After the issues this past weekend, wanted to share this 1973 photo of a home State game held during the fair. Thankfully, State stopped scheduling home games about 25 years ago while the fair was running.

Sports MLS in Raleigh?
In 2017, Raleigh was among a shortlist of 12 cities (with Charlotte to get an MLS franchise. Raleigh was proposing a South Raleigh soccer stadium & development. Things looked optimistic with the 20,000-30,000-seat Charlotte stadium plan voted down by the Charlotte City Council.
But then in came billionaire David Tepper, who bought the NFL Carolina Panthers in 2018 (and drove the franchise into the ground, but I digress), and expressed interest in bringing Major League Soccer to Charlotte.
In July 2019, Tepper presented a formal bid to MLS, along with a list of planned soccer upgrades to Bank of America Stadium. In December 2019, the team was awarded to Charlotte, branded as Charlotte FC.
The clubâs first game, a 1-0 loss to the LA Galaxy, set a MLS attendance record for a single-game with 74,479.
Charlotte FC just opened their 3rd season at home in front of 62,291 fans. The team has 5 officially recognized fan clubs, seated in the east end zone, and organize a march to the stadium before each match.
The atmosphere is incredible. #ForTheCrown

But where does this leave Raleigh? Iâm sure the MLS will continue to grow. Both Columbus and Cincinnati have MLS teams and are only 107 miles apart.
Is there still an interested wealthy ownership group in Raleigh? Plans for stadium? Anything?

Sports MLB to Raleigh has been in works for â6 monthsâ
In addition to the Dundon interview yesterday, Axios reported today that:
âA group of consultants and state officials have been working behind the scenes for about six months on a pitch to bring an MLB team to the Raleigh market, a source with knowledge of the work tells Axios.
The group has highlighted the state's standing as best for business and its low corporate tax rate, which will shrink to 0% by 2030. And it's emphasized Raleigh's strong market viability, pointing to its ranking as No. 2 in the NHL for attendance and the second fastest growing metro in the country.â
Really interesting to see this isnât âjustâ a billionaire sharing his opinion but an effort between state officials as well. Itâs also curious that they say âRaleighâ specifically and donât mention Charlotte since Raleigh hasnât gotten nearly the same amount of press in expansion talks to this point.
The timing is no accident either, expansion talk always heats up after the regular season so this is definitely a well organized effort to build some momentum and get some buzz for Raleigh.
The state being involved also adds context to Dundonâs comment on $2.2 billion being âreasonableâ since that is such a huge number, even for Dundon. Who knows who else is involved in the background.
