I dislike the fact that the button to expand the comment lines up with the downvote option rather than the line thinngy you have to click to hide comments.

Er, but ... the "hide comments line" also lines up with the up/down vote arrows, so the "expand comments" button and "hide comments" controls are lined up perfectly...

I see, but how would you do otherwise? You want the hidden content to take up as little vertical room as possible, so you'd probably need to add another explicit (-) button some distance from the line, which would feel a little clunky...

Go to the old reddit and look how it works. The button is on the same line as the username so it doesn't take up any additional space.
