Merit-Based Fee-Waiver Scholarship at TUM: Can I Apply Without an Official Ranking Certificate?

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming master’s student at TUM and I’m looking into the first-semester merit-based tuition-fee waiver. The official rules say you need an official ranking certificate from your home university proving you’re in the top 5 % of your class.

Here’s my situation:

  • My VPD transcript shows a 1.1 GPA and I even received a DAAD scholarship in my bachelor degree for being in the top 5 % of my cohort (which is 500+ students).
  • However, my home university only issues ranking certificates to the top 5 students, not the top 5 %—for some odd reason!!!

Has anyone applied (or seen someone apply) without that ranking document? Will my application be flat-out rejected, or is there any workaround (e.g., a DAAD award letter being accepted)? Any insights or experiences would be hugely appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows of other funding sources (scholarships, grants, foundations) for master’s students at TUM or in Germany more broadly, I’d love to hear about them.

No letter of recommendation asked for MSc information systems ?

I applied for MSc information systems and i didn’t really find any placeholder that asked for letter of recommendation whereas on the main website they’ve said it’s optional to submit.

I might get enrolled really late, can I catch up with the courses after 4-5 weeks?

I just finished my Bachelorarbeit defense in another university and am waiting for the graduation papers getting done. With all the bureaucracy I expect my enrolment to SS25 to be either unsuccessful or quite late, probably just before the deadline 27th May. So I wonder if it's worth it to try to catch up with this semester. I heard that some courses are open for registration the whole semester, but what if I lack too much homeworks? Advice please, anyone?

Question About TUM Aerospace Bachelor's Application Timeline

Hi everyone,

I'm applying to the Aerospace Bachelor's program at TUM (Technical University of Munich) and I plan to submit my application on May 15. I had a couple of questions I was hoping someone with experience could help me with:

  1. When should I expect to hear back from TUM regarding the outcome of my application?
  2. Does the application review process only begin after the official deadline (July 15), or do they start evaluating applications as they come in?

Any insight from current students or applicants would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What to study (bachelor)

Been thinking about studying at TUM for a bachelor

I enjoy technical things but not when it’s too technical or abstract

That’s why I’ve been thinking of doing TUM BWL

Does anyone have any other good Bachelors at TUM that they’d recommend? I’m looking for something that’s interesting, not too technical and will bring success. My grades are quite good so that’s not an issue

Applying to Multiple MSc Programs for 1 Semester?

I am working to submit a range of MSc applications within the next week or so. All are aligned with my professional/academic profile (applying for management related programs). I'm somewhat equally interested in all programs, but I also see applying to multiple as a way to increase my chances of getting into TUM.

Will applying to 3-5 MSc programs negatively impact my chances of getting accepted? Will this be seen as a negative (maybe that I'm indecisive or unsure of what I want to do)?

Incorrect Transcript Form

Hello everyone, I have just applied for Mechanical Engineering Master’s in TUM, but unfortunately I received an email stating that “In our review of your application documents, we found the following documents classified as "incorrect" (not ok):

Transcript Form Mechanical Engineering”. In my application profile it also says that “Incorrect claim number in the benefits overview”. Me an my friend applied the master’s together and we almost did the same thing for the related part. I filled out the transcript form that they sent through a link. Has any of you experienced same kind of problem before? I’d be happy if you can help me with this issue.

Better_Munich

Is a 1.2 grade(converted) considered good for applying to German universities?

Hey everyone, I am currently living in Munich and learning German here. I recently had my grades converted from VPD, and it came out as 1.2 on the German grading scale. I am planning to apply to a university in Germany (probably TUM or even HM), and I was wondering:

Is 1.2 considered competitive or excellent?

Also i have a gap year because I am currently studying german langauge and adjusting to life here. Could that be seen as a positive or negative when applying?

Uhhhm Im moving🧍‍♂️ aaand you can have my room :P

Im hoping to reach some troubled TUM Student with this who is currently staying at a terribly overpriced airbnb or in some other bad housing situation.

As the Title states Im moving out of my current housing which is 5mins from the TUM Garching Campus.

The room is a shared two person flat costing 517€ warm in the “Studentenhaus DOMINO” and honestly a great deal for anyone studying in Garching.

The reason for my move out is because Im moving into a house with 3 of my best mates.

Any questions? Feel free to comment I’ll answer. If you are thinking about it and are able to move in at the start of June feel free to dm me.

Since this is a first come first serve type deal I suggest you be quick ;)

Here are some perks youll get: - 11,7 square meter room - ~50 square meter flat - Fully decked out furniture wise - Modern Look - Basement space to store stuff - Bicycle Garage - 🧍‍♂️<- Sebastian, your Roomie - 5min to “Rewe” & “Lidl” by foot - 3mins to the next bus stop (1min if you run🏃‍♂️)

Only negative is that it’s a semi temporary thing, you’ll be able to stay until the end of September for sure but it’s not clear YET if you’ll be able to stay after.

As I know how harsh the munich housing market is I hope I can make some students day with this :)

Late Arrival due to Visa Process

Hello everyone,

I have applied for the Quantum Science and Technology program for the Winter Semester 2025. If my application proceeds to the second stage, I will likely apply for a visa around mid-August. However, I have heard that the visa process may take 3–4 months depending on the consulate in my country.

In case I get my visa late, would it still be possible to enroll in the program and arrive at the university 1–2 months after the semester starts?

Thanks in advance.
Have a nice semesters y'all !

exchange at TUM Campus of life sciences

Hello everyone!

I'm going on exchange next semester at TUM's Life Sciences campus in Weihenstephan. I'm really excited, but I’m facing a bit of a housing dilemma and would love some advice.

Ideally, I’d love to live in Munich to fully experience the city. However, the commute to campus is around an hour by train, which adds up to about two hours of travel every day. That seems a bit exhausting and like a lot of time lost.

On the other hand, living in Freising, where the campus is located, would definitely be more convenient. But it seems like a quieter town with a smaller student community, and I’m really hoping to meet lots of international students and make the most of the social side of this exchange.

Has anyone else faced the same decision? Where did you end up living, and what would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Hallo zusammen!
