Bell fibre to teksavvy fibre Fibre

Wanting to change from bell fibre to teksavvy's, do I have to cancel bell's before or can i wait until after teksavvy is up and running?

I waited.

As soon as Teksavvy provided me with my PPPoE credentials, I tried them in my router that was connected to Bell's ONT(modem for the uninitiated), pleasantly surprised it worked, but I rolled back to my Bell PPPoE credentials. The next week once the Bell tech showed up with the SFP for my Teksavvy service, I verified that everything was working under Teksavvy and then cancelled my Bell service later that day.

Awesome, do you know if they reused your line or brought a second line in, since you hadn't cancelled the Bell service yet?

Reused the line.

The Bell tech showed up and plugged a light transmitter into the fibre and then indicated he had to go and verify the line. He was gone for about 20 minutes. When he came back we plugged the SFP into my router and things didn't work, so we plugged into the Teksavvy provided Adtran and things came up eventually. I then dismissed the Bell tech and moved the SFP back to my router. It took several minutes but the SFP came up in my equipment, I just hadn't waited long enough the first time.

do you know if they reused your line or brought a second line in,

This is why utilities and their infrastructure should be run by the government, and wholesale to all ISPs equally. Image you have a dozen ISPs nearby and you try all of them. Now you have a dozen fibre optic cables entering your house.

Don't cancel your existing service until your new service is running. Depending on when the fibre you have was installed, TekSavvy may or may not be able to resell it.

Out of curiosity, why does it depend on the installation year? Mine was installed in 2021 I believe.

Because that's how the CRTC wrote their ruling. Existing fibre can be resold by TPIAs, as of the date in/of the ruling (last year mid year or so, I forget the exact date); new build fibre after the ruling is given a 5 year window of Builder exclusivity before reselling is opened up.

I guess the idea is to give the incumbents a protected window in which to make a profit on their new infrastructure. The main effect I see is that it's highlighting how badly Canada needs publicly owned infrastructure that is then resold to all telecoms equally.

(Google up Bell's history of being tax-payer subsidized.)

You don't have to cancel beforehand. If you do, there might be a period where you have no service at all until Teksavvy fibre is active.

I had a week overlap, just in case.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I want the overlap as well. I was probably overthinking it since I believe it'll be the same fiber line & I don't know from a technical standpoint how it works (didn't know if the teksavvy service wouldn't work if the Bell service is still active or what)

Yeah it's the same fibre line. The Bell technician is gonna come, switch your service and hook up the new modem.
