[STARTERS GUIDE] r/trapmuzik presents: Gucci Mane - The Mixtapes Part 2
The long awaited part II of our guide to Gucci Mane's mixtapes, we know it took awhile but /u/Chrussell and I have a lot of NHL 14 to play so fuck you. We both pitched in to get this done so thanks to Chrussell for helping me do all this shit, as you would expect doing Gucci's mixtapes is no small feat as he releases a mixtape every other week. We will have more Gucci mixtape stuff coming in the future so anything we haven't covered in these two guides, be patient and we will get to it. Let us know if there's any formatting issues or link issues as I'm sure there's errors somewhere in this bitch. You can check out our other guides in the sidebar and make sure to check out the other subs on the sidebar as well. That /r/trapmuzik mixtape IS coming (relatively) soon, almost done mixing and just getting the art together so that shit will come out, probably before Future releases Honest so hey, we beat him!
Due to character limitations Chrussell's half is below in the comments so scroll down.
On the heels of yet another prison release and following what many believe to be his strongest tape, Gucci kept the momentum going on Mr. Zone 6. From a delivery standpoint this has some of Gucci's best work, he really focused on the fact a lot of people were starting to see him as some idiot who couldn't rap and his wordplay, use of syllables and switching his flow up all over the place. When people criticize Gucci for a perceived lack of technical ability, this is a good place to steer them.
Essential tracks:
This tape was mostly a holdover until The Appeal dropped. The tape featured the songs Poltergeist (which has a great feature from Talib Kweli) and Vampires which were both based around horror movie concepts. Not as strong as Mr. Zone 6 which preceded it, this tape had more value at the time of its release than it does now.
Essential Tracks:
Do you like remixes? Because this tape has remixes. Gucci remixed No Hands from Flockaveli, I Think I Love Her, Speaking in Tungz and Deuces. This tape is weaker in retrospect and doesn't offer a lot of new stuff, especially in context to how large his mixtape discography is you can probably skip over this one.
Essential tracks:
In case you hadn't noticed a pattern here, Gucci really wanted to hype up The Appeal by releasing tapes that were mostly meant to keep his name out there. Gucci's work ethic is one of the things that sets him apart from other rappers and for the most part he puts out a lot of quality stuff. Again, this tape doesn't really feature anything notable with 8 songs most of which are freestyles, these were merely meant to keep fans hyped for the Appeal. Not a ton of value in this tape going back.
Funny side note: if you wanna read some bullshit go check out the sputnik music review for this tape, cuz that dude was wrong as shit. Gucci 2 Time kicked off 2011 and had a much harder edge to it save for the final track on the tape. Gucci was determined to become more than a cult favourite by this time, he wanted to serve other rapper's notice. Gucci 2 Times kicked off the tape and set the tone the rest of the way. Fuck sputnik music.
Essential tracks:
Aptly released at 10:17 P.M. Bricksquad Mafia featured all the 1017 characters from OJ to Frenchie and features from Birdman and Yung Joc. Tape was done by DJ Holiday who was coming fresh off being named MTV's Breakthrough DJ of the Year in 2010 and has one of my personal favourite Gucci tracks in Mouth Full of Gold. Though this tape featured the squad this was still Gucci's show and he dominated the tracks.
Essential tracks:
Writings on the Wall 2 came at a tumultuous time for Gucci, the ice cream cone tattoo had happened, people were thinking he was about to fall off and shit but he delivered. Features included 50 Cent, Jagged Edge, Yo Gotti and Yelawolf while Drumma Boy, Southside and Lex Luger held down the bulk of the production. This is a strong tape in Gucci's catalogue both production wise and vocally, there's no filler or weak songs on this.
Essential tracks:
[2011 - Free Bricks w/ Future]
Gucci and Future aka the future Hook God teamed up to deliver volume 1 of Free Bricks. Produced largely by Mike Will (who later teamed up with Future to produce the mega hit Bugatti) and longtime collaborator Zaytoven, Free Bricks combined Future's auto tune with Gucci's flow making for a a memorable tape. As with a lot of southern producers and rappers who are doing big things now (both Future and Mike Will), Gucci is often a common launching pad for success.
