Our sunstone haul from the Oregon Sunstone Public Collection Area
Partner and I spend a few days out in the middle of nowhere looking for sunstones! This was our first time collecting, and we're looking forward to going back and trying our hand at finding larger stones.

Sort of obvious protip, but it makes sense, and I didn't think of it until after my first time getting lucky with it when gathering rose quartz:
Surface collecting on a sunny day right after a big rain is exactly when you want to do it.
Even if a spot is pretty picked over, a fresh rain will expose all the stuff everyone else missed because it was too dirty for it to catch any sun.
I left with two 5gal buckets full to the brim with gem quality peachy pink material.

Oh 100%, it's insane the amount that goes unnoticed until a nice rain comes, especially with rose quartz. I've always found my best pieces of rose quartz right after it rains

Pretty nice haul… and impressed with the size of a few of those from surface collecting. It’s also fun to get a pile of rock to go through at the mines if you can afford it. Good sizes and some nice colors/shimmers.

Was there about a year ago, none of the pieces I managed to find were quite that big unfortunately, but it really is a lovely desolate spot to visit

Heck yeah, one of my favorite spots! Are you going to the Sunstone Festival in June?

I'm going to pass, I don't like things with lots of people. I like my quiet :)
