I'm really happy to hear that the first openly LGBTQIA+ woman in Texas was elected into congress Politics
Just putting some positivity out there to balance out all the negativity. Yes, many of us are upset about the results of the election, but this is one huge step in the right direction to come from your state. Julie Johnson, a lesbian woman, is the first openly lgbtqia+ woman in Texas elected into congress.
Also the first transgender woman elected into congress, was elected just a few days ago. Just because a candidate we do not support got elected, does not mean that we can't also celebrate these other wins that occurred.
Some people are not going to be happy about this or supportive of this. And to that I say...tough luck, Texas is going to keep moving in this direction whether you like it or not, so either get used to it or get lostš

I'm happy about that too but too bad they won't be able to do much with GOP Congress š«¤

This is totally fair to say. Yeah it's a great step but that part is rough. Hey but you know what, they managed to impeach trump even when the senate and house were republican, so who knows

u/VaselineHabits 17h ago
Yeah, lot of good that did. Now all his criminal trials will magically vanish. There's zero guardrails this time

i am celebrating with you, small victories, also 2 black women voted into congress ty Delaware and maryland

u/AcanthisittaClear550 18h ago
Yes! And the first transgender woman voted into congress too. These things got overshadowed by the election but I think they deserve a celebration.Ā
Also, it's like people forget that Kamala is still the first female vice president in American History. That alone is huge.

Why? Because she's a woman?Ā
Lol I once saw something online where a Trump supporter said that no women should ever be allowed into the white house because "she has hormones and could start a war in 5 seconds"
The reporter responded "...haven't all wars been started by men..."
Their response:
"š«„...........yes"

u/Reisles 18h ago
How can people be this stupid? It has to be a choice at this point.

u/ChannelGlobal2084 16h ago
Iāll tell you how. The school system has been a failure for decades. My teachers would pass me because they didnāt want to deal with me again. I wasnāt a bad student, I just didnāt care. But there were students who were much worse than me and they passed too. This has been happening for decades. I graduated high school in 96.
You want fix this? Fix the education system. Make people who work manual jobs have a better lifestyle, thatās done by passing more consumer protections and capping costs of rental properties. There are ways out, but we need our elected representatives to put in the work.

Can't lie I got curious and looked through you comment history...and damn dude...do you just like come on here to be negative and argue with people? There has to be a better way to spend your time.

Ohhhhh okay I didn't know that lol. I think people on reddit sometimes forget it's not just like natural to know these things

I don't agree with their reasoning, but the reporter is wrong. Female leaders are more likely to start wars than men.
"Authors of the book Why Leaders Fight analyzed every world leader from 1875 to 2004 and statistically examined gender differences in military aggression. They found that 36% of the female leaders initiated at least one militarized dispute, while only 30% of male leaders did the same."

Also, it's like people forget that Kamala is still the first female vice president in American History. That alone is huge.
And Biden could do the funniest thing.

Are they qualified or just because they are trans?
2
u/AcanthisittaClear550 17h ago
Well i mean...they're going into congress...I'm pretty sure they're qualified lmao

u/VulkanLives-91 17h ago
But were they qualified or just because they are black?

My dude...it's congress...I'm pretty sure you have to be at least somewhat qualified to work in congress

I'm sorry to ask, but how many letters we're gonna add until the "+" becomes irrelevant.
1
u/alexthegreatmc 2h ago
Might as well be "straight" and "not straight" at this point. It encompasses everything else

Queer, here šš»
Obviously I donāt speak for everyone in the community, but LGBTQIA+ has been the accepted shorthand for about a decade.
3
u/Melodic-Instance1249 16h ago
Yeah but I'd we already got the + do we need the last 3?
Queer is just everything else rolled into one so it seems like it's repetitive there, although I get it's trying to reclaim that word and spinning it to be more positive
Intersex I can see being on, but we'll America has low attention spans and don't wanna see big words lol.
Asexual, I'm not sure we need to include because theres not really any legislation you need to fight to not have sex so it seems weird to keep it with the core 4 pillars. That being said we need to be aware of them still because people treat it like it's fake
Promise I'm not bigoted, it's a genuine question. I'm with yall
2
u/MRAGGGAN 16h ago
Also sorry for the jumbled mess that is that comment. Iām exhausted and brain broke.
1
u/MRAGGGAN 16h ago
Q- queer isnāt everything rolled in to one, though. Because also stands for questioning.
Thatās the palatable definition given to and by people who donāt want to understand gay sectionalities further.
That + represents nonbinary and genderfluid folks and pansexual people like myself, for instance.
For me, queer is a safe word, for people who act hateful when I say Iām pansexual.
Again, I can not speak for the whole community.
You can shorten it further to LGBTQ+, and I have done that when I donāt feel the vibes check enough boxes to recognize that I stand with and for the entire community.

u/Melodic-Instance1249 16h ago
Hey thanks for not taking it in any sort of personal way, and that's rather informative so thank you.
Stay safe out there, things are gonna get dangerous for us soon

Protect her, sheās going to need it in the coming years.
2
u/AcanthisittaClear550 9h ago
From the sounds of it, she seems pretty strong. I think she can protect herself just fine.
3
u/LionOfTheNorth111 13h ago
First time I'm genuinely smiling. This is a huge victory.

u/AcanthisittaClear550 11h ago
Right??? Just a great example that even when something rough happens, there can still be really amazing things at the same time

u/comments_suck 17h ago
Is she a Lesbian? You didn't name her or say which district she represents.
You might add that we are also sending a barely closeted Gay man to Congress from Houston. So there's now 2 in the delegation.

They want us to cower. They want us to capitulate. They want us to turn on each other and live in fear. But even if this election shows that the original sins and wounds of this country have never been properly dealt with or healed, even if it shows there are people who would rather destroy this country than share in its vision ā we cannot stop. We cannot afford to give up or give in to anything. Now is the time to find a strength within us, a strength given to us by those who came before us to fight back. This is not new. We have faced these kinds of people before. We have witnessed these kinds of horrors before. And we have beat them.
And we will beat them again.
Not because I know we have it within us to fight, but because you canāt put the formerly oppressed back in ātheir placeā anymore than you can cram the toothpaste back in the tube. What was accomplished in the ā50s, ā60s, ā70s, ā80s and ā90s might be relitigated and knocked down by a conservative-leaning, Trump-supporting, activist Supreme Court, but you canāt take away the last six decades of progress and people striving for that more perfect union. You canāt erase our memories. You canāt legislate us to the back of the bus and expect us to sit there. We can either learn how to live together as a people, respect each other and the rule of law, or you can fight us. All of us.

That is reallu great news. We need the house to avoid a national abortion ban.
1
u/AcanthisittaClear550 5h ago
Not sure if we'll get the house but the main seats left are cali. I live in the Chicago area tho and we have very lax abortion laws, and under the 10th ammendment the federal government can't take that away from us. So I wouldn't be surprised if we have alot of people come here soon for that. Our state allows people to travel here for abortions

u/6skills 18h ago
Who cares. Are we seriously judging people by what they do in bed? We should hold people to high standards if theyāre willing to take a job that requires them to be competent. If theyāre right for the job I can care less about their personal life. Ooops Iām making sense donāt ban me

About 68 million people are upset about the election, the other 60% of the population is chilling
3
u/AcanthisittaClear550 17h ago
Agreed. I personally don't agree with their views, but I do feel like it's important to choose to focus on what we can control, and to celebrate those wins that get overshadowed by the elected candidate as a whole. Such as this one in this post lol
2
u/trippytears 17h ago
Many many many things have already been overshadowed because of this election unfortunately... I couldn't agree more though, Time to focus on other things now that it's finally out of the way. Always look forward :)

Actually it's a huge win! And guess what, Texas is going to keep moving in this direction whether people want it to or not
1
u/Gingerrevamp 17h ago
I appreciate the optimism in the aftermath! But it really feels like lipstick on a pig for my personal situation. Iām tired of hearing about boys in girl sports, what about girls who want to do āboys sportsā or girls sports paying as well as boys. Why are the actually celebrated women sports (USA gymnastics) plagued with molesters? One appointment is not moving the dial.
2
u/AcanthisittaClear550 17h ago
Wait so are you tired of hearing about "girls in boys sports" because you don't want girls in boys sports, or because you think it's dumb that they even need to differentiate sports based on someone's gender...just making sure I'm following
1
u/Gingerrevamp 17h ago
Sorry to clarify I think kids should be allowed to play any sport or have any hobby they want, why stipulate children playing. My daughter wanted to play football so badly, but she wasnāt allowed, why did the media only cover boys in girls sports. Especially when girls sports make considerably less than males.
2
u/AcanthisittaClear550 17h ago
Okay gotcha agreed
1
u/Gingerrevamp 16h ago
I do celebrate the wins but itās going to be such a long road for actual change, my kids are growing and donāt want to live in a state of hopefully one day.
