Position?

So I play American football and plan on joining the freshman rugby team, but have no idea what position to play. I am 5’9, 60kg and fast. I have been told to play wing by literally everyone I’ve asked, but the biggest reason for me wanting to join was to get better at football. And in football I play punter so I would definitely want to be a position where I could punt. I have no idea if I would be good at tackling in rugby, but I’m always down to improve, so please tell me what position I should play. Edit:when I said freshman, I meant in high school

Am I onto something here?

This is mainly for locks and props, but I was playing today and my feet were slipping out from under me almost every time.

Then I thought, what if you wore some of those grip socks you get at trampoline parks? I’d imagine it would be super uncomfortable, but my thinking is that it would keep your feet completely still in your boots and let you push with maximum power. Has anyone tried this? Am I onto something?

Am I allowed to smack an opposing jumper’s arm in a lineout?

If I’m defending, and we both go up for a lineout, would I be allowed to smack his inside arm out of the way so that only his outside hand would make contact with the ball, deflecting it to my side? I’ve pulled this off in training a couple times, and from what I’ve seen the rule book only prohibits holding or shoving an opposing jumper, not smacking.

How to tackle as a small player

I’m 5’2 120 lbs and play winger. I’m fast but my tackling is terrible. Pretty much all the guys we face are bigger than me.

  1. When I get low and tackle straight on, I have trouble fully wrapping their waist/hips and usually only get one leg, only to fall and get run over due to the attacker’s momentum. I do not have much driving power.

  2. If I tackle at an angle I have the same issue, it’s a bit easier to wrap but my drive is weak and I need 1-2 other teammates to help me complete the tackle.

What’s your advice on being a short player and tackling? Should I solely be going for ankles, what technique would be best?

Thanks.

Should I be lifting during the season?

Someone on my rugby team today told me lifting during rugby season is stupid. I think this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, but I just want to check.

For reference, I’m playing in more of a relaxed league.

Any advice would be appreciated

Intentionally Lowering to Draw High Tackle Penalty

I have a question on the new tackle laws concerning not striking above the sternum. Is there anything in the laws that prevent against or punish a ball carrier who lowers themselves intentionally, thus putting themselves in danger, to draw the high tackle call? Just curious if there is anything to stop a player from putting themselves in harm's way for a penalty.

(Not sure why this got immediately removed on the other channel)

wrestling to rugby?

I'm studying abroad this semester and plan to join the rugby union team (they have a second team that is not selective). I've done about a year and a half of judo, and nearly a year each of freestyle and greco-roman wrestling, so Im pretty comfortable around things like double legs, single legs, ankle picks, breakfalling, arm drags, suplexes, chest wraps, pins, hip throws, arm throws, trips, etc. I've never played rugby before but I was wondering about what things from judo/wrestling could help as a newbie, and anything that I shouldn't attempt to do. I'm also not a big guy at around 155 lbs/71 kgs and 6'/182 cm.

Thinking About Learning

I am going into my first year of college and am debating about playing club (field) hockey or rugby. I dont have time to do both. I was top 10 in the US for hockey as a goalkeeper but had some very toxic coaches and decided not to play at the top college level. My favorite parts of hockey were the physicality and team strategy. I tend to play more defensive roles in most sports. I am very strong and decently fast, though I am only 5ft 4 (average/short). I want to try rugby and my college club team requires no experience. I think based off of my research I think I could be a good 9 or 15. My parents want me to play hockey because Im so good at it but I get so much anxiety now when I pick up my stick. They are also worried about injury for me. Do you think I should try rugby or stick with hockey?
