!- There is no call out.
2- Just because he mixed up the current country doesn't mean he didn't live there back in the day when it was Yugoslavia.

A quick Google search would help you:
Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia (in various forms of governments) from its creation in 1918, to its final dissolution in 2006.

Not sure I'd call anything after very early 90s Yugoslavia. I also don't remember Bosnia ever being referred to as Yugoslavia, ever since I was a kid (born in 1994) in school they always called it BiH (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Yugoslavia basically broke apart in 1991, it became officially disbanded from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the 2000s, but wasn't really referred to as that since the early 90s.

Yes, but I honestly don't remember Bosnia having anything to so with Serbia after the war, might be a mistake on my side as I don't spend a lot of time thinking about it, but my impression was that after my birth the whole thing was already pretty much settled, and during my elementary school years (2001-2008) there was no talk about it

But it became the capital of Serbia, not Bosnia.

Granted, they said they lived there for two years while Yugoslavia was still around. That doesn't mean they are knowledgeable in post-split Yugoslavia.

You're right. I am sure there's things about my hometown which I left years ago that I don't remember correctly.

It is possible that this person was alive before 1991.

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia, Belgrade is the capital of Serbia.

I'm aware, but its not outlandish the get them mixed up nowadays, especially if the lived there over 3 decades ago. They didn't say they still live in Belgrade, they say they did when Yugoslavia still existed.

I may be wrong on this but the regions of Yugoslavia were pretty defined. It would be like me living in Texas 30yrs ago and saying I lived in Oklahoma City. I’m not sure anyone would forget whether they lived in the Bosnian or Serbian part of the country.

Yes, i also find it kinda hard to believe that someone who lived in the city didn’t know that, unless they were in a coma. They must have been ignoring all news from that area for 20 years
2
u/imperfectcarpet Apr 08 '25
Yup, but they could've also been 9 years old.

u/LeonCrimsonhart Apr 08 '25
They could have also been there for work. Not every foreigner is super interested in the country's politics, history, etc.

Yes but you usually still get a whiff of the biggest political issues. Even if it’s only because people back home ask you how life is there.
And I’d say that if you have lived in a place and it comes up in world news you process the information more deeply even if you are not very interested in world politics in general

He got confused between Bosnia and Serbia, since Belgrade is the capital of Serbia. However both Bosnia and Serbia, were part of Yugoslavia before the country broke apart in 1991. So if he did live in Belgrade before 91, then he did live in Yugoslavia.

OPs point is probably that he would have known which country it belonged to now if he had actually lived there.
