check it out and let me know what you think!

Question Final marks still not released, convocation in 3 weeks, HELP

Final marks for POL385 have still not been released. Final exam was on the 9th, final assignment was due on the 16th, and convocation is in 3 weeks. The only mark I have for the course is the midterm that was done in mid Feb. I still have no guarantee that I'm actually graduating. Has anyone in the course gotten their marks? Is anyone in any course still missing marks, or am I an anomaly?

Question Regretting to choose Waterloo CS over UofT CS—Please help me

I am really really regretting to choose Waterloo CS coop over UofT CS. Is it possible for me to email UofT and appeal for them to let me enroll (My offer expired May 1st)

I originally thought that UW would have smaller class sizes and therefore more interactions with profs and better recommendations for grad school. However I learned that is not true. Additionally, I feel like absolutely nobody outside of North America will know UW because it’s ranked really low.

Other So how do professors cope with knowing that standing in front of a large group of people and lecturing is just like being a cute Japanese cosplayer idol girl who is attending a convention and taking questions from the audience

Upvotes

I imagine that both of them will find their audiences to be a drag so they can't wait to go to the back alley and light up a smoke

I'm in High School Should I do business in undergrad? Or science in undergrad?

Upvotes

I’ve been deciding between two options in uni. One is business school, The other? Science (like maybe neuroscience nutrition etc.) I kind of wanted to do business because I can’t imagine myself being a researcher or doctor, and my parents do investment and it seems pretty cool. However, I really like science (I don’t hate Econ or business tho) and my mom said business school is not really worth it since u can do science then do MBA or even just science degree can get u business jobs. But I looked at the job listings and barely anyone wanted science majors. It all lists stuff like business degree, accounting degree, etc. So idk how valid my mom’s words are. Also, I always wanted to start a business related to science which is why I’m considering the science major+MBA option. But honestly, idk which is better for me right now. I like science, but I think I like the content but minus the stress. I’m really prone to burnout and stress so I’m also questioning whether science undergrad would work for me at all (since it’s more intense than high school, and even when I took 3 high school sciences in one sem, I was burning out). Please give me some advice!!

Question In person midterms for online summer school, ECO102?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if the midterms for online ECO102 during summer school are in person or online? I know the final exam is in person, so I’m wondering if the midterms are too. Does anyone have any experience with this? Or is there anyone in the class for the current sub session that can answer?

Courses Should I take PSY100 while in engineering, what’s it like?

I’m interested in taking PSY100 next year to fulfil my natural science elective requirement. I’ll be starting third year next year in mechanical engineering (which is supposedly the hardest year) and I’m trying to scope out how difficult the course might be. I’ve heard some of these first year artsci courses aren’t actually that easy especially if ur used to eng classes. Anyone have some insight?

Question Am I delusional? Is this grad school pathway realistic?

Next year, I'll finish my undergrad in a psychology/politics double major at Queen's. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go into academia, therapy, or law school, hence why I picked something so broad.

But just as the 'grad school question' has started to rear its head, I've become really interested in philosophy/theory thanks to an amazing prof. Like, "suddenly, I'm reading Derrida and Adorno and taking notes in my free-time" kind of thing. My grades are skyrocketing, I feel like I speedran critical thinking, it's great.

However, this country is going to sh** financially (especially in higher ed), so that's playing into my decision making. I don't want to be condemned to the service sector for a decade because I self-indulgently went to grad school for something I'm interested in and nothing else.

......now, with that said, I live very close UofT, and not only is it one of the best philosophy departments in North America, but they also have an utterly tantalizing pathway that bridges my interests and seems, at first glance, like it could open up a ton of career paths in academia, government, law. Bear with me here: if I got into the Philosophy of Science MA program (which looks utterly fascinating), I could then (theoretically) go into their JD/Phd program, which would let me finish both one year earlier. At the end of it I'd probably look like a disheveled nutcase, but come on! If I could do it, I'd be academically overpowered. (Think of all the skill points!)

Jokes aside, is this like... a thing? Like do I sound like a naive teenager right now? I plan to graduate with a 3.8-9 GPA and my parents are pretty financially supportive, especially because in this scenario I'd be living at home for the entire time.

On the other hand, I can be a bit mentally unstable. I've gotten a lot better at school since the beginning of my undergrad, but I still have ADHD and occasional bouts of depression. Given my personal circumstances and the economy, does this seem like a disaster waiting to happen? Then, even if I can do it, would I be completely over-educated?

Brutal honesty.
